Chapter 3Though the rains stopped before they woke up, Xander never thought of it as bad luck. Maybe it wasn’t best for the wildfires, but the rain had certainly done its share of fighting them. It meant he and Aaron could pair up and spend the day together, away from the frontline as they worked with techs to locate and contain the hotspots. There was no time for talking, if it didn’t concern the fires. And there was no room for touching, unless it was casual brushes against the other’s arm or uniform. It was satisfying, nonetheless.
