Chapter 5 The road angled through the woods and I straddled the edge of the pavement and sand for my safety, not having any idea if I was wearing anything that would make me visible to a driver. The sun could have set, or I could be walking under a streetlamp for all I knew. As I walked, I heard a rustling several feet to my side. Probably an animal in the woods, but I couldn't be sure. "Hello, anyone there?” I called out, standing still for a moment. The rustling sounded again, but this time darted away. Maybe a dog or a cat. Hopefully not a bobcat or bear. What would I do if a bear came out of the forest? Was I supposed to play dead or run? The two options were very dissimilar. Running wasn't much of a choice for me and playing dead could quickly turn into being dead. I decided not
