Zachary came in late. He’d taken Amelia for dinner, and they had taken a stroll on the beach when they found a cabana and did a little necking, but he had been having a hard time to get into it this time. He’d spent the whole time comparing her to his romp in the sack the previous night. Thinking of Brianna had been the only thing fueling his amours behaviour. A lot of kissing and some heavy petting had been enough to keep Amelia strung along. He’d taken her home and kissed her good-night. Before she left the car, she’d asked him when she could see him again, and he promised to call her. It was an answer that hadn’t left her with a smile. He’d rushed home in the hopes of finding Brianna awake, but it was late. It was nearly one when he got in, and the house was quiet and dark. He shut the door and turned on the alarm then snapped the top lock in place. He could hear the TV in the living room was on. He headed into the living room and found Eliza curled up on the floor with a pillow and a half-eaten bowl of popcorn next to her. She was asleep. He came around the couch and saw Brianna had fallen asleep on the couch. He wasn’t sure what they had been watching, but there was an infomercial on the screen right now. Zachary turned off the TV and scooped Eliza up into his arms and took her up to the bed where he tucked her in, and she rolled on to her side without waking. He then quietly left the room and shut the door. He went into the guest room and grabbed a light blanket off the chair by the window and headed back down to the living room where he found Brianna right where he’d left her. He gently draped the blanket over her and tucked her in snug. He turned to leave, but before he left the room, he heard Brianna yawn. “When did you get back?” He stopped and came back to the couch as she rubbed her eyes and looked up at him. “Just a few minutes ago.” “I can’t believe I fell asleep.” She said sitting up. “Where’s Eliza?” “I took her up to bed.” “How was your night?” “It was fine.” He didn’t want to get into it with her. It felt wrong. “What time is it?” “One.” “So, are you home early or late?” She teased. He smiled and came to sit on the couch next to her. “Early.” “Doesn’t sound like it went well. No nookie tonight?” He shook his head. “No. I don’t do it every night. It just didn’t feel right tonight.” “Well, we should go to bed.” She said and stood up. Feeling bold he reached up and took her hand and pulled her until she was sitting in his lap. “Why rush? I want to spend some time with you.” He said lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles. His hand moved to her face, and he brushed her hair behind her ear. “You’ve been on my mind all night.” He whispered as he pulled her face toward him so he could kiss her. “Have I?” “I just want to taste your lips again.” He said, and he stole a long lingering kiss. It was the best kiss he’d had all night. He ate at her mouth drawing soft sighs from Brianna. She pulled back slightly. “I don’t know how I feel about this.” She whispered as he kissed her neck. “You were out with another woman tonight.” “It was work. Try not to think about it.” He said sliding his hand up the skirt she was wearing. His fingers pushed the sheer fabric of her panties to the side and slipped deep into her. Her head fell back as his hand manipulated her silken folds making her feverish and damp. “All that matters is I’m here with you, and I want you. Don’t you want me?” She nodded yes, and he shifted her off his lap and placed Brianna on the couch. He slipped off the couch and knelt between her legs. His hands pushed her skirt up, and he pulled her panties off. Pushing her legs open he leaned over and ran his tongue along her womanhood. She relaxed back against the couch as his mouth lapped and sucked at the bud of her s*x. He pushed two long fingers deep inside her while his tongue toyed with her body. Soon Brianna was lifting her hips to his mouth while she was starting to pant with need. When she came the whimper that escaped her lips was so sexy it made him quiver. Zachary stood up and began to take his belt off. Before he could get his belt, undone Brianna was already pulling the zipper open and pushing his pants and shorts down. Her hand closed around the base of his p***s and her mouth wrapped around the tip and slowly drew him all the way in. He threaded his finger through her hair and guided her as she sucked and ran her tongue along his manhood. She slid him in and out of her hot mouth while her hand cupped his scrotum. He could feel himself losing his control, and he didn’t want to come before he could make her knees shake. He pulled her head back and bent over to kiss her lips while he searched his pockets for the condom he hadn’t used earlier. He made short work of the package and pulled it on then Zachary lifted Brianna and her legs wrapped around his waist. He sat down on the couch with Brianna in his lap. She sunk on him and began to rock and grind against him. His hands ran over her back and bottom loving the feel of her body. Her head fell back, and her hair swung back and forth as she used him to satisfy her own need for gratification. She was soon moaning and trembling, and he knew she’d reached her peak, so he closed his eyes and let his release wash over him. Sated and content Brianna lay her head on his shoulder and melted against his body. He stroked her hair and kissed her forehead. He’d never been this satisfied. Being in Brianna’s arms was fast becoming an addiction. “Let’s go to bed.” He said lifting