I was so stunned by the manner in which my mother spoke to him, my brain didn't register everything she said.
Oddly enough, his eyes didn't burn with rage.
They were as calm as ever, but his smile vanished.
"Jessica, it is fate. You cannot oppose it."
"Oh, yeah? Watch me! Kayla. Upstairs. Now."
"M... Mom..."
"Get up and get inside. We're done talking!"
When her words finally registered with me, realizing she knew all this and she never said a f*****g word, it fell so heavy on my shoulders, I somehow lost the ability to breathe.
My entire body was tingling.
My eyes were burning.
And rage started to build up inside of me.
"You... You knew?"
This time, mom stood there and watched me.
"Of course, I knew. When I gave birth to you and mom saw it was a girl, she told me everything. And made me promise not to tell you anything until you turn eighteen."
"And you let me remove myself from Grams' life just like that?"
"I wouldn't force you into anything. It was her mistake to start the ritual at home instead of her astral palace. You saw it and weren't ready for the burden, so I allowed you to take some time to process it."
"Are you serious right now?"
She replied.
I heard the tone of her voice.
She was pleading with me.
But I was too angry.
They lied to me all my life.
She let me make plans that will never come true.
I was always destined to replace Grams and become a Star.
All the knowledge to connect the dots was pouring inside me.
And the more I found out, the more at peace I felt.
The more I understood.
The more the pain eased.
Finally, there was peace within me and silence around me.
My Lord was watching me cautiously.
Mom was looking defeated.
Then, when my Lord extended his hand to me, I took it and stood.
I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror we had outside, as I rose from the ground.
The brown of my eyes was now silver.
The same silver that had previously freaked me out, when I saw it on Grams.
But now I know.
They are a symbol of my power.
And I felt pride.
Grams' legacy was still alive.
Within me.
And I will honor her by carrying the torch onward.
"Kayla, please! Don't do this... Don't leave yet..."
"I'm sorry, but I must," I said, but my voice sounded strange like it was not my own.
Like all the Stars reflected my thoughts back at me and towards my mother.
A choir of loyal Stars.
An army of followers that have since already transformed into stardust.
It was not only destiny.
It was my will.
To follow, obey, and serve my Lord.
My mother's eyes teared up, but she understood.
My destiny does not wait.
And she does not have a say in a Star's destiny, no more than a Star has a say in the destiny of other celestials.
I nodded at her, then looked at my Lord.
"Daughter of Sheila, come, join your ranks and meet your fate."
With that said, a whirlwind of deep-sea blue and sunset purple smoke formed at our feet.
He was still holding my hand.
And as strange as it sounds, no fear dared creep up in my heart because of him.
I reveled in the feeling and closed my eyes.
The smoke covered us entirely and a strange sensation came over me.
I felt sick to my stomach like I was on a rollercoaster that was going up and down at the same time.
And then the sensation stopped.
I felt firm ground under my feet and I opened my eyes.
I didn't even understand what I was looking at.
Somewhere on my left, far away, seemed to be a body of salted water.
The wind made sure to let me know of that by bringing forward the smell that reminded me of summer and freedom.
Other than that, this place seemed to be surrounded by mountains that pierced the clouds.
And in this valley, there were a few houses, but, like old - very, VERY old - style.
Ancient - fits better.
Looks like something that belongs in the museum of Ancient History - beginning of civilization type stuff.
My heart knew the place.
Home.
The home of my bloodline.
The home of the Celeste bloodline.
Stars shining for our Lord.
Stars that will forever shine for him.
And when we become stardust, we shall guide the new Stars onto the river of knowledge.
The one gift that keeps on giving.
Passing on our knowledge, our legacies, to the future generations, thus ensuring that our Lord will always have his Stars lighting his path.
And our Lord will walk his path, taking his precious Stars into forever, with him.
That is what we strive for.
Infinity.
To have it bless us with knowledge and strength and keep us from wavering.
To always remind us what we live for.
Infinity.
Never have I been blessed with so much information.
The knowledge of the Stars is infinite.
And thus, this knowledge helps us guard our Lord's future.
That is what Stars are born to do.
And I, Kayla, daughter of Sheila, will gladly wear the burden of Infinity on my shoulders.
I will happily and selflessly become a guiding light, so my Lord can always look ahead and never falter.
In the name of Infinity, I pray to live and see my destiny unfold.
Infinity, show me fate!
