Chapter 1
[Alexis PoV]
It wasn't ideal, I'll be the first to admit. Sitting across from my fiancé of 2 years as he droned on about how my "life choices" weren't the life choices a wife of a VP should be. He wasn't even a VP, yet! He was nothing but a glorified secretary. A glorified secretary that sat in a cubical surrounded by other glorified secretaries.
Well, sure, maybe my life choices weren't the best. But who said you couldn't make it big with a master's in art? I made good money selling my paintings around the world. That money helped me afford my condo, since the pompous d**k refused to let me move in with him. Together five years, engaged two. Nothing to show for it but his complaining in the middle of this fancy restaurant.
"Lex, I'm trying to get a corner office. Don't you get that? All the men in my family have gotten the corner office of companies they worked for, if they didn't downright start the companies themselves!"
Gee, I don't think I ever noticed how dull my ring was. Everytime I move my hand, it doesn't even shine in this florescent lighting.
"... And Stacey was a debutant. My family loves her." I'm sorry, who?
"Ok, stop. Remind. Who the Hell is Stacey?" Brent stared at me like I'd grown two heads.
"Haven't you been listening at all? Stacey is my girlfriend. I've been seeing her for the last three years! My family loves her. She was a debutant. The kind of woman that a corner office VP should marry."
"So what you're saying is you started dating her a year before you proposed?" You gotta be sh**ing me! He started cheating on me two years into our relationship and still had the audacity to propose! Maybe that's why my ring was so dull? The fact he did it in my living room made more sense now, too.
"Lex, that's not the point. Pay attention. I brought you here because I think it's time we broke up." And there it is. The words stolen from my mouth because he just had to say it first to make himself look more manly.
"Brent, you can't break up with me. I'm breaking up with you! You're cheating scum!"
"You're making a scene. This is one of the main reasons I'm breaking up with you. You're an embarrassment." Red. That's all I could see. Before I could process it, my martini glass was in my hand. Why I had a martini in the first place, I'll never know. I despised them.
"I'll show you embarrassment!" Splash. I tossed the entire contents of the glass into his face, shoved my seat back, stood with my purse, and stormed to the front of the building. How could he do this? Didn't five years mean anything to him? I looked down at the ring still on my finger, wondering if I was actually relieved it was over or just in shock. After wenching the thing off my finger I stepped up to the hostess podium.
"Please make sure Mr. Richards gets this." I quickly said before leaving the ring on the podium and rushing out.
Outside there was a soft breeze as clouds began to cover the moon. A quick peak at my phone showed me it was after 10pm. No way I was paying drunk prices on Lyft. Looks like I'd have to go with calling Natalie. It only took two rings before her groggy voice answered.
"Hello?"
"Natty? It's Lexxy. You're probably half asleep and didn't look at your Caller ID. I need a ride."
"S**t! Are you broke down? Send me your location! I'll bring my emergency breakdown kit!" Natalie was one of the most loyal people I knew, but the craziness had an emergency kit for literally everything.
"Natty, I'm fine. Well, I'm not fine. But I'm not broke down. I'm outside Gallaghers. Can you just come...."
"You're where!?" She all but screamed into the phone. I couldn't stop the grimace.
"Gall... A... Ghers..."
"I'm not giving Asshole Express a ride if his precious little Prius broke down." She snapped into the phone. I grimaced again.
"It's not that either. Natty, we broke up. He's been cheating on me since before we got engaged."
"That son on a b***h! You stay right there! I'll be there in twenty minutes!" This wasn't good. Maybe I should've paid drunk prices on Lyft.
"Natty, I'm fine! Seriously! I just need a..." Click. The line went dead. This was not good.
[Natalie Pov]
After hanging up on Lexxy I tossed my phone on my pillow and quickly changed into more suitable clothing. That son of a b***h had another thing coming to him for what he did to my best friend. Who even gets engaged after starting a different relationship? I wonder if the tramp knew.
As I was walking toward the door, my little red dress caught my eye. I knew Lexxy would be dressed up if she was at Gallagher's, but maybe a change would be in order. Quickly I snatched it from the hanger and ran out the door; thank the Gods we were the same size. I was going to make her relax whether she wanted to or not. There would be no pints of ice cream and Nicholas Sparks tonight.
The drive was pretty fast despite the city traffic. Granted, I had a lead foot and was a woman on a mission. I found a garage close by and slid into a spot with ease before making my short walk over to Lexxy.
She was leaning against the wall with her head in her hands. Poor girl looked so broken. This was the moment. I puffed up my chest as best as I could and walked over to her.
"Ok. Tell me where the Asshole Express is." She slowly lifted her head to look at me. There were no tears, just anger in her eyes.
"How about I lead you to him?" She said and smirked. Following my lead she stood straight and grabbed my hand. Together we marched back into the restaurant to give that bastard a piece of our minds.
Unfortunately that confidence was short lived when I heard several gasps. In the middle of the floor was Brent, on one knee, with an open ring box in his hand. In front of him stood a twig of a woman with blonde hair that reached her mid-back, black stilettos, and a short black dress that left damn near nothing to the imagination. Her hands were covering her mouth and she had the world's largest, but ugly, crocodile tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Yes! Oh my God, yes!" The blonde screeched with a pitch that made even nails on a chalk board sound like a symphony.
I turned my head to check on Lexxy but she wasn't there. When I went to look for her, she was already back outside and pacing. Suddenly she stopped and just punched the brick wall, letting out a yelp. I rushed over to her.
"Are you out of your mind! Don't go hurting yourself because some bimbo!"
"Did-didn't you see the... Ring? That was his grandmother's! The same thing he told me he couldn't propose to me with because his older brother had used it for his wife. He lied to me, Natty. He broke up with me, then turned around and proposed to her within the hour! Where was she even hiding?" She continued rambling as I wrapped an arm around her shoulder, patting her softly on the back in hopes to console her.
"Let's go to 230s. Get you a drink. Dance it out. Forget that Asshole Express and his bimbo." I could feel her shaking her head against my arm. "I brought you a dress."
It was that moment she actually looked at me. I was in my blue dress with a plunging v-neck and hugged my thighs.
"What dress did you bring?"
"Your favorite red one!" She tilted her head at me for a second and started to shake it. A stern look from me caused her to nod and we slowly snuck back into the restaurant and past the hostess. We could just use the restroom to change.
