Chapter 1
Sunday night, good ole summers eve, I was working at my bar; Danny's bar. I was in the back placing orders, when Kyle one of my bartender's came running in the back.
"Danny, I need you up front now." He had said.
"What now, Kyle?" I had asked kinda rudely.
"There's a fight." He had told me.
That was all he had to say to me. He couldn't deal with them, he could but he didn't want to get into trouble again and go back to jail. So I usually jump in for him.
I rolled my eyes and pushed back my chair and walked out to the front. Where I see two dumb ass's being loud and pouching each other.
When I got in the middle of it, they some what stopped. Well kinda. One guy tried to hit me but I grabbed his hand and looked at him.
"You didn't just try and pouch me?" I had asked.
I twisted his arm to the right and looked at the other guy as well.
"This is my bar. What the hell is going on. This is a no fight zone." I had said.
I mean I try to have it that way. But it doesn't always work that way.
"He was hitting on my ole lady." The guy I had a hold of his hand said.
"Well your girl shouldn't be hitting on me." The other guy had said.
"Well I don't f*****g care. This is your first warning. The next won't be so pretty." I told them.
Even though I asked, I didn't really care for the answer. Its always something else. As I let go of the one dude, I walked away. It was fine until he had called me a stupid b***h.
I was glad I was wearing short shorts and a T-shirt with my cowboy boots tonight. It was like something told me I was gonna kick some ass.
As I spun kick the dude that called me a b***h into the wall and had my foot on his chest, he kinda freaked out.
"Now what did you just call me?" I had asked even though I knew.
"A stupid bitch." He choked out.
"Yea. Well guess what this stupid b***h is kicking you out of her bar." I said as I let my leg down and grabbed him by his neck and walked him out the door. "Your cut off for the night." I told him as I pushed him out the door.
His ole lady ran out the door behind us after I kicked him out. As I walked back in, I looked at the other dude.
"You want kicked out too?" I asked him.
"No, ma'am." He said.
"Good, keep it like that." I said as I walked to the back again.
As I got to the back, I hurried up and got my truck order in for Wednesday afternoon. By the time I got done with it, it was 10 minutes til midnight. About the time I close on Sunday's. So I got up and walked up front and got on top of the bar.
"Last call for alcohol! You have 5 minutes til I kick y'all out. If not get the hell out of my bar now." I yelled out.
A few people came up and got a few more drinks from Kyle and me. And the ones that didn't get drinks, left the bar.
Amy, my cocktail waitress, she helped clean up the floor when the last of the people left. I had kicked out one of my usually customers that comes every weekend. After I kicked them out, I had locked the door and started doing my counts with the money and what was left of everything else.
I paid Amy and Kyle their tips for the night out of the tip jar and the rest was mine.
After everything was all cleaned up, I set my peeps out the door and locked up myself. I was walking out to my truck saying goodnight to Amy and Kyle.
"Goodnight, guys. I'll see y'all Wednesday afternoon." I told him.
"Goodnight, Danny!" They yelled back.
"And Kyle, don't forget to call Lizzy tomorrow morning about working the next 3 nights please."
"Sure will boss." He said as he started walking to his truck.
As I jumped up in my truck, I started her up and drove around the area to make sure no one was standing around the bar. When I didn't see anyone, I had drove home to my beautiful 400 Acres farm home. Where my outside dog, Frankie; bluetick coonhound, met up with me by my drive way. Every single night like this he meets me until I pull up all the way to my house and park my truck and waits nicely for me to get out and tells me hello.
When I got out, Frankie sat down and I leaned into the truck and grabbed my leftovers and handed it to him. When I unlocked my side door, my inside dog, Lilly; beagle, was going crazy when I came in. I gave her a little bit of my leftovers as well.
As I went upstairs to my room, I took off my clothes and put on my night clothes and slide on my sandals and went back downstairs.
As I got to my side door, I called Lilly. "Lilly, come on. Let's go give horses their night snack." I told her.
As I opened the door, she ran out of the house. She ran over to the barn with Frankie following behind us. As I opened up the barn door, I saw my lovely 3 horses. One was a Black Quarter Horse name Flicka and the other one was Black and White Paint Horse name Creamer. Walker's horse was a painter as well and his name was Ranger. I gave them each a peppermint and a carrot.
