Chapter 5

The passage of time seemed to linger due to Cameron's departure for college and Lily's ongoing absence. They were unable to have open channels of communication because scheduling issues prevented them from doing so. It felt as though we were always too busy to accomplish much more than shoot out a quick text. Most of the time, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Because Lily now spends her time working on the weekends and sometimes at night, the amount of time she spends with Cameron has decreased to nil. Despite the fact that she and Kyle had been together on several occasions, she never seemed comfortable when it came to physically touching him. She had no feelings for him, and she had no interest in engaging in s****l behaviour. Not until she came back to her house and examined the messages she had received from Cameron, anyhow.

After she came to the realisation that it wasn't going to work, she found the strength to tell Kyle the news. After threatening her and pleading with her, he ultimately walked away from her and left her alone. She vowed to devote herself once more to her career and her studies. She and her mother had reached an understanding that in order for her to attend college, she would need to maintain a certain grade point average and maintain employment.

Lily had the intention of enrolling in the same university as Cameron did, but she hadn't told Cameron this yet. A part of her desired for it to come as a total and utter surprise. Both of her mothers, in addition to her own, expressed satisfaction with her accomplishments.

Even though Cameron didn't give in to a blonde called Courtney until a few weeks into his first year of college, she was already his girlfriend at the time. As soon as it took place, he was filled with regret regarding it. To no avail, and as a result, there is now the uncomfortable circumstance of her assuming that they are dating because of it, despite his promises that the opposite was the case.

He found a place to live in a complex on campus that was created expressly for the purpose of housing college students and rented an apartment there. Although it contained two bedrooms, he never let anyone other than Courtney stay there because of the ease with which disagreements between the two of them escalated. He started drinking to an unhealthy extent and partying during the whole weekend, which ultimately led to him failing the majority of his classes.

Jaxon and Aaron, both of whom like to party and play, end up being his new best friends. Even though he was technically living at home close to campus, Jaxon frequently crashed on Aaron's couch. Aaron was renting a studio apartment on the floor above Jaxon, and Jaxon was crashing on Aaron's couch.

Cameron never mentioned Lily to anyone, concealing the fact that she even existed. He mentioned in passing to his friends that he had a great buddy back in his hometown, but he never went into any detail about that guy or how they knew each other. As long as he was in Courtney's presence, he couldn't help but reflect on his relationship with Lily. Courtney was irritated by the fact that he had called her name out, but she put it down to his intoxication and went on anyhow. Never once did anything like that occur.

While sitting on the couch and enjoying a beer, Cameron watched baseball on the television. There was a visit from Courtney, Jaxon, and Aaron. They all got together for a couple of beers, or in Courtney's case, a lime-a-rita, and shared them amongst themselves. She was perched nearby and kept reaching out to touch him or give him hints that he should go back to his room. She was concerned that he had been out too long.

"Come with me, and I'll show you my chamber," the host said with warmth. Aaron inserted his opinion after becoming increasingly agitated by her presumptions. One of the phrases that comes to mind is "Tie you to my blasted bed and leave you there."

I am the kind of woman who would be too much for you to handle. After he gave her an answer, she retaliated.

That's exactly what Lily did, too. It had been close to a year since the last time that he had seen her. She had put in more hours of work than normal throughout the summer in order to better prepare herself for university. He tried to get her to tell him where she was going, but she sidestepped his inquiries by claiming that she was unsure of her destination.

"You can count on me." Aaron gave her the empty water bottle he had been carrying.

No, I wasn't planning on inquiring about anything with you. She gave him a cold look with her gaze.

You might as well go ahead and get yourself three beers since you're going to be up in a short while. In addition to that, Cameron offered her the bottle that was empty.

"Fine." She heaved a sigh as she grabbed the cans and then walked away.

When Cameron felt a vibration, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, thinking that Lily would be there. However, his mother was there instead.

He sat up a little straighter when he noticed a slight increase in the rate of his heartbeat. Given his past experiences with other people in romantic relationships, his mother did not know anyone at his school, and she would not recommend someone based just on their appearance.

His mother was a total and utter failure when it came to concealing information. He was almost as awful as they came, and it all started with the grin that lit up his face.

"What's up with that grin on your face?" Courtney cracked open a beer for him and offered it to him to drink.

"My very best friend is going to be my roommate in the dorm for the upcoming school year."
