Chapter five: the stolen bracelet.
***
I stood for fifteen minutes under the tree, and he wasn't showing up. I huffed out many times and almost cried that he stood me up.
What did I think when I said yes to him?
I dialed his phone number, but he didn't respond. So, I decided to break up with him that everyone hated.
I was dumping him over text.
It would be best if you had come to the park.
I waited for him to reply because I didn't want to seem like the bad guy. After all, maybe he had a reason why he couldn't show up.
I don't want to.
I whimper, reading the text message over and over again.
Do you think it's okay to treat me like this? What did I do? I was sleeping, and I didn't do anything wrong.
I was biting my lip so hard while I was typing. I couldn't handle Theo's coldness.
I am going through the worst right now.
I sighed and remembered that I loved him. When you love someone, you have to learn to accept them and understand that their behavior changes when hard.
I'm coming over.
*
Immediately, I forgave him when he hugged me tightly. That was all he needed to do. A few kisses and a hug fixed everything.
"I'm sorry," he finally apologized. "I feel stupid for saying what I said."
I nodded. "It's okay. You were upset."
Nan was going to kill me.
I loved him, and he was my everything. I knew even if the tears dropped and my heart broke a million times, I loved him, and it was hard to let him go.
It was five in the afternoon when my mom called, and she told me to come home. I sighed because even though I was sixteen, My parents still told me to go home at five in the afternoon.
My parents were excellent, but they weren't as cool as Grace's parents. She had her car and could go out whenever she wanted. Although she always chose to stay home and eat chips.
"I have to go," I frowned, caressing Theo's cheek.
"I will pick you up tomorrow, okay?" He kissed my forehead. "I love you."
*
I didn't say I love you back. Even though I loved Theo, but something in my heart was telling me to hold it back.
Once I set my foot out of his house, I knew he wasn't pleased about it and would probably cause another fight.
I didn't know why, but the three words couldn't come out. It was hard.
I felt dizzy out of nowhere as I walked back home, and I stopped under a tree.
I wasn't sick or tired, but the dizziness was normal for me because I had low iron.
I ran a hand through my hair, and I waited until the dizziness disappeared. "Finally."
I made my way back home, still thinking about Theo and my situation with him. I knew he didn't mean it, but it still hurt me.
I breathed out and placed my hands in my pocket. Sometimes, I wished for all of this to disappear.
Sometimes, I wished that our society didn't tell us that we had to get boyfriends when we were sixteen. I hoped that our community didn't tell us that we needed to be intelligent and beautiful to fit in because if I didn't try my hardest to be pretty and bright, I wouldn't have Audrey and Grave as my best friends. For sure, I wouldn't have Theo as my boyfriend.
As I reached home, I realized that I had forgotten my key in my room, so I knocked on the door multiple times.
Aiden opened the door, and I scrunched my nose up in confusion. "What are you doing? Why did you open the door? Where is Nan?"
"She is in the kitchen," he replied. "I took something from you, Rae."
I glanced at him. "What is it?"
"I lost it," he mumbled. "Your bracelet, the one you never wear."
My heart dropped. The only bracelet I never had around my wrist was the one that Elias gave me.
Everyone in this household knew not to touch that bracelet, and I didn't know why Aiden had taken it.
I wanted to kill him. I had too many questions for that i***t, but the thought of him being a child disappeared in my head.
"What do you mean?!" I grabbed him from his collar. "Who told you to go to my room?! Who permitted you to look through my stuff?! Did I say that you can take it?!"
"Rae," he cried. "I-I didn't mean to lose it, I swear."
"I don't care if you didn't!" I shouted. "Who told you that you're allowed to take my bracelet?!"
"I wanted to show my friend," he sobbed. "She thought it was pretty, and I let her hold it."
"I don't remember giving you permission to even be in my room!" I pushed him.
"What happened?" Nan walked into the living room, and I was still standing in the doorway.
"Your i***t grandson happened!" I glared at him, and then I headed to my bedroom. "You better find it, or I promise you that I will break your PlayStation in front of you."
I locked myself in the room and screamed in frustration.
He told me to wear the bracelet when I grew up, and here I was, I had in my room, but I never wore it.
I played with my hair, the bracelet meant a lot to me, and if that i***t didn't find it, I would show him how to look for it better.
My phone vibrated, and I opened it to check the message.
You didn't say I love you back.
I wasn't in the mood to answer his stupid message. I was distracted by the lost bracelet and didn't think to reply.
I knew Theo, and he would make a big deal out of this, but I wasn't in the mood to respond.
I didn't know how I could explain myself to him. What could I say to him about me not saying I love you back?