As I was petting Creamer, I heard someone coming down from upstairs. When I looked it was my ranch hand, Charlie.
"Oh hey Danny, I didn't know you were home?" He had said.
"Yea, I just got home about ten minutes ago." I told him. "Did I wake you?" I asked as I turned around to look at him.
"No, you didn't. But little Miss Lilly here did." He said as he put Lilly down on the ground.
"Oh I'm sorry. I should really get that door fix." I said.
"No, I had it open a crack." Charlie told me.
"Oh, okay." I said as I went back to Flicka. "Sometime tomorrow, Jay is suppose to come by and check on the horses."
Jay was our animal vet. He always came out for me since I'm hardly home. That's a good thing about where I live, we got some good people here. If it wasn't for Jay or Charlie, I don't know what I would do. They both help me out around here. They are my only family, to be honest. Well other that Walker. But he isn't home just yet. But when he is home, he does help and if it wasn't for him, I would never have any of this in my life.
Nor Uncle Ray. This is actually his farm. He had handed it over to Walker so he could go back to the reservation and Walker had handed it over to me once I became of age just in case something happens to him and Alex.
But I let them still live with me, I mean I got a lot of space that I can handle.
"Tuesday, I have to go into town is there anything you need?" Charlie asked me.
"Umm, I don't think so. But you know your more than welcome to come inside and look to see if I need anything." I told him.
"I know. I just like asking you or your parents." He told me.
I nodded. "Oh, can you pick up some real nice thick steaks and some potatoes. I'll leave the money on the counter for you on Tuesday. I'll cook them on the grill and fry up some potatoes for us. And tell Jay to come as well and bring Amy with him."
"Yea, I'll do that. I'll get the good ones for us 5." Charlie said.
"Thanks, your the best." I told him as I went over to give him a kiss on the cheek. "Well goodnight, I'll see you in about 6/7 hours." I told him as I started walking towards the barn doors.
"Lilly, Frankie come on." I called.
As I walked out the barn, I closed the doors and went to the house. Walker was just pulling up. Frankie was going crazy when he saw him pull in. I waved at Walker goodnight then petted Frankie goodnight and Lilly and I went inside. I closed the door, and went back up to my room. Lilly got on the bed and laid down in her spot as I used the bathroom. When I made sure I done my night routine, I had turned off all the lights and turned on the night light and got into the bed.
The next day, I was sleeping so good, that I missed my alarm. What woke me up was Lilly scratching at the door. She heard Charlie or Walker downstairs. So I got up opened the door to let her out and I jumped in the shower. After the shower, I got dressed and put on my blue jeans, white tank top with blue jean jacket. I slide on my work cowboy boots on and placed my badge on my jacket. As I fixed my make-up a little and my hair up half way, I made my way downstairs where I saw Charlie was setting down breakfast.
"Mhmm, smells good Charlie." I said as I came into the kitchen.
"Why thank you. Here's your coffee." He said as he handed me my coffee mug.
"Thank you." I said as I sat down.
Walker came walking to the kitchen with a tired look on his face.
"Well good morning, Walker?" Charlie had said.
"Morning Charlie." Walker had said.
"You okay?" I had asked.
"No, your uncle T and I were out late at the office working on paperwork." He had told me.
Walker, Trivette, and I work together but I'm in charge now. Walker is next in line though. He just passed the duties to me. And some of his rangers still work with us just not as much as they did.
"So when does Alex come back home from being with her family?" I had asked.
Alex and Walker are married. And since they don't have kids of their own, I'm like their child since Walker took me in long time ago before they started dating.
"This weekend. I hope." He had said.
I went back to eating, I just had enough time to hurry up and eat before I head into work. As I was just half way through my breakfast, my cell phone started ringing.
I took it out of my pocket and placed it on the table and put it on speaker.
"Danny speaking." I called out.
"Danny it's CJ, where you at?" CJ asked me.
"I'm at home eating. Why, what's up?" I asked him.
"Mark is here."
When CJ said Mark, I looked at Charlie and Walker.
"What?" I said as I stood up fast. "He's not suppose to be here til Thursday." I said as I grabbed my gun belt and keys. I took one more bit of my food then grabbed my coffee.
