12. Going for backup

1723 Words
Rage We couldn’t act on our own, we needed backup, and the best for the job was someone from the UberPack, because whatever we found out in Alpha Stone’s pack, we needed someone with authority that could act as a witness. That’s why Ax and I were on our way to the UberPack’s territory with the excuse of visiting my sister. They weren’t dumb, they knew we wanted something, they just didn’t know what. As expected, Ice and Risk were waiting for us at the edge of their territory. “Brother!” Risk jumped at me, and I hugged her warmly. “I knew you couldn’t live without me,” she smirked and then turned to see Ax, whom she greeted less enthusiastically, but that didn't stop Ice from growling a little behind her at their proximity.  “How are you, Ax? Long time not see.” “Glad to see you. How is Ice treating you?  Ready to run away from him?” he teased, to a not so amused Ice. “He is just wonderful,” she replied with a dreamy look on her face, which helped to calm Ice a little.  “You are welcome here,” Ice said, “but I have the impression this is not a simple visit.” “You are right. It’s something related to Xander’s new mate,” I said. “What? Is she a danger to him?” my little sister went into defensive mode, it was so cute to see. “It’s related to her, maybe,” Ax said. “But it’s something we should discuss somewhere more private.” “Of course, let go,” Ice guided us to the inside of the main building that acted as the equivalent to our Pack Houses. The feel was really uncomfortable inside, and I could tell that Ax was feeling the same. We both were on edge, and I was surprised to see that my sister wasn’t as affected. When she first came to the UberPack with Menace, she hated to be there because of the oppressive feeling, and now it was like it didn’t affect her. It was most likely a secondary effect of her mate bond. She was taking on Ice’s strong aura to protect her. “It feels heavy in here,” Ax commented. “Sorry about that,” Ice said. “One of the brats must be around, everyone increases their auras when they are around. They were convinced they were alphas, and our people enjoy to show them they are not,” he said with amusement. “I forgot some of Fang’s siblings were here,” I said. “How are they doing?” “They are so annoying,” my sister complained, “but they are learning. Slowly, but they are learning. They left their attitudes behind, they know they are nothing against a true alpha, but we still need to test them against some omegas, but we don’t have any here.” “They are basically the omegas in here,” Ice mocked them, and I could hear the glee in his voice.  I was sure that whatever the brats had done in the past, they were paying it in the UberPack.  The fact that everyone there loved Menace didn't help them any.  They were surrounded by enemies, by very powerful enemies. “Is Dagger here?” I asked, “I think he might want to be here for what we have to say.” “Of course, he must be close by. Let me send him a text so he can meet us.” We soon arrived at my sister’s quarters and took a seat.  Just a few minutes later Dagger walked in and greeted us. “So, what it is that you need to tell us?” my sister asks. “Well, Xander’s mate has an interesting past,” I start, and proceeds to tell them everything she said. She never said it was a secret, so I didn't feel bad sharing it with them. They were a little surprised by the story, and both Ice and Dagger looked a little reserved, as always that something involves the UberPack. “But that’s not all,” I add once I finish with Caroline’s story. “Ax brought to my attention something that happened at another pack.” Ax proceeds to explain what happened when we visited Alpha Stone’s pack, repeating what he already told me, but I still do my best not to miss a word, to see if there’s something new he can add. There’s silence around us once he is finished. “So what are you thinking?” Dagger asks me. “Well, I can’t go and tell Caroline that her sister might be alive, we don’t even know if it’s the same person, right? We don’t know if she is really a feral wolf being kept under control," I have to state the obvious.  Everyone is thinking it, but it needs to be out in the open.  “Feral wolves are not usually that young,” Ice says, “something is not fitting here.” “I think the same, but I guess we need some kind of proof before acting? So, I called Alpha Stone and asked if we can participate in the next Full Moon ceremony at his pack. I was thinking that Dagger could join us," I suggest, and that caught their attention.  “With the excuse of looking for my mate?” he asks a little pensive, not looking like he dislikes the idea. “That way we could take a look and confirm what’s going on before making waves. And if there’s something really going on, then you can act as witness.” “It’s not a bad plan,” Ice agrees.  "But if we are wrong about this, we could get into trouble." "Even if that girl is not Caroline's sister, something fishy is going on there," Ax says.  "This is something I wanted to bring to you since I found out, but life got in the way and it kind of slipped my mind, but, she doesn't look feral, she looks broken.  She was just a child when the attack happened, and her parents were betas, I just can't believe she could have done that herself.  And if she is indeed Caroline's lost sister, then she is paying for a crime she didn't commit.  She is just a victim being victimized all over again." "I get you," Ice says, "but we need to be careful with this." "That's why we should go and investigate.  If she is Caroline's sister, I will call Xander and my parents, as well as s***h and his parents, so they can explain what really happened.  If we are lucky the Alpha will see his mistake and let her come with us to live with her sister.  If not, we will have Dagger there to act as witness so we can petition the UberPack to intervene." "What if she is not Caroline's sister?" my own sister asked. "Well, in that case, we still need to check if she is really a danger, but from what I remember, that girl is not capable of hurting even a fly.  Worst case scenario, we get the UberPack involved for unfair punishment, and they can take over her sentence.  At this point I think the jail here would be an improvement," Ax says. "Well, you don't know our dungeons, so don't be so sure," Dagger jokes. "You didn't see that girl either.  She looked bad." "First step, we go there and take a look.  Depending on what we find we will come up with a plan," Dagger decides.  "I just need to ask my parents for some time so I can join you, but I might have to tell them what this is about," he warned us. "Especially if grandma is with them," Ice agrees.  "She has a special ability to pick up on this kind of things.  She will know we are planning something as soon as she takes a look at us." "Do you think she will try to stop us?" I have to ask, worried they will try to stop us.  And I say try, because Ax's guilt and my own need to do something for Xander and his mate won't allow us to stop, even if we need to move forward without Dagger. "No, I don't think so, but it might complicate things a little bit.  There are protocols and rules we have to follow.  If the Alpha knows that I was there investigating him, we might get into trouble if there is a false accusation," Dagger points out. "I assure you, something wrong is going on there," Ax says, "that little girl was terrified, and her condition was really bad.  Even if she had gone feral, it was most likely an accident, and she doesn't deserve being treated like that.  You won't regret helping with this, you will be doing the right thing." "I'll go right now to ask for time, and then we will start planning our next moves," Dagger says, while leaving the room.  I like that about him, he gets things done.   "It would be really funny if that girl turns out to be his mate," Ice says.  "He didn't want one before, but now, he says he can't wait to find her.  I guess that's one of the reasons he has been taking so many missions outside.  He wants the chance to find his True Mate." "Everyone needs their other half," my sister says, looking at Ice with so much love in her eyes that I feel a little sick. "Stop that," Ax protests.  "Not all of us have that yet, and it's kind of rude to keep reminding us of what we are missing." "Sorry, that wasn't my intention," my sisters apologizes, looking a little embarrassed. "He is just teasing you, don't worry about it," I told my sister, giving Ax a warning stare.  Even if I feel the same, he has no right to make my little sister feel bad. "Of course I was teasing," Ax immediately says, and we start talking about other stuff.   I feel like a weight came off my shoulders.  It feels good to have a plan and some backup.
