A cooling Period

MAX’S POV

One thing I had come to know about my dearest Lilly was that she was an overly suspicious girl. She was also very inquisitive and would often ask me questions that I knew she didn’t want answers to. She obviously thought she wanted the answers but I knew she couldn’t stomach the truth. I could never bring myself to tell her what I did not only because we hadn’t been together that long but also because it was my job to protect her from my world. So far I had tried to keep her out of my world as best as I could and I had even convinced myself that not telling her how I truly felt for her was a good way of keeping her at arm's length but that was proving to be hard.

I had only been with her for a short while, and yet I could confidently say that I had never met anyone who could make me feel the way she did. She was still so young, innocent, and fragile, and I just wanted to give her all of my love and protect her from anything and everything that posed a danger to her. However, that love didn’t come without any dangers for her, the fact that I loved her so much made her my biggest weakness and that is why keeping her a secret was imperative for now.

I still had a lot of scores to settle and enemies to deal with. I couldn’t deal with any of them effectively while protecting my precious Lilly. I was aware that she was hurt by the fact that I could never express my true feelings for her, but that pain was nothing compared to what would happen if I exposed her as the love of my life. I knew that my reasoning in this matter was dumb but I figured if I never said I loved her, I could keep myself from being further weakened by her.

As usual, my night with her was peaceful. the reason why I went to her place after a bad day was because she was my peace. just being in her presence made me almost forget all my troubles. In a way, I felt like keeping her separate from this world meant I had one pure thing I could keep to myself. I even often overslept overslept. I was at her place, but today I wasn't that lucky.

I was jolted awake by my phone vibrating the following morning.

“hello…” I said sleepily

“Boss, we need you right now” Luca sounded panicked

“I am still asleep, I will come later on,” I said

“No boss, they know about her,” he said and that was enough to wake me up.

“I will be right there” I jumped to my feet and quickly put on my clothes. I tried to not wake Lilly up but she woke up before I even finished putting my clothes on.

“let me guess…another emergency,” she said and I sighed and sat back on the bed.

“yes, I promise I will make it up to you” I promised but she didn’t look convinced.

“I was looking forward to breakfast in bed today and maybe some early morning loving,” she said with a wink as she started unbuttoning my shirt.

She knew exactly what my weak spots were and she knew exactly how to exploit them. However, I snapped back into reality just as she was about to take my shirt off. I couldn’t afford to spend any more minutes here because the more time it took me to deal with this, the more at risk she was going to be. I couldn’t explain this to her because I knew it would freak her out and I would end up losing her.

“baby…I can't” I said placing a kiss on her forehead.

“Are you telling me they won’t survive one day without you?” she asked me and I nodded.

“They can but today is not that day. It’s a matter of life and death” I said wishing she knew just how serious that statement was. I had done a lot of bad things in my life and so had my father, but now karma was here to collect and I would be damned if karma collected her.

“I promise I will f**k your brains out when I come backfires said as I slid two of my fingers in her p***y and started f*****g her with them. She moaned softly and laid back. I knew her weak spots too and this was one of them. It didn’t take that long for her to reach her orgasm. I pulled my fingers out and licked them.

“You taste so good,” I said as I leaned down to her and kissed her. She wrapped her arms around me and tried pulling me closer to her but I refused.

“I really have to go,” I said again and she sighed and let me go.

I could see she was mad at me but I had to get out of here. I would mend her broken heart once I returned, for now, I had to go back to my house to make sure I kept her safe.

If Diego already knew where she was then this was going to be a very big problem. It meant that he was already actively looking for her and I had to figure out how I could keep the two from meeting. Diego had been hungering for my family's blood for years now. The only reason why he hadn’t tried to kill me yet was because he knew the consequences of doing that. He knew that a war would break out if he tried anything funny and that was why he had resorted to attacking anyone that I loved. I had already lost two girlfriends because of him and another one left me because she said the life I was living was too dangerous. That was the reason why I couldn’t bring myself to tell Lilly about the dangerous world that I was not only a part of but also controlled.

It was better to keep her in the dark than to have her worry about something she couldn’t do anything about.

It didn’t take me that long to reach my house as I literally flew through the highway that led to my house.

“what the f**k is going on?” I asked Luca as I parked my cat and he was already waiting for me outside.

“you were being followed,” he said and I kicked the wheel of my car.

“how the f**k did you guys not see that I was being followed? What the f**k is your job?” I asked him my eyes blazing with fury.

“Yes my job is to follow you and keep you safe but remember that you said”

“shut the f**k up, f**k what I said” I yelled as I stormed into the office. He was right I had told them to not follow me when I was going to see Lilly because I felt like doing so would only attract attention to me. I even made sure that I drove a regular car when I was going to her but I guess I hadn’t been careful enough.

“How much does he know?’ I asked him and he sighed.

“We don’t know, we don’t even know how long he has been following you. It could have been something that he only started doing now, or something that he had been doing for a while” He said and I threw everything that I was on my desk on the floor.

“Maybe it would be best if you don’t visit her for a while ” he suggested and I felt like slapping that light bulb out of his head.

“Why would you think that that is a great idea?” I asked him

“Because then he will be confused-“

“Don’t be a f*****g i***t, if I stop visiting her he will just approach her and do something to her. I have to take her away from here” I said

“how when she has to attend school?” he asked me

“Go and see her dean and make sure he agrees to allow her to attend her classes online” I ordered ignoring his concerns.

Luca and I knew how dangerous it was for a woman in this world and I couldn’t believe that he thought abandoning Lilly was the way to deal with this matter. I was going to take her away from this place and keep her away until things cooled down.