"Well he's here." CJ said.
"f**k man. Tell him I'm stuck in traffic. Bye." I told him then hung up. "Give Frankie the rest of my food please." I told Charlie.
"I got it, go." He told me as he grabbed my food.
I looked at Walker, "I'll see you later at work." I told him then spoke again. "Bye Lilly." I said my goodbyes to my girl. Then walked out the door and ran to my truck. "Bye Frankie." I told him as he ran next to me.
As I hopped into the truck, I started her up and drive out the driveway honking my horn bye to Charlie and Walker.
As I finally hit the main road from my house, I had hit the gas and had it to 85 miles until I got close to town then slowed down to 55 miles. As I pulled up to work, I turned off my truck, stepped out the truck, and wrapped my gun belt around me and reached for my chain badge off my rearview mirror, then grabbed my coffee. As I walked into the building and rode the elevator to the 3rd floor, I saw Mark relaxing in my chair. Mark was my boss, who gave me the chance to become the top dog.
"I see your making yourself at home in my chair." I said as I came through the door.
"Well I'm glad to see you finally make it to work." Mark had said.
"Look, I was stuck in," I started to say.
"Stuck in traffic. Yea, I know. CJ told me." He had said.
I placed my mug on my desk and hung up my jacket on the hook next to my desk.
"I feel like, I handed you this spot for nothing. I don't see you have made anything happened. Your late, I get your an owner of a bar Danny but," Mark started to say.
"But nothing, Mark. You can ask my father; Walker, my uncle; Trivette, and everyone in this god damn room how I have changed s**t around for this place." I said as I pointed towards everyone in the room. "I have caught more men than you can count on two hands in the last two months since you gave me this spot. More than those other guys you have hired other than my father and uncle. Hell you have asked them before, how I ran s**t when I was just a cop at the police department before my father gave me this spot. But if you don't like how I run s**t as a sheriff in this town then I guess I'll f*****g step down. Good luck finding some dickwad, to fill my shoes." I had said. "And I may run/own a bar, but I only work there on the weekends and some nights if I have to. I am the most hard working woman, that can pull more s**t than any man can. So don't give me that load of bullshit."
I get Mark was my boss, but I wasn't letting someone push my buttons or walk all over me. Even though I was beyond pissed off at this moment.
Just then everyone was clapping their hands. I was so confused, I didn't know what to say or do.
"Well congratulations, Danny. You just passed my test." Mark said.
"What? What god damn test?" I had asked as I crossed my arms.
"This was all a test. I do this with all the people I hire for this spot. I done the same with your father as well. You stood up to me, I kinda wasn't expecting any of that from you. But you did. You sure are Walker's daughter. So congratulations." He told me as he held his hand out to me. "Your one hell of a woman, I would really hate to be the guys you f**k up."
"Well thank you." I said still a little confused.
"Just keep up the good work and I'll be stopping by again on Thursday for your reports." Mark said then got out of my chair and walked out the door, just as Walker and Trivette was coming in.
"You sure know how to raise em Walker." Mark told him then walked away.
I looked at CJ for a moment then looked around the whole room. Everyone was smiling at me before they went back to what they were doing before I had came in. I looked at Walker and Trivette as I sat down in my chair, my desk phone started going off.
I answered it. "Danny," I said.
"Hey Danny its Eric." Eric had said.
"Hey man, what's up?" I asked him.
Eric was the DA (District Attorney) of my building, when Alex is gone, he's pulls in for her, even though he's on the 5th floor, we we're both to lazy to come to either floors half the time, so we call each other. He was a nice handsome man, funny at points but gets on the spot.
"Can you come to my office?" He asked me.
I rolled my eyes. "Sure can. I'll be up in a few." I said then hung up.
I got up and walked out of my office to the elevator to go to the 5th floor. Once it stopped, I got off and went to Eric's office and walked in after I knocked on the door.
"Look Eric, whatever it is make it quick, I have stuff to do." I said as I walked in.
There was a young woman, sitting in a chair all beat up looking at me. I looked at her then at Eric.
"Ranger Walker, this is April. April this is Ranger Walker, our head Ranger sheriff." Eric had introduce us.
"Hello, sheriff." She said as she held her hand out.
