Chapter One: The Promise of Tomorrow
It's said that, one night, the angelic tears of Anu streaked the velvet sky. Green sparks flittered in lines so long one could trace them with their fingers beyond the mud-brick wall. Many people had been awake for the union of Ninhursag, and her love since childhood, Gitlam, before they observed this feat from the Eanna Temple. For the newlyweds, Anu's tears were a gift of new beginnings and of peace—brilliant flecks promising a better tomorrow. The wonders bestowed on Anu's people of Uruk should have been just that... Wonders. Tomorrow came and went, along with the sudden disappearances of Mesopotamian women. Wars escalated and spread across the world, depleting many countries of their natural resources over time. It wasn't until 1940 that scientists started developing alternatives for food and oxygen. When WWII hit, architects designed more secure bunkers to protect their citizens from attackers. Before long, it was 2022. A new war had been brewing for some time in Asia and Europe. It was a race, just like the one for the moon, and it was only a matter of time before America involved itself, too. Florida's central hub, Orlando, had been under fire for its lack of providing up-to-date technological advances for artillery, security, and recruitment. Men and AIs contracted under the Ancient Artifacts Institution of Orlando were feeling the heat, as well. Felicity Waters trekked the corridors of the twenty-fifth floor of the institution, paperwork in hand. She glanced at a panel of windows to her left. There were no cars or trees beyond the glass, just a graveyard with stones lining embedded luxury bunkers and concaved roads from last week's explosions. She sighed and continued her journey to an elevator. "N-I-N-3-2-0-0!" the CEO, Raymond O'Connell, shouted. "Where do you think you're off to?" Felicity turned around. Her brows furrowed. "It's Felicity Waters, Mr. O'Connell. My shift ended ten minutes ago." "Oh, so you have a name?" "What is it that you need?" "Reports. Discoveries. Anything for me?" Felicity pulled out a thick file and handed it over to Raymond. He rummaged through it and then threw it on the floor. "No one cares about 'prized kungas' or the ancient art of pro—" "Sir, if you actually looked, there are interesting findings about the missing women of Mesopotamia and, more specifically, this woman named—" "You're an excavator, not a historian." He stepped forward, his body inches away from her. "I expect you to find something of importance over the weekend, N-I-N-3-2-0-0." She rolled her eyes as he stormed off, collecting her file, and then entered the elevator. "I'm not one of your robots." She pressed "1" and slid down the back wall as the door closed. The ride down was quick, and she exited the elevator. Felicity didn't live far from work and her boyfriend, Alex, made sure of that. She walked toward a stairwell by a revolving door. She made it down a flight of steps before stopping at a red door. "Babe, I'm home," Felicity shouted. "What would you like to eat?" She trudged through the metal slab leading to their underground penthouse, dropping files and a briefcase to the corner of the entrance hall. Peppermint tealight candles lit the elongated hallway leading to the living room. Synthetic rose petals in shades of red and pink littered the charcoal tile floor that trailed up to the master bedroom. Felicity's fingers brushed against her curling lips, her breath hitching as she swayed the bedroom door open. Lavender wafted past her nostrils and her eyes fluttered in delight. She stalked forward and giggled. More petals covered the silk blanket. Someone hugged her from behind. She screamed before turning around. "Alex! You nearly scared me half to death." "Sorry, babe," he said. "Happy Anniversary." He pulled out a pearl necklace from under a pillow. A receipt from Orlando Jewelers fluttered to the ground. "For our tenth year together." Felicity kissed his cheek then turned around for him to clasp the necklace at the nape. He glided the tips of his fingers along the center of her spine. She twisted around and folded her arms behind his neck. Wrapping his arms around her, they rolled onto the bed and kissed. "Rough day, huh?" he asked. Felicity grunted, facing the other direction. She closed her eyes and scrunched her nose. "I don't know what it is with the CEO and addressing me like I'm one of his... just forget it." "Women and AIs are built differently than men. You know?" "I don't know, Alex. You tell me this all the time, but how true is that claim?" Alex pulled her close and brushed his fingers through her hair and listened as she hummed an ancient lullaby—one she translated five years ago from uncovered cuneiform texts. "Tell me the story of the woman and the flower," he pleaded. She shrugged. "I thought you'd tire of that?" "Never." Alex chuckled as Felicity sat up and placed his head on her lap. She combed through his hair and sighed. "There once was a woman, Ninhursag—named after the Sumerian mother-goddess that produced life—who married her childhood love, but her lover's father had other