I threw my phone onto the bed and placed my head on my pillow. This time my phone rang, and when I grabbed it to check who, relief washed over me when I read Grace's name.
I immediately answered the phone. "Hey."
"What's wrong?" She asked. "Theo called me to tell me that you were upset."
I chuckled. "I am okay, but Theo always makes it a big deal."
"Yeah, I believe you," she said. "Do you want to meet up?"
When she asked me that question, I realized that my mother wasn't home, so I didn't know why she called me and told me to come home.
"Can you come over?" I suggested. "Can you call Audrey too?"
"Of course," she replied. "We will be there in fifteen."
After we finished talking, I got out of my room and glared at Aiden, sitting on the couch with Nan.
"You had to yell at him?" Nan looked at me.
"Yes, because Aiden went into my room when he knows that he's not allowed, and the dumb kid went through my stuff when he knows not to," I explained. "He lost the bracelet, Nan, the bracelet that I never wore because it meant a lot to me, and I didn't want to lose it."
"But guess what, Nan? The boy who had no business in my room lost it," I added, pointing at Aiden.
"He is still your little brother," Nan reminded me.
"But he knows better, doesn't he? He is ten, not five anymore! Tell me that I am jealous, but won't you be mad that your brother went into your room and took something meaningful from you and lost it?! Wouldn't you?" I snapped. "I am so done trying to please everyone! I am always nice to Aiden, yet he took something that isn't his and lost it!"
"Raelynn, go to your room!" Nan shouted.
"I thought you were my grandma, and you should've understood!" I huffed out and made my way to the kitchen. "Wait until dad comes home, Aiden!"
"Oh, you wait until mom comes home, Raelynn!" Aiden shouts.
"You have a tongue now?" I went back to the living room. "Where was it when you had to explain yourself!"
"Listen, Hannah's my best friend, and lately, she became more interested in girl stuff, and I had none," he explained. "I wanted her to love me still, so I took her to your bedroom and showed her the bracelet because I knew it was so pretty. That's what mama said."
I rolled my eyes. "Aiden, you're ten, okay? Stop talking as if you're five!"
"I wanted to make her happy," Aiden frowned.
"First of all, you go now to her house and ask her about the bracelet," I demanded. "Second of all, you should be grateful that you grew up with your best friend. Eddie and I had to leave our best friends. Now go."
Aiden nodded, heading out of the house. Nan sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Was this necessary?"
"Yes," I nodded. "I am not done with Aiden because he deserves more."
"Mom, didn't I tell you that I didn't want the kids out of the house after five?" We both looked at my parents, who walked in.
"I told him to go to Hannah's," I said.
I explained to them what had happened, and my parents looked disappointed.
Aiden rushed into the house, holding up the bracelet. I ran to him and grabbed it from him. "Hannah stole it."
"Now you know next time you do not touch my stuff," I scowled at Aiden.
"Aiden, you are not allowed to use your PlayStation for a week," dad told Aiden.
"It was-"
My dad cut my mom off. "When Rae and Eddie were his age, we used to punish them when they made mistakes. Aiden is not going to get away from punishments."
Mom sighed, looking at Aiden. "Go to your room."
Aiden nodded and made his way to his room.
Mom and dad looked at me. "You are not allowed to leave the house for two days."
"What?" I gasped. "I didn't do anything wrong."
"You treated your brother," dad explained. "Do not let me extend it to a week."
"Sorry," I put my hands up in surrender. "Oh, I kind of invited Grace and Audrey."
"Only for today," mom said. "Anyway, mom, thank you for taking care of Aiden."
"It's okay," Nan nodded, and she looked at me. "Rae, I want to see you in your room."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Why?"
"You know why, come on!" She held my hand and took me to my bedroom.
"Yes, Nan?" I said as she closed the door.
"I want to know what happened between you and your boyfriend," she sat on my bed. "Did you break up with him?"
I looked down, ashamed of myself. "No."
"Why didn't you break up with him?" Nan asked.
"Because I love him," I shrugged. "It's hard to let go of someone you love."
"You're right," she sighed. "If a boy doesn't treat you right, then you ought to know that he's not the one for you."
I nodded. "Theo is still a child, and we will have to grow up one day or another."
"I know you know," Nan stood up, and she looked at me. "You deserve someone who will treat you like a queen, someone like Elias."
I smiled slightly. "We were only six, and I bet Elias changed."
"Changed to the better, don't you think?" Nan laughed.
I shook my head. "I'm not sure."
"If it's meant to be, you will get back together," she shuffled my hair. "If it's meant to be, then it will work out between you two, and it won't matter if it will take a year or ten."