"You can call me Danny, don't want you getting confused from me and my father that works here." I said as I leaned against Eric's desk. "What's going on, what happened to you?" I had asked.
"My husband, he had attack me. And this is the last straw I can take." She told me. "I'm pregnant and I don't want him around me or the baby."
"How far are you?" I had asked.
"Almost 4 months." She says. "But he doesn't know. I kinda actually found out last month."
"Okay, come with me downstairs to my office and we can file a report." I had said.
She nodded and we all went to the elevator and went down to my floor. Once we got there, we walked in and my father and uncle were talking.
I went over to my desk and she sat across from me. I started clicking on my computer to get the paperwork I needed. Once I had clicked what I needed, I had printed the paperwork, then walked over to the printer. I grabbed them and went back over to my desk to hand them to her with a pen.
"Okay, just fill these out and sign the last two papers," I said pointing everything out to her. "And we can go from there." I said.
She nodded and started filling out the paperwork. I went over to the water cooler and got her a cup of water. I put it on the desk next to her then went over to Walker and Trivette.
"So what's the deal?" Walker asked.
"Well her name is April and her husband is beating on her." I had said. "Oh and she's 4 months pregnant."
"Are you serious?" Trivette had said. "The men to do something to a beautiful woman that's carrying they child."
"That's the thing uncle T, he doesn't know. She kinda just found out." I had told him.
Uncle T just looked at me like I said something wrong but didn't say anything.
As we were talking, Ranger Gage and Ranger Cooke came walking in. They were my favorite Ranger's on top of CJ, my best friend, and my dad's old friends that still work with us but not as much. One of them I worked with on the police force, Carlos he was a cool dude. We were actually partners for a while, until I joined the Texas Ranger's.
"There's my girl!" Gage had said when he got over to me.
Gage is always flirting with me. If its not me its Cooke. Which is kinda funny when he flirts with her.
"Hey Gage, Cooke." I had said.
"So how are you feeling today after yesterday work out?" Cooke asked me.
"Actually I feel great. What you and I did, I feel more relaxed. Even though I'm still a little tight." I said making Gage look at us like what the hell did we do.
"Umm, should I ask what you two done yesterday without me?" He had to say.
Well damn that kinda backed fired on us. My father and uncle looked at all of us and then shook their heads. They knew what me and Sydney were doing to Gage.
"Gage, we just worked out. I needed to take some stress out and Sydney just helped me out." I told him as Sydney done our little finger movement.
"Mhm sure." He had said making us laughed .
I shook my head at him then went over to my desk again to see if April needed any help or if she was done. She was just signing the paperwork when I sat down. She looked at me as I was sitting down then handed me the paperwork.
"Here you go, Ranger Walker." April has said.
"Please call me Danny. Walker is my father." I told her pointing over to him.
She looked over to where I was pointing to and saw him talking to the others.
"He seems nice." She said smiling a little.
"Yea, he is. Since the day he saved me." I said.
"Huh?" She said looking back at me.
"Walker's my adopted father. He rescued me long time ago and well he brought me into his life. Everything to this day is for him. He thought me everything I know." I told her. "Well other than the girl stuff. His wife now has helped when they were coworkers/friends." I said chuckling a little.
"That was nice." She said. "Thank you for everything, I should get going. I wanna get some of my things before he gets home."
"Where will you be going? May I ask?"
"My parents in Houston, Texas. He don't know where they will so, I should be good." She told me.
I nodded. "Here," I said as I wrote down my cell phone number, office number, and pager number. "Call, text, or page me for anything. And if he shows up just page me by 911 and I'll know what's up." I told her handing her my card.
"Sure will Ranger Danny." She said as she got up.
After she had left, it was a little boring day. I done nothing but paperwork from the last 4 cases that we have done. Gage and Cooke were in and out of the office for different kinds of ranger duties. Walker and Trivette were on a case due with missing kids and he didn't want me to get involved with it since that was a weak part for me since I was a kid and something bad had happened to me. Plus I also wanted to stay open for April just in case something had happened.
By the time I had saw Walker and Trivette it was a little after 8 pm and I was just finishing up most of my paperwork for Mark. I had let CJ and some of the others go for the night. CJ didn't want to leave me just in case if April had called so he could be my back up but I told him it was fine to go.