Brianna out of his lap. He removed the condom and tied it off then pulled his pants back on and lowered her skirt. Taking her by the hand, he led her upstairs. Zachary stopped in his room to get some more protection then he took her into the guest room and proceeded to remove her clothes. They climbed into bed and continued to burn the night away together until Brianna fell asleep in his arms. Zachary was dozing when he heard something in the hallway. He climbed out of bed and pulled on his jeans then went to investigate. He moved down the hall and noticed the linen closet door was open. He sighed and opened the door more. Eliza was sleepwalking again. When she did, he often found her in closets. He peeked inside and found Eliza sitting on the floor under the bottom shelf hugging her legs. “Come here baby girl.” He whispered reaching inside to take her hand and coax her from the closet. He pulled her out and lifted her into his arms. “Let’s get you back to bed.” Her head laid against his shoulder as he carried her back to her room. Oh, how he hoped she’d grow out of this. He carried her back to bed and tucked Eliza in. Once he was sure she was sound asleep, he headed back to his room. He thought about going back to Brianna, but he didn’t want Eliza asking questions come morning. He changed for bed and dropped onto the mattress wiped out form his day. He was almost asleep when the house alarm went off, and Zachary shot up out of bed and ran to the bedroom door. The alarm was loud and had woken everyone. He stepped out into the hall and could hear the sound of a ruckus downstairs. He could hear Milo barking like crazy from the backyard. Brianna appeared in the doorway of her room in her panties and a t-shirt. Chino and Esmerelda were not far behind, and when Eliza opened her door, he pointed at her and ordered Esmerelda to take Eliza into her room and for Chino to go back in their room and call the police. Zachary went into his room and opened the top drawer of his dresser and retrieved the handgun he kept inside. He didn’t keep it loaded, but he did keep bullets handy. He loaded the gun quickly and headed for the stairs. He moved quickly and quietly. He could hear voices. Three men were rummaging through his office, and the living room is grabbing anything they felt was of value and easily fenced. Someone had smashed in the window by the door and reached in to unlock the door letting themselves in. Zachary came around the corner and was jumped by one of the men. They wrestled for the gun, but Zachary wasn’t going to let go. The gun went off, and the intruder yelped and placed his hand over his shoulder where he’d been shot. Another man rushed Zachary knocking him to the ground as they ran out of the house. Zachary looked up just in time to recognize one of the men. It was Addie’s no-good boyfriend. Brianna came running down the stairs when she heard the gunshot and was on her knees next to Zachary with concern. “Are you hurt? I heard gunfire.” “I’m fine.” He said as she helped him up. “Damn junkies.” He cussed turning on the lights. He could hear the sirens in the distance getting closer. But they were too late the culprits were long gone. Chino came down the stairs and groaned when he saw the mess. “Is everyone alright?” He asked. The police pulled up out front, and the uniformed officers were at the door. Esmerelda stood at the top of the stairs holding Eliza and watching the scene unfold. Zachary ordered her to take Eliza back to bed he didn’t want her downstairs with the police asking questions. They walked through the house taking inventory of what was broken and what was missing. They hadn’t gotten away with much, but they broke almost everything. When they asked if he got a good look at the intruders, Zachary told them about Addie’s boyfriend and his sister’s visit the other night. He was pretty sure they had decided to rob him so they could sell his things and buy drugs because he’d refused to give her money when she asked. Though he hadn’t seen Addie, he had a feeling she wasn’t far. They had gotten past the gate, and they could have only done that if they had the access code for the gate which he was sure Addie knew. He’d also told them about the man he’d shot and they promised to keep an eye out at the local hospitals for gunshot victims. It took an hour for them to write up a report and then the police left, and Zachary bolted the door not that it mattered with the window broken. He went out to the garage to find something to cover the window until he could get someone out to fix it. There was still a matter of broken glass everywhere. While Esmerelda got Eliza back to sleep, Zachary and Chino tried to clean up. He wanted the place as clean as was possible before Eliza got up in the morning. Brianna picked up a broom and Zachary looked up from where he was picking up large shards of glass and tossing them into a wastebasket. “You don’t have to do that. Why don’t you go back to bed? Chino and I can clean this mess up.” “No, I want to help. It’s a big mess.” She said sweeping up the smaller bits of glass. “What a night I can’t believe you were robbed.” “It’s not the first time. Although usually, they rifle through my desk while Addie distracts me. This is the first time they did this.” God, he was so mad. How could his sister go along with burglarizing his home knowing Eliza would be in the house? She put Eliza in mortal jeopardy without any concern about how this robbery would affect the poor child. He could kill his sister. She was so selfish. Every