plans... "The day after their wedding, men from Eanna came to Ninhursag and dressed her in fine wool that covered her from the waist down and decorated her bare chest with beaded necklaces. They blessed her and said, 'Your mate's father waits for you at the chamber entrance of the White Temple of Anu. The women of Eanna cannot accompany you. You must travel alone.' "Disappointed, she left for Anu's temple—" Alex pulled her down and pressed his lips against hers. "Hungry?" Felicity twitched then gasped, processing what had just occurred. She laughed. "You know I don't eat." "How can I forget? You only drink your special coffee." "You won't even drink it, so I guess it is." She stuck her tongue out. "Can I finish the story, now?" "The woman and her flower can wait," he said. He blew out the candles and hovered over her. Felicity's hands explored his chest. She bit her bottom lip as she brushed her fingertips across his hardened n*****s. He moaned, snatching her hands away and pinning them above her head with one hand. With the other, he slid into her slacks and rubbed her c******s. "F*ck!" she moaned. Her hips bucked as his index finger plunged into her v****a, the come-hither motion forcing juices to escape her. Alex raised his now coated finger to his eyes, examining this foreign substance with a grin. "Open your mouth," he commanded. She did and then encased her lips around his finger, sucking on the thick slim. In her mind, she tasted like coconut oil and cinnamon. It was something that reminded her of work and the other women in her office. They smelt like that, too, whenever their private meetings ended with Raymond. After sucking on his finger for a few minutes, Alex slipped on a condom, tore off her pants and panties, and then penetrated her. His thrust was slow at first, then he gained momentum as Felicity's moans caterwauled. "I want you to c*m inside me," she mewled. "Your c**k feels so good." "So does your p*ssy," he groaned. "Oh, f*ck... I'm cumming!" Felicity flipped him onto his back and mounted him. She pulled off the condom and plunged his member deep inside. She rode him, slowly coming up on his shaft so that only his tip was inside before plunging down to his base. Then, she started unbuttoning her blouse, exposing her black-laced bra. She relieved her bouncing breasts from the bra. Alex's eyes widened and obliged, began sucking on them. He panted and said, "Fuck... You're going to make me c*m again if you keep going at this pace." "C*m inside me, then." She grinned and buried his c**k, swirling it in and out of her. She grasped at one of her breasts, squeezing it as she braced her other hand on his thigh. "I'm cumming!" "s**t!" Alex gripped her hips, thrusting inside until he came, too. Felicity collapsed on his chest, panting, and then giggled like a child. She lit a candle and sat it on a makeshift nightstand next to their bed. She laid next to him and covered herself with the silk blanket. "Alex, it's been ten years." She leaned into him while toying with her necklace. "I want to start a family." "It's not possible, Babe. Haven't you forgotten about Sagmi protocol?" Alex jumped out of bed and left the room. "I don't care about the damn protocol Ray O'Connell managed to get our governor to pass," she responded. "The difference is Sagmi-Repliques can't get pregnant. They're AIs, Alex." Felicity whimpered as static from the living room television flooded her ears. She rushed out of the room and turned the television off. "Why do you do this?" She waved her hand up and down at Alex, who was slumped on a leather couch. "We've been over this already. For the hundredth time, the doctors said you can't—" "What if they're wrong?" She flung herself against the edge of the couch, her hands clasped as if she were praying. "Please? I want to try it. That's all I ask." "No," he whispered. Her breath hitched. "Then, these ten years meant nothing to you?" Felicity bolted to the master bathroom and shut herself in. Alex groaned and clumped to the bathroom door, pressing his ears against it. He rolled his eyes as the rumbling of water from the faucet started, but worried over the loud clunk. He jangled the knob until he opened the door, pinching his nose as rotten eggs permeated from the steam rising in the tub. He rushed over to Felicity, who was submerged in hot water, and yanked her out. "Babe! What were you thinking?" She coughed up water and hugged him. "I'm sorry." She pulled away and gazed into his eyes. "I don't know what came over me. I—" "There's a local clinician off of Semoran Boulevard." He archaically smiled then kissed her cheek. "They accept walk-ins. We can go tomorrow." "Promise?" He nodded. They kissed once more before Alex made a sour face. He carried her to bed, gave her a tin-can coffee, then set his alarm for 5:00 A.M. Alex left the room for twenty minutes and came back, his breath minty with a hint of onion. He drifted off to sleep in Felicity's arms. Felicity stared at the ceiling, playing scenarios in her head, anticipating a positive result. "The promise of tomorrow," she repeated to herself. With that, her eyelids flapped shut.
