2 - The Heartbroken Girl

1080 Words
When Clare got to her hotel room, she dumped her bags in the corner and stared at the romantically decorated room. The king sized bed had a large heart made of red rose petals and candles stood on the nightstands too, a reminder of the night she had planned for her boyfriend’s birthday. Well, ex-boyfriend. Clare sighed as she sat on the bed, looking at the cake box in her hands. After leaving her apartment she had gone to collect the birthday cake from the bakery, it being too late for her to cancel the order. Goddess, I was so foolish for thinking this was a good idea. Clare thought to herself. They’ve probably been going behind my back for months. Clare wanted to cry but stopped herself. She had spent enough tears on those cheaters and needed to think about her future. It was the only thing she had left. Placing the cake box on a nightstand, Clare pulled out her phone and opened it. It seemed Natalie and Matthew had blown up her phone with messages and missed calls. Biting her lip, she quickly blocked them, knowing that if she answered their calls, they would make her feel guilty. The long drive to the hotel had given her enough time to think about her relationships and notice the two were always siding with one another. She was so stupid for not seeing it. Once she deleted the unread messages, she saw that her professor had responded to her. Clare smiled, glad at least one thing was working in her favor. Now all that was left was to get the paperwork done and tie up any loose ends here. Not that there were many loose ends. She just needed to let her Alpha know she was leaving for C City, quit her job at the store and find an apartment. Then she could focus on her studies and become a great pack healer. Yeah, that suited her much better than romance. I think I’m done with love. Clare thought. From now on, I’m going to do what I want and not get involved with another person. It’s only going to lead to heartbreak. Sighing, Clare fell back onto the soft bed, closing her eyes. She was tired, emotionally exhausted from everything that had happened. She wanted nothing more than to curl up into a ball and sleep. Soon darkness took over as she fell into a deep slumber. *** Clare awoke to a dark room, turning her head to find herself staring at a beautiful view of the city. A few stars were out along with a full moon overlooking the hundreds of buildings lit up. Groaning, Clare sat up and looked at her phone, seeing it was 8pm. She had slept for a few hours, her face feeling a little sore from all the crying earlier. Despite sleeping well for a few hours, she still felt miserable and a little hungry. Her stomach growled at the thought of food. Rising from the bed, Clare headed for the bathroom, wanting to freshen up. She thought about calling room service but sitting alone in the hotel room eating didn’t feel right. She knew she would just keep thinking about what had happened and what could have been. In the end, Clare decided on going to the bar downstairs to stop the nagging thoughts. The bar was crowded with numerous rich looking folk hanging around. A DJ was playing some popular music with some young people dancing nearby. There were multiple booths with people sitting around and bartenders working around the long counter, giving people their drinks. Clare found a corner booth, hidden away from everyone and ordered some chips and a beer from a nearby waitress. She knew it wasn’t proper food but with everything being so expensive it was all she could afford. Soon her food came and Clare watched the bar as it filled up and became more of a nightclub. *** Xavier entered the Lotus Hotel Bar, wondering why he had ever agreed to meet with the Creekwood Pack Alpha. The middle-aged werewolf was a creep, sending a bunch of she-wolves to his hotel room to try and seduce him. He wanted nothing more than to kill the other Alpha but he had no real excuse to. He was already in enough trouble with the Lycan King and didn’t need to give his father another reason to be disappointed. The family company would definitely land up in his cousin's hands if he messed up this deal. As he headed to the bar to grab a drink, Xavier’s nose filled with the heavy scent of lavender. He found it strange considering there were so many beings around. Xavier shook his head, ordering a whiskey before taking a seat by the bar counter. His mind was probably playing tricks on him. At least that was what he thought when he suddenly laid eyes on a sad looking woman sitting in the corner booth. MATE! His wolf howled in his mind, Xavier realizing that the scent was coming from her and that he had found his mate?! Xavier tried to process it, having to snap at his wolf who was going crazy. His wolf wanted to know everything about their mate, know why she was sad and kill the person responsible. His wolf wanted to claim her, make her theirs in front of everyone but he couldn’t. There were humans around and if they discovered a werewolf in their presence… The Lycan King was really going to have his head. Taking a deep breath, Xavier stared at the small woman, trying to figure out what he was going to do. She seemed like she was a werewolf too but for some reason Xavier couldn’t sense her wolf. Maybe a hybrid. But what kind? Her skin was like porcelain but didn’t glimmer like a vampire’s would. She had dark-brown hair that reached her waist and forest green eyes. Her hands were small and delicate, not clawed like a witch or siren’s. Perhaps she was a human and werewolf hybrid? Whatever the case, Xavier decided he needed to speak to her. But as he moved to where she was sitting, someone grabbed him. He tried to push away from the person and move past the crowds. By the time he got to her booth, she was already gone, leaving nothing but a faint scent and Xavier yearning for his sad, mysterious mate.
