I didn't know how long I simply laid there, waiting for something to happen, for something to leap out of the bushes and try to put an end to my life. I was taking deep breaths, doing my best to make sure that I didn't make a singular sound while doing so, but it was just one of those things that I needed to make sure of. I couldn't do something foolish, like allow myself to be convinced of the fact that I was going to be alright, because I knew the reality of the world around me enough to know that the moment that I stood up, I would be attacked.
