Chapter 6

We walked for a few more minutes when suddenly a big building came into view. It wasn't bigger than the main house, it was about half the size. Tucked off to the left, completely out of sight of the main house. The outside of the building was identical to the main house. As soon as we walked through the front doors it looked just like a medical clinic. I felt like I just walked through the twilight zone. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a lady sitting behind the front desk. "Hello Alpha, How can I help you today?" She said it as she gave him a respectful nod of her head. I noticed her eyes flashed down to our entwined hands. When her eyes made contact with mine, she gave me a respectful nod as well. What the hell is going on? "Hello Gretchen, We need to see Dr. Meyer right away." There was no mistaking that it was an order, but he also said it with respect at the same time. "Yes, Alpha. Please wait in her office, she will be finished up with her patient at any moment." Her words dripped with respect, as she downcast her eyes. He gave her a nod, then led me to Dr. Meyer's office. Her office looked like any other Dr.'s office you'd see. It was all greys and beige, not very appealing to the eye. We sat down on the couch to wait for the Doc, which didn't take long. As soon as we sat down, the door opened to reveal a middle-aged woman, she was very pretty for her age. She had shoulder-length, dark russet hair that was thick and wavy, with bright blue eyes. She was on the shorter side and slender. "Alpha, how can I help you today?" She asked while sitting down in one of the chairs in front of us. "Well, Doc I would like to introduce you to my mate, Ray," He was staring at me while he said it, his eyes held endearment, while he announced I'm his Mate. Which I still don't fully understand. "Congratulations Alpha, that's great news." She then turned her attention on me. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ray." She gave me a respectful nod just like the receptionist did. I wondered, why they gave me the same respect as their Alpha. "So how can I help you two today?" She said while leaning back in her chair with her knees crossed. "Well, Ray here is a comet-born wolf." Luke began, the doc's eyes bugged out for a split second. "That is something special indeed." She seemed in awe of me now, her eyes held intense curiosity, which was a little uncomfortable. "Yes, she is very special. But there's more." he paused briefly, "She wasn't born a werewolf." He then began to explain everything, for the second time. From the first night, we met, to now. She stared at me the whole time he was explaining. I felt like I was under a microscope, but if she could give me answers I'd tolerate it. "Sense you specialized in genetics we were wondering if you could give us some answers." He finished while glancing at me. Her gaze never faltered from me. "Of course. I need to ask a few questions before I draw some blood. Is that alright Ray?" "Of course. I'll do basically anything if it will give me answers." she seemed pleased with my answer. Luke tightened his hand that was holding mine giving me what felt like support. "To start off, Ray were you adopted?" I had to fight not to roll my eyes. Honestly, would I be so confused if I was adopted? No, I don't think so. I had a feeling I knew where these questions were going. "No, I'm not adopted. I was born March Twenty-second 18 years ago, the same night a comet passed by. My mom won't tell me what happened to my dad. It's been just her and I since before I can remember. I practically raised myself, my mom works all the time. I've always loved the forest, it's always been my happy place. My life has been pretty normal up until the night he bit me." I rattled off the answers to the questions I figured she was going to ask. Nodding my head towards Luke when I said the last part. She looked taken aback by the information I just unloaded, but I figured that it would get the generic questions out of the way. It seems I was right, she started writing down what I assumed were key points. She then stood up and retrieved a phlebotomy kit from a drawer in her desk. I rolled up my sleeve as she walked back over, she then began to prep my arm and drew a couple, vials of blood. If it would get me answers she could take a whole pint. "I'm going to go run this through the lab and see what I find, should take about Twenty-five minutes or so. You two can wait here if you'd like." Once the door was closed, I let out a deep sigh, leaning back into the couch. I could feel Luke's burning gaze on me. Why did he always have to do that? The way he stared at me I was starting to feel like a sideshow in the circus. "Why do you always do that?" I couldn't help it, the question just kind of fell out of my mouth. "Do what?" He slyly replied. Really a question with a question? I hated it when people did that. So instead of replying, I took my hand back, crossing my arms. He let out a deep sigh in return. "I'm sorry. I keep staring because I can't believe I found my mate and how beautiful she is. We may still be figuring things out, even I don't understand all of, what's going on. And I know you don't understand the whole Mate thing quite yet. But if you'd like, that is something I can help you understand. I know we talked about it briefly but I know you have questions." He gave me a small smile, which I couldn't refuse for some reason. "Ok then. Explain this