Sergeant Murray spoke to Ensign Malini at the top of the ramp, the two leaning close together and keeping their voices low.
Scout couldn’t muster up the interest to try to follow what they were saying. Shadow, as always, sensed her mood and hopped up onto the seat to curl up in her lap, pawing at her hand until she turned it over and let him nestle his head in her open palm. Gert sniffed at him briefly, but when he didn’t respond she flopped down to cover Scout’s feet.
Somehow, everything was going to work out, she told herself. Whether she ended up in galactic central, stuck here on the space station for the rest of her life, or exiled back to the surface, somehow she would find a way to be okay. So long as she had her dogs with her, she could handle anything.
