Veronica's POV.
I knew what was needed. Diane asked me to get something that belonged to Isabella. And to get this job done, I would have to go near her. A little too close to my liking. And from the hatred she radiates for me, she won't just let me come closer. I had to find another way to finish my work; my best bet was Caleb. So I went straight to college, hoping to see him there and maybe convince him to get the job done for me.
When I reached college, the parking space looked empty. Not like without cars, but the ones belonging to Caleb and his pack members were missing. I walked a little further to check if my pack members were there; as expected, they weren't either. I have had doubts about this since yesterday, and this confirmed it. They know what happened between Mason and me. Well, not exactly; they don't know yet that I was with him, but they do know that he slept with someone. I want to rub it in her face, but this isn't the time for me to boast about it. Time is crucial, and I can't risk messing things up. The less they know, the better. So, it's better if they don't see that it was me with whom he slept; this way, I'd be in the clear.
After a very long time, it felt like happiness coursed through my veins, and I was content with it. As Caleb wasn't there, I had to call him to meet me. Dialing his number, I waited for him to answer the call. It rang for quite some time before disconnecting. This behavior wasn't something new. He never responded to my calls or acknowledged my presence in front of Isabella or his friends, even though one of them had caught us f*****g the daylights out of me. It wasn't a surprise that he didn't like me much unless and until there was some good-old f*****g involved. It didn't bother me; he was just a good f**k to me. The feelings were mutual.
But today, I wasn't calling him for a quickie. I had some important tasks I wanted to assign him, and he behaved like his usual ignorant self. Frustrated by his ignorance, I redialed his number. After a good four rings, he answered.
"What?" he said, annoyance dripping from his voice.
"Well, you sound delightful," I said sarcastically.
"What is it you want?" he asked, getting straight to the point.
"What got your panties in a twist?" I asked, now sounding pissed.
"Why the f**k do you care? Just say what you want and get lost."
WOW!
I was sure he was pissed when he got straight to the point. Whenever on call, he spoke about what he wanted to do with me sexually. Unfortunately, today wasn't the day.
"FINE!" I said, continuing, "I found a way to get Isabella to mate with you after rejecting Mason."
Listening to my words, he blessed me with silence.
Pure, blissful silence.
I took that as a chance and said, "I know a witch who can make her fall for you. She'll be madly in love with you in a few days, and then you can mark her to make her yours forever." While saying that, some part of me felt bitter, maybe even jealous. It could be because she had two men on their knees for her, yet here I was, my mate didn't want me. I didn't want him either, but that wasn't the point. Caleb still didn't speak, and that got me a little worried. I thought this would be enough to get him to do what I wanted. But now I have doubts, major ones. I took a deep breath and asked, "What? Changed your mind already? Want me instead?" I knew my words worked like magic when he growled, "Want you? Huh! Never. You are nothing but a good lay, so don't ever compare yourself with my Bella. She is like life while you are like a bug infestation that will destroy everything that comes in its way, just like that asshole, Mason."
That hurt. Sure did. But I had bigger things to worry about than these petty emotions. So I ignored his comment and said, "Of course. Your little princess is just perfect, and that's why she should be the one who is mated to you, not me. And that dream is just a few steps away. So, I'm going to ask one more time, are you with me?"
It took him a few seconds before he asked, "Why are you doing this? What is it that you get from this arrangement?" I knew this was coming. After all, he had to know what was in store for me from this. I smiled, forgetting for a minute that he couldn't see me, and said, "You get your b***h for yourself. That means she'll leave Mason alone, and it will be easier for me to grab his attention and make him mine."
"You wish", he murmured, not as quietly as he intended to because I heard it, which pissed me off. I snarled, "What the f**k does that mean?" "Nothing," he replied, but I knew what he was trying to say. As he was pretty open about his thoughts, I decided to give him a piece of my mind. "I was the only one he wanted until your b***h came in sabotaging my relationship with Mason. She was the one who stole him from me because he was always MINE."
I don't know why he sounded so pissed when he growled, "ENOUGH!" Maybe because I insulted that b***h or perhaps because I called her a thief. Whatever it was, the good thing was that it worked. The next time he opened his mouth to speak, he asked, "What do you want me to do?" I was the happiest person to exist at that moment. A smile latched onto my face as I informed him of the task he had to carry out.
"You must get me something that belongs to her, like her hair, nails, or maybe some blood."
"What is it that you need it for?" he asked.
"These things hold her DNA, which can help us decode her scent."
"Why the f**k do you need to decode her scent? And how the f**k is it going to make her fall for me? Are you f*****g sure about this?"
Oh god!
What if he knows? What if he sensed my lie through that stupid mate bond?
"What is it that you aren't telling me?"
OH f**k! He knows. I messed up.
SHIT! s**t! s**t!
I was panicking while having a minor panic attack when he asked again, "Veronica? Are you there?"
I quickly stuttered, "yyee…eess…sss.sss." Realizing I didn't sound as confident as I sounded earlier, I cleared my throat and said,
"Sorry. Bad reception. So yeah. What is it that you were asking?"
He accepted my excuse or maybe ignored it and asked again, "I asked you whether you are sure about this. It's going to work, right?"
I had to think of something quickly, so I took a deep breath and responded with the first thing that came to my mind, "Yes, it is. Also, let me finish. I said I want something that belongs to her, but I also need something that belongs to her. The witch said that she would mix your things, and your scents would get attached too. Once the potion is ready, all you have to do is feed it to her; she will be yours forever. Is this explanation enough for you, or do you need more?"
Exhaling, I relaxed a bit. He did not argue with my statement, and his silence gave me the necessary answer. He bought my cooked-up lie. He took an audibly loud breath before agreeing, "OKAY. I'll get it by tomorrow. I hope your little witch can wait until then."
When his words registered in my brain, my eyes widened, and Diane's statement kept revolving around my head, "It will take me at least 72 hours."
"NO!" I shouted. Realizing I was being stupid again, I spoke, "I mean, we can't wait till tomorrow. The witch specifically told me that she needed 72 hours to cook it up, which means the sooner we give it to her, the better."
The statement did not ignite any argument from his side, and the silence only meant one thing; he found it acceptable. Or so I thought until he asked," Why are you in such a hurry?" It was his time to be called a fool because I had a valid reason for that.
"Seriously? You don't know why we need to hurry?" He didn't say anything. I took that as an opportunity to speak and said, "The full moon night is just a few days away. If they end up together on a full moon night, their wolves will take over, and no matter what happens or how much they hate each other, they will mark each other, and then it's over for us."
He hummed, silently agreeing and accepting my request with, "Okay. I'll get it by evening." Just like that, the call was disconnected.
Now, if only he would get it done on time, we would enter the new week hand in hand with our beloved partners.
With our DESIRED MATES!