mate thing from start to finish on what you know." I figured if he told me everything he knew about it maybe then it would start to make sense. "Alright, I was always told that every wolf has a destined mate. As I've briefly told you, sometimes it's a mated pair of two wolves, sometimes the mated pair will be human and a wolf. But each wolf has a fated mate out there. Once a wolf turns eighteen, they then can find their mate. Sometimes it happens quickly, sometimes the wolf has to wait. Every time a wolf meets their mate it's a little different, some lock eyes and know instantly, some catch the scent of their mate first, and some know as soon as they touch one another, it's different for every couple. Also, each mate has a specific scent that only their destined can smell. Like when you told me I smell like sage and cedarwood, no one else smells that on me. Just like you smell like crisp green apples and lilies to me. I somehow caught your scent when I was on a run the night we met and followed it, to you. That's how I knew you are my mate. But I believe your wolf told you I was your mate when we touched the first time at school." He glanced at me, judging my reaction to the information he just unloaded. To be honest, my mind was reeling with the information I was just given, but I kept a blank face. I swear he could always see past the face I put up. "As I briefly told you at your house. A Mate is your soulmate, your other half, the one true person meant for you. They make you feel whole. It's like gravity is no longer tying you to the earth, that person is. The, want and need for your mate is unparalleled." He was now looking off in the distance as he was talking. I couldn't tell if he just knew all this from watching other mated pairs or if he was speaking about me. Either way, we both fell silent, I was absorbing everything, he was staring off in the distance still. Soon after the Doc walked back into the room. From the look on her face, I could tell she found something, whether or not it was gonna give answers or more questions was the mystery at hand. She took her previous seat looking at both of us. "Well, my dear you are definitely very special indeed," she stated then just stared at me. "Uhh. Not to sound too crude, but what the f**k does that mean?" I almost yelled. I was sick of beating around the bush I wanted answers, now. I could have sworn I saw Luke's chest move in a silent chuckle out of the corner of my eye but my focus was on the doc. She seemed taken aback by my outburst but recovered quickly. I personally could care less what anyone thought right now. "Well, you are not a born wolf, per se." She paused. Luke and I made eye contact briefly, then moved our attention back to the doc. "Your blood work showed that you are indeed a full wolf but you were not born that way. I've only ever heard a theory about this. Both of your parents must have a recessive wolf gene, which is why they appear human because they are. Similar to how you got your red hair as well both parents have to have the recessive gene. It's also the reason why you've always been drawn to the forest. That is why you changed when Luke "bit" you. Since you two are mates, only he could wake up the wolf you had laying dormant. There is something else as well that I wasn't expecting. Both of your parents had not just a normal recessive wolf gene but an alpha recessive gene. I've never heard or seen that in my entire time practicing. It does explain your size including your powers from being comet born. Have you noticed any changes to your human appearance since all this started?" She asked me at the end. Holy s**t! What the hell kind of twisted fate is that? By chance, both my parents have a recessive wolf gene and not even a normal wolf, an alpha wolf gene, and I just so happen to be born under a comet. My mind was swirling with this newfound info. I was just sitting there, practically in shock until I started feeling both of their gazes on me. " My hair has become a deeper red, my skin smoothed, and I have muscles forming I'm not even working for. My weight is rearranging as well." I answered the doc in a daze. She was taking notes as I told her my changes. Luke was just staring at me again. It was seeming to become a new habit of his. Coming out of my daze slightly I asked, "So what does this mean now? A comet born Alpha?" The doc rested her hands on the folder in her lap, like they do when they have bad news. "I'm not quite sure. Ray, you are the first comet-born alpha to my knowledge. In our history, there has never been another documented." she stated, then continued, " I'm pretty sure you are the most powerful werewolf thus far." Oh great! No pressure or anything. Leaning forward I put my elbows on my knees and my head in my hands. Next, they would tell me I have to save the world. Right, when I felt this was all becoming too much, I felt tingles on my back. Luke was rubbing my back in between my shoulder blades. I wonder if he knew that was my sweet spot, Skye would always rub between my shoulder blades when we were kids having sleepovers. She still did it if I was angry or depressed. The combination of the tingles and him rubbing that special spot, had my shoulders almost instantly lose tension. Starting to calm down some, I realized I needed food and I wanted to go run. But I also realized if I did have all this power I need to learn to control it and figure out what I am capable of, so I don't hurt