CHAPTER FOURThey drove in silence for some way and then on an impulse, Gisela turned towards the Squire and slipped her hand into his. She said nothing, but by the quick pressure of his fingers she knew that he understood and that she was fighting against her tears and could not speak. After a moment he said a little gruffly, “Are you all right?” “Yes, thank you, – Papa.” The words came tremulously between her lips, but even as she said them she knew that they were the truth.
