CHAPTER SEVENGisela awoke as the maid drew back the heavy curtains over the windows. The spring sunshine came pouring in to make a pattern of gold on the carpet. For a moment she wondered where she was and then with a little glow of excitement remembered. She was at Hawke Castle, the guest of Lord Quenby, impersonating the Empress of Austria, and so far at any rate she had not failed the trust that had been put in her. Difficult, indeed terrifying at moments, as her dinner with Lord Quenby last night had been, she was certain that never during the whole evening had he questioned her identity.