anyone. I needed to start training. No one had said anything for a couple of minutes so I broke the silence. "Thank you, Doc for all your help so far. I'm sure we will be seeing each other frequently as I figure all this out." I stood turning to Luke, "I need food," as an afterthought I threw in a "Please" But I didn't wait for his reply instead I turned on my heel headed for the door. I was almost to the front desk when I finally heard his boots coming after me. When he finally caught up to me he grabbed my hand, lacing our fingers together. I guess that was becoming a habit of his, as of right now I welcomed it. Leaving the clinic I could feel everyone staring at us, once our back was turned. I could still feel gazes from others as we walked back to the Packhouse. I tuned it out, too caught up in my own thoughts to worry. ** Back at the Packhouse, he opened the front door for me to which I walked in heading straight for the kitchen. Making my self at home I began looking through the huge fridge and found all the fixings for burgers, so I set to work. Luke walked in right as I was putting a pan on the stove, raising his eyebrows at me, he took a seat at one of the barstools, sitting on the opposite side of the huge island that has the stovetop built-in. " Made yourself at home have you?" I could see and hear the smirk he had plastered on his face. "Well I'm hungry and you keep saying we are mates, being destined and all that. So I figure why not make myself comfortable." I stated so matter of factly, keeping my focus on the task at hand. Silence washed over us after that. I was just starting to put the burgers together when I heard footsteps rounding the corner into the kitchen. "What smells so good?" A random guy asked. He wasn't quite as tall or bulky as Luke but he was still extremely big. He had sandy brown, surfer boy hair and steel grey eyes. His body was just as toned as Luke's, he was gorgeous, but not my type. Luke let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes. "This is my Beta Adrian also, best friend whos a pain in my ass." The last part seemed to make, Adrian's smile get even bigger as he waltzed over to us. "I thought I told everyone to stay away from the main floor, for tonight?" The question was clearly directed at Adrian but he ignored it, making Luke's brow furrow. I finished assembling two burgers, setting one in front of Luke, then immediately taking a bite of mine. Right as Luke reached for his burger, Adrian snatched it away taking a huge bite. A Rumbling growl came from Luke, not even a second later I heard the barstool he was sitting on hit the ground. 'Oh, Boy,' Was all, I could think. Adrian took another bite letting out a sound of pleasure. At that point, I finished my burger and assembled another as fast as I could. Luke was stalking Adrian into the wall. Right before it escalated anymore I put my hand on Luke's shoulder feeling him relax ever so slightly at, my touch. I then held up the burger I just put together in front of him. He finally turned to me, looking at me with surprise, I noticed his eyes had gone pitch black, I'd have to ask about that later. He seemed calmed down now, which was good I didn't feel like cleaning up a mess or seeing food go to waste. I turned to look at Adrian who was still stuffing his face. I had a pretty good feeling he did that kind of thing a lot, antagonizing Luke that is. We were going to get along great I feel. I held out my hand, " Hi I'm Ray." Adrian shook my hand almost instantly. "It's nice to finally meet you. He was never going to introduce us." He said mean-mugging Luke, who in return just shrugged now sitting at the barstool he knocked over earlier, happily eating his burger, to which I gave an eye roll. "You make a seriously good burger, Luna," Adrian stated. I saw Luke tense slightly at the title he called me. I chose to ignore it, for now, Luke and I would discuss our relationship later. "Thank you, I've always liked to cook." I went back to the counter and made myself another burger. Luke gave me a small smile, "Yes it was very good. Thank you." He said. I gave a small nod finishing my second burger. Then making the boys a second as well. Once Luke was finished I stated "I wanna go for a run," I needed to blow off some steam. Luke stood up and opened the sliding door leading outside from the kitchen, headed outside. I followed him all the way to the tree line, where we walked into the forest three meters or so. I went behind a big cedar tree checking my surroundings before I started to strip. Once naked I shifted, I didn't even feel discomfort with my shifts anymore. I walked out into the open a couple of seconds before Luke. When his jet black wolf stepped out from behind a tree it gave me a jolt I wasn't familiar with. I took off running tired of waiting, I could hear him behind me instantly. Although if I didn't know any better, I'd say he was having slight difficulty keeping up. Maybe that was one of my powers, I was faster than a normal wolf. I decided to test my theory, pushing myself even harder, I ran faster. I know, Luke was having a hard time keeping up now because he was about ten paces behind me but I kept going. It felt like I ran about ten miles before I decided to start slowing down so he could catch up. When he caught up to me, his wolf eyes looked surprised. I bet no one has ever outrun him, him being alpha and all. I shook my fur out, taking off to where I left my clothes. Back where