time he thought Addie couldn’t sink any lower she managed to surprise him. They took a few hours to set things right. The sun came up before they managed to finish. All Zachary wanted to do was go to bed, but as he started up the stairs, Eliza came down and started asking questions about the window. He couldn’t go to bed now, so he sat on the couch while Eliza watched the TV which was cracked. He’d have to get a new one. They probably would have taken it too, but it was too big to run with, so they had just knocked it over and broken it. While Esmerelda dealt with Eliza, Zachary lay his head back against the couch and fell asleep. *** Esmerelda came into the living room to find Zachary asleep on the couch, but he wasn’t the only one. Miss. Parker had fallen asleep next to him with her head on his shoulder. “They make a cute couple.” She said to her husband as she watched them sleep. “Si they do.” Chino agreed. “The little Chica is good with Eliza too.” “I like her. It’s a crying shame he won’t keep her. He really should quit messing with all those debutants and settle for a nice girl. One without a husband.” “I think that’s a long shot,” Chino said as he watched their boss sleep. “She’s just here for a story. She’ll be gone soon, and everything will be as it always is.” He said as the house phone began to ring. “Well business calls.” He said and went to answer the phone. Esmerelda clapped her hands to gain Eliza’s attention. “Come on little one let’s have a snack before you play me some violin.” At least the robbers hadn’t destroyed that. *** Brianna felt Zachary move which woke her from her unexpected nap. She sat up as Chino woke Zachary and offered him the cordless phone in his hand. “Señora Aker, Señor.” Zachary sat up and took the phone. “Hello?” Brianna watched him wondering who Mrs. Aker was. “Tonight?” He said still sleepy. “Um, yeah, I’m free tonight. I won’t be good company though I was robbed last night.” Brianna watched closely as he smiled. “Yeah, they trashed everything and scared the crap out of my niece.” He paused as if listening to the woman on the phone. “Oh yeah, that would be great... No, I can pick you up, what time would be good?” He went quiet again and then chuckled. “Counting the minutes.” He said and then hung up and handed the phone back to Chino. “Good news?” Chino asked. “Going shopping.” “I’ll wash the Jag,” Chino said and walked away. “Who is Mrs. Aker?” Brianna asked a little annoyed that he was going out again. “My latest lady friend.” “That wouldn’t be Aldermen Aker’s wife?” “The same.” “So now you got a politician’s wife blowing her husband’s ill-gotten bonuses furnished by the taxpayers on new stuff for you.” She said perhaps a little more judgmental than she’d meant too. She wasn’t sure what bothered her more, that the taxpayers were going to pay for a new TV or that he had another date? She was foolish she had no right to be jealous it wasn’t like Zachary was her man, and he’d never led her to believe he would be exclusive even if he were. She knew what he was, and she was trying very hard to be ok with it but the more she got to know him the harder it was to stay impartial. “It’s what I do.” He said standing up. “Now I need to shower. I’m picking her up in an hour.” “I won’t be here when you get back.” She said as he headed for the stairs. He stopped and turned back to face her. “You change your mind about the story?” “No.” She said getting up. “I figure I got enough material to write the article. You’re a busy man you don’t need me in the way. So, I’m going to go and let you get back to your life as you know it.” He looked like he didn’t know what to say. “I mean this was only supposed to be a night or two anyway. I wouldn’t want to overstay my welcome, and you have a lot on your plate with the robbery and everything. So, I’m just going to pack my bag and call a cab.” “Is this because you don’t like my work?” Her instinct was to say yes, but she knew it would only complicate things. She had no right to tell him how to live, and she couldn’t see him changing for her. “No, you do what you do, and I’ll just get out of your way.” She said and then walked past him to go upstairs. She stopped halfway up and turned to look at him. “And thank you for the interview. I’ll see you get a copy of the magazine when it comes out.” She rushed the rest of the way up to the guest room and started packing. She felt like a moron getting involved with him as much as she had. It was stupid, but he was so compelling it had been hard not to fall for him. All she knew was she had to get the hell out of here before she got emotionally invested in a man that was emotionally unavailable. She took her time and then carried her bag downstairs where there was a farewell group waiting for her. Chino smiled at her. “I took the liberty of calling you a taxi. It is waiting for you.” “Thank you, Chino. It was very nice to meet you all.” She said and then looked down at Eliza. “Especially you.” “Don’t worry about the fare Señor Cooper has given the driver his credit card. The fare has been taken care of.” She smiled and then tussled Eliza’s hair. “You take good care of your uncle.” She looked around taking note that Zachary wasn’t among them. “Tell Mr. Cooper good-bye for me.” She then picked up her bag and went out to the cab. The driver tossed her bag in the trunk and Brianna climbed in the backseat. She dropped her head against the window, and as they pulled away, she thought she’d seen the drapes in the upstairs window move. “Good-bye Zac.”