As my father and uncle were doing their paperwork, I had started to fall asleep at my desk, typing up some of my cases. I was sleeping good until my phone had went off. I jumped up and looked at my phone and saw a random number calling.
"Ranger Danny speaking." I had answered.
"Danny!" A woman had scream. It sounded like April.
"April!" I had spoken loudly into the phone.
Then I heard loud noises and crashes on top of the screams.
"April, I'm on my way." I said as I hung up the phone then looked at her folder for her address then grabbed my gun and keys and ran out the office.
As I ran to my truck, Walker was right on the next second.
"I'll not letting you go their alone." He told me as he put his seat belt on.
I nodded and started the truck and drove to where the address had said to go. Once I got there, I had saw people standing outside in their yards looking over towards a house that I was guessing was April's. When I parked, I ran out of the truck over to the house and kicked in the door with my gun ready to take out.
"April, where are you?" I called out.
"In the bedroom!" She called out.
"Shut up b***h!" Then I heard slap with her screaming.
I ran towards where the sound was at and saw her on the floor in burses and a bloody face. When I came into view the man had pointed a gun at me.
"Don't you come any closer, I'll kill her." He has yelled.
"No you won't. I won't let you hurt her or your baby." I had said as I lowered my hand close to my gun to get it ready.
"Ha baby. Your lying." He said laughing a little. "This b***h isn't pregnant, she can't have kids."
"But she is. Ask her, she told me this morning." I had said. "April tell him."
"She's right, Jon. I just found out. After so many tries, we finally got one." April told him trying to get up.
I went over to her to help her up.
"Stop, I said don't come any closer." He yelled.
"I'm just gonna help her up on the bed." I said as I got to her.
I done what I said, helped her up onto her bed as I went to turn around with the gun behind my back and walked a little away from her.
"Now, just put your gun down and we can talk about all of this like normal people. It doesn't have to be like this." I had said.
"b***h I don't have to do what you say. This is my house, my wife." He yells then I saw my father at the door.
Jon saw me look at the door then turn to aim the gun at whoever was at the door but I was fast enough to kick the gun out of his hand making it fall to the ground, I kicked it them aimed my gun at him.
"This could have been done the easy way but you had to do it the hard way." I had said.
He went to hit me but hit my gun out of my hands making it fall to the ground, making him run for his gun but I was fast enough to have kicked him in the face then kicked the gun under the bed and started kicking ass. He didn't like what I was doing to him. He had got up and ran into me, making me break the bedroom window with my elbow but I didn't fall through it. I kneed him in the stomach a few times before he let me go.
"b***h! Think you can fight like a grown ass man. Let's see what you can do." He had said.
"April run!" I had yelled to her at the same time I had done a round house kick to him making him hit the wall.
He went to pouch me but I had blocked it with my arms then done a few punches of myself before I done a few More rounds house kicks. The last one I had done, sending him out the window. I went to grabbed him but it was too late. He slide down the roof down to the ground.
Everyone that was outside all gasped from what they had saw. And I was a little shocked at what just happened. Like I couldn't believe what just happened.
As I leaned back into the house, I grabbed my gun but it back on me and grabbed a blanket from the chair and went to find April downstairs with my father in his arms. I wrapped it around her and hugged her while my father had called for help. As he done that, he grabbed one of the sheets that went on the couch and went out to cover up Jon.
"April I'm sorry." I had told her.
"No, you had to do what you had to do. He was gonna shoot you and me." She had said.
"Danny she's right. He started to fight you. You just protected yourself. And if it wasn't for you he would have killed April and the baby." My father had said.
I nodded to them.
After a few hours, they took care of Jon's body and April's parents had came and met April had the station to take her home with them. Me well, I had to do some more paperwork on what just happened. I was just about done, when I had fell asleep again. But only being woken up, from Walker telling me to go home.
"Danny, let's go home. You can ride with me home." Walker had said.
I nodded at him as I put my computer to sleep, turned my lamp off, and grabbed my stuff.
Once I had gotten in Walker's truck, I had put my head against the door and somewhat fallen asleep there til the time we got home. Once we got home, I went to my room and went straight to bed. The day had wore me out, it had drained it.
