CHAPTER SIX Maybe it had been nothing but an illusion in the back of my mind but the blue in his orbs had morphed into a bright green color for barely a second. Or maybe it could have been the light in the Diner that confused me for just a split of a second. It had to be the light or maybe something reflected in his eyes. If venom was something anyone was capable of spitting with his eyes, then, Lucian would have won right now from the way he was looking at me. His expression was not just chilling, it was filled with …unimaginable rage. Sometimes it made me scared to the bone and sometimes, it made me want to stop and question him about it but probably from a safe distance.   “Lucian, are you going to walk in or do I have to push you?” Someone from somewhere behind Lucian questioned impatiently. I would recognize Chase’s voice anywhere. After all, I did share the French class with him and such charmers were easy to pick out from the crowd.   “No, that won’t be necessary Chase,” he replied curtly before walking past me, rudely brushing his shoulder against mine. I staggered to the side due to the force but somehow managed to prevent myself from falling. What the hell was wrong with him? It would not kill him to ask me politely to step on the side so he can walk in.   He was closely followed by Alexander who did not even bother to look at me. Someone clearly did not want me in this town and that made the two of us. Between the two boys, I had no idea who loathed me more. The last one to come in was Chase. He had a pair of Lil Wayne’s Diamond-encrusted Beats headphones wound around his neck but a playful grin worked its way up to his lips when he spotted Peggy.   “Hey Peggy,” His tone did come out as a bit flirtatious.   “Hi,” her voice came out hoarse almost as if her throat was grazed or something.   He then walked past her after slightly nodding at me. At least he was a bit nice, unlike his two friends. Peggy was quick to grab my hand and head to the parking lot where the Merc-Benz AMG C 63 was parked.   “Did you see that?” she questioned in a whisper.   “Yeah. Lucian acted really rude to me. What is his problem anyway? Woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or what?” I was not that surprised though. Maybe he didn’t really hate me and yet the fear that I felt around him was formidable. How could someone even scare me as much as he did when we did not even know each other?   “No, not that. Did you see how I made a complete fool in front of Chase? “Oh! We were talking about Chase.   “Don’t worry about that. He probably did not even notice,” I encouraged her. The guy had music blasting off his headphones and two cranky friends for company.   “Okay. Let’s gets home before grandma literally sends a search party after us,” She urged, her expression growing serious.   “She would do that?” I asked in disbelief as I slid in the Merc.   “You have no idea just how crazy grandma can get but she is pretty much the one person you can always count on. She’d do anything for power and family,”   She started the engine and in the exact record of twenty-five minutes we drove up to the mansion. Much to my surprise we found Peggy’s parents, my mother, Thomas and grandma pacing at the front yard. Grandma was yelling like somebody had just stolen her kidney, the rage in her voice shaking me for a mere moment.   “If something happens to my granddaughter, I will skin all of you then bury you alive,” she threatened. Whoa! She really did sound scary.   “She really cares about you,” I mused as she pulled to a stop.   “No, it’s not me she is worried about. Its you,” I frowned.  Me? Why would she be screaming around just because I went out for a few hours?   “I barely know her,” I muttered pushing the door open then stepping out. The evening chills pushed back my hair a bit, biting into my skin despite the fabric.   “Calm down grandma. We are both here,” Grandma turned around and despite her age. She was pretty strong.   She rushed over, pulling me into a much unexpected hug. I froze against her, taken aback by that gesture. I was not that big on hugging and stuff like that unless its my mother or Thomas.   “Um…can I at least breathe grandma?” I spoke rather strained but she eventually let go of me.   The clear relief on everyone’s face was surprising,” Okay, First, there is something called a phone and second, its only eight in the evening. So can you all stop acting like we’ve been gone for days?”   I brushed past all of them, heading straight to my room. Only when it was securely locked, did I let out a sigh. It was strange to have everyone get so worried over something small as this. I sat on the window, gazing at the star filled sky hanging over the town as far as my gaze could stretch. My life had once been like that; so full of light only for it to be extinguished so brutally when Roman died. This place was never going to be my home because the only home I knew, was Brooklyn where all the memories of my twin brother were. The knocking on the door cut through my thoughts.   “Go away mum,” I knew she was definitely the one behind that door.   “I just came to tell you that dinner is ready,” she answered softly.   Well, I was hungry. Peggy should have just let me have my fries. Or maybe this could just be the perfect time to confront the family. There was something about this town and they were going to tell me what exactly it was. I was tired of the strange stares, people hating me for no reason and whatever secrets they were keeping from me.   “I’m coming,” I stepped off the window, took my glasses off and walked out of the room. She was already gone and as I got into the living room, I could feel determination sipping up inside me. This was it. I had to be sure.   “Look, I’m not going to sit here and pretend that since I got in this town I’ve been fine because I haven’t.  Since the first day, everyone has been looking at me in a very curious way then don’t mention how there are kids in school who are making my life a living hell. They are convinced that somehow I’m in this town for a reason. I never even knew this town existed until Thomas popped into our lives, dragging us into the middle of nowhere!” I paused. Maybe I had gone overboard with the Thomas accusation when he has been nothing but nice to me,” Look, I just want to know, what the hell is going on in this town? Please,”   For a full minute no one spoke or even batted an eyelash. Mum was the first one to move, making her way towards me. Her palms cupped mine as she gazed into my eyes with warmth.   “It’s just the new girl syndrome and you’ll get over it soon enough,” she said with a warm, reassuring smile on her face.   “New girl syndrome?” I raised an eyebrow.   “Yes. You are the new girl and well, you know the people in town are bound to talk and say just anything. As soon as they get to know you and how wonderful you are, they will love you,”   “Yeah, right,” I sighed but something still didn’t feel right and sickeningly enough, whatever it was about this town, I was scared to figure it out and yet I wanted to know what it was. I had no idea whether it had something to do with this family or specifically just me and that was scary. The worst part in all this was how there was a tiny part in me that screamed the latter.
