When the hissing of the bullets had ceased Vittorio, Marino and Mariapia, defrauded of glory this time but with their skins intact, had been able to get up from the pavement and join the group of surviving patriots. Being the highest in rank, the Deputy Commissioner had assumed command of it. He had asked warrant officer Piombini to update him on what had happened before the clash and tell him of any other orders from the Chief Commissioner. He had learned, with surprise, that Pelluso had ordered the non-commissioned officer to send his men to the home of the deceased Rosa Demaggi, to get the American weapons hidden in the cellar which was evidently, like Peppino’s, one of the hiding places which Mariapia had mentioned.
