Chapter Four
“Where am I?”
Echo POV
I open my eyes groggily, forced to blink multiple times in order to adjust to the brightness of the light.
Once my eyes do adjust, I find myself sitting in an incredibly lavish bedroom. I thought my bedroom was large, but this puts it to shame. Seriously, like holy s**t. It’s huge. I attempt to sit up, only to realize that my arms and legs are tied to the bed posts. f**k, what am I doing here?
I think of the events of the previous night. Fighting Azrael and four men, eventually getting kidnapped. s**t, this is not good. I don’t know what’s going on- but it’s not right. I take a deep breath and try to steady my thoughts. I need to get out of here, but I can’t if I’m tied down. I start struggling vehemently in my bonds. For the next hour I mercilessly wriggle and writhe and attempt every maneuver I can to free my hands. My futile attempts end with blood running down my wrists from the rope burning into me.
I suddenly hear footsteps outside the room, and the door opens. Azrael steps in, looking like his usual gorgeous self.
“Hello, sweetheart. How are you?”
“Would you care to explain what in the literal f**k is happening?”
He sighs. “I’m sorry I had to take you by force, but you must understand, I didn’t have much of a choice. You wouldn’t come with me willingly.”
“That explains nothing” I tell him in a venomous tone.
“Do you really want the whole truth?” He questions warily.
I nod.
He stands up, takes a deep breath, and suddenly wings come out of his back. I’m beyond shocked. Azrael’s a f*****g angel?
“I’m an angel of heavenly father.”
My mouth stays agape.
“You see, Echo, every angel in heaven has a mortal soulmate. Most have found them over the centuries, but I have not. Finally I sought out the three fates, and they sent me to your school. As soon as I laid eyes on you, I realized you were my mate.”
I’ve heard legends that line up with what he’s saying, but this can’t be right. I believe in what he’s saying, but I don’t believe that I’m his soulmate. That’s a load of bullshit. I’m just a weak, depressed human being. There is no way I would be his soulmate.
“Yeah, the fates have made a mistake. I’m not exactly soulmate material.”
“Oh, but you are, my love. You won’t realize until I brand you and make love to you, but after that you will.”
“I’m sorry, what? Brand? Make love? I’m absolutely not having s*x with you!”
“A brand is sort of like a tattoo. I place my hand on your body, choose what brand I will give you, and then you will feel a small prickling sensation followed by immense pleasure, and when I remove my hand you’ll bare my brand- or tattoo, as humans refer to it.”
“Yeah, no thanks. I am not going to let you brand or have s*x with me. I suggest you speak to fates to get reassigned, because I have no interest.”
His eyes turn black. “You don’t have a choice, darling. If I have to force you, I will. It wouldn’t be the first time an angel’s forced their human.”
“Since when are angels eyes black? Since when do angels force humans?”
“Oh, angels eyes aren’t normally black. In fact, I’m the only one with eyes that turn black. I’m the angel of death- Azrael.”
The angel of death got assigned me as a soulmate? Not bloody likely. This is bullshit, and I will not stand for it. I start writhing in my restraints.
“You can’t force me! Wouldn’t you get punished?”
“With any other human, yes. But not with my soulmate.”
“Let me go! Please! I’m not the girl for you! I’m depressed, alone, suicidal, and overall f****d up, you don’t want me!”
He gets far closer to me, and tilts my chin so I’m forced to stare straight into his eyes.
“I know you committed suicide last night, Echo. You want to know how? Because I brought you back. You are mine, and you will not leave me.”
His eyes then turn genuine. “I love you, Echo. Let me help you. Let us save each other.”
A single tear escapes my eyes. “There’s nothing to be saved, Azrael. I’m not broken, broken can be fixed. I’m wrecked, destroyed, hopeless.”
He shakes his head. “No. You’re not. In fact, you’re perfect. Everyone goes through s**t, Echo. You’re not that bad.”
Great, now he’s invalidating my emotions.
“Look, angel. I have no interest in being your soulmate. I don’t love you, and I never will. Branding and f*****g me won’t change that.”
“It won’t be f*****g, it will be making love.” He affirms.
“It will be rape, Azrael. Let me repeat myself- I am not having s*x with you! What are you, going to force me?”
He shrugs. “If I have to.”
That makes me writhe harder.
“LET ME THE f**k GO!”
He shrugs. “Pass.”
“Azrael! This is illegal!”
He moves so that his face is an inch above mine. “I am an angel of the lord. The law doesn’t apply to me. You want to go to the police? Try. See what happens. Nothing! Nothing will happen, Echo. So don’t even think about it, there’s no point. You’re mine now, Echo. Mine. Got it?”
I shake my head vehemently. “I will never be yours.”
He smiles and brushes his lips on my neck. “We’ll see about that. I enjoy challenges, just remember that I always win.”
He unties me, and holds my hands for a moment.
“Heavens, Echo. You seriously almost tore your hands off trying to get out. You should have just called out to me, I would have untied you sooner. Next time I’ll just have to use silk sashes.”
“f**k you, asshole! Get the f**k away from me!”
I punch him in the face, and he recoils slightly. “You’re going to pay for that, babygirl.”
“I AM NOT YOUR BABY! LET ME GO!”
