“I have a request, sir.” MacKim stood at attention, acutely aware that it was unusual for a mere corporal to approach an officer directly. He hoped that Captain Cameron’s leniency extended to such an imposition. “What is it, MacKim?” Cameