Chapter 7 An old wino lay sleeping just inside the doorway of an old abandoned building when a cold rain began pelting down on his face. Slowly the soft drizzle became heavy, and big drops splattered his face. His fluttering lids slowly opened to a dingy gray sky that rumbled with thunder and soaked the streets until they were shiny. This rundown part of town was known as the Darktown District. The streets were empty, and the buildings were half destroyed and rundown. It had been given its name by the homeless blacks who gathered here. Over the years, the close-knit group had given several of the wrecked buildings names of rich hotels such as the Fountainbleu, Waldorf-Astoria, Statler-Hilton, and so forth.
