David Briggs QC, a London barrister specialising in society divorce cases, was dressed in mourning. His father’s funeral had taken place three days before and now, together with his wife Kate, he had to decide whether to move from their expensive riverside flat in the East End of London to this red-bricked Georgian house in the leafy village of Monken Hadley. Kate looked at David poring over some age-yellowed document found in his father’s desk. If anything, she found him more attractive with the passing years.
