Chapter 8Gil turned the pathway up to Tilly’s house by rote routine. Her forehead was already beaded with sweat though it was barely nine in the morning. She’d gone to the bank around the corner, on the side of the street where there was no sun cover, however, and she was now feeling the wrath of the heat that would surely cling to her all day. As she knocked on the red screen door, she heard the whir of Tilly’s air conditioner. Good, Gil thought. One less thing to worry about on the other side. When there was no response, Gil knocked again. She opened the red screen door and knocked on the surface door.
