16 MELATI ENTERED HER apartment and got changed out of her bloodied clothes. She took the sarong and stained kebaya to the living room, where she folded them and put them underneath the shrine. She went to her tiny bedroom and, from the back of the wardrobe, retrieved a beautiful bronze incense burner and a few sticks of contraband incense—banned by StatOp because the stuff tended to set off the fire alarms. From the shelf above the dining table, she took a photograph of two men, a girl of about ten and a toddler. It was taken in the brand new station hall. Uncle carried the toddler, Rina.