we left our clothes we shifted and got dressed headed back to the Packhouse. We entered through the kitchen, I was shocked to see that the mess I made cooking was all cleaned up and everything was back to normal. I was planning on cleaning it up after our run. He took my hand and led me up the massive staircase to the top floor. That he said earlier belonged to the Alpha and Luna. He opened a huge Wooden door to reveal what looked like an open floor plan apartment but from a quick glance, it had five bedrooms. Luke was rubbing the back of his neck as if he was nervous, which I found odd. "I figured it's late and you've had a long day, so you could just crash here for the night. I'll take the couch and you take the bed." He walked off into what I assumed to be the master bedroom. I followed. He was pulling out a shirt and sweats from a dresser as I walked through the door. His room was very similar to his office in style and color. I liked it. It felt very homey. He handed me the clothes and left the room, closing the door behind him. I changed into the comfy clothes he handed me, taking a deep inhale of his scent that lingered on the shirt. I opened the door to see him sitting on the couch with his head leaning back and arms spread out along the back of it like he was exhausted. Being a little bold I decided to sit on the couch right next to him, with my feet tucked up under me I had my knees resting on his thigh. I felt him tense, then relax as he lifted his head to look at me. "I'm not quite ready for bed. Can we put on a movie and talk a bit?" I said breaking the silence. He handed me the remote, I turned on the tv and put on the first movie I could find and that just so happened to be 'Gone in sixty seconds' Another one of my favorite movies. He spoke up after a few moments, "You can run really fast." "I was trying to push myself to see what I could do. Got to figure out my abilities sooner than later so I can master them. Which reminds me I need to train so when can I start that?" I said it a little too eagerly I think because he looked at me surprised. "I will train you whenever you want. Just tell me a schedule that works for you ." "But don't you have alpha duties?" I asked a little confused. "Yes I do but my mate is more important and it wouldn't be very easy for you to be enrolled in normal training without you living here." He said it so matter of factly. "Speaking of which, what are we?" I asked him. His brows furrowed in confusion, "We are mates." "Yes, I know that. We've been over that but what are we? Are we going to build this or continue to act awkward around each other? I mean your beta called me Luna. We haven't even discussed that factor yet." The words just tumbled out of my mouth. I liked Luke, I felt comfortable around him, I was starting to feel that mate pull he told me about. I guess I was gonna have to be the stubborn redhead I'm known to be. I felt his arm come down around my waist holding me closer to his side. This felt right, I couldn't get past that feeling. "Adrian is an ass who doesn't know how to listen, he may be my beta and best friend but I will kick his ass in training. I'm sorry I've been a little awkward I just don't want to do something wrong nor do I want to come off too strong. As for the Luna thing, that is entirely your decision. You are my mate of course I want you to be my Luna, you're the only one meant to be. But I also won't force you to take that title, it's there when you're ready for it. I just hope you will want to be by my side." He was staring off to the side as he finished. I had a strong feeling this is where I was meant to be, so what I said next surprised both of us. "I'll be your Luna so long as you promise to stay by me and help me understand my powers," I said with more confidence than I thought. His eyes got big with surprise, then a smile broke out on his face that spread to me as well. He jumped up, spinning me around. He sat back down and I ended up in his lap instead of the couch. His face was buried in the crook of my neck, taking deep breaths. He mumbled, "I Promise." Right by my ear, his voice had gone husky. I couldn't help the shivers that ran down my back. I turned my head to look at him. When our eyes met, I don't know who moved first but the next thing I knew his lips were on mine and mine on his. He even tasted like sage while he smelt like he was oozing cedarwood. He was exploring my waist and back with his hands as the kiss deepened, he flicked his tongue against my lip asking for entrance, to which I granted. Our tongues were fighting for dominance, it felt like my whole body was buzzing with tingles. When we finally came up for air, he leaned his forehead against mine. I was trying to slow my racing heart. We sat like that for a while, in each other's arms just holding each other. I was starting to get drowsy, standing up I grabbed his hand headed for the bedroom. "Ray, what are you doing?" He asked suddenly when I was closing the door. "Well, I'm tired and I don't want to be away from you at the moment so your sleeping in here with me. Just sleep." I finished with a yawn, crawling into what I figured is a California king bed. I heard his shirt hit the floor, then felt the bed move as he got in bed behind me wrapping his arm around my waist, spooning me. We fit perfectly, I don't think I'd ever been this comfortable. I could feel his breath on my neck lulling me to sleep. Before I knew it, sleep overcame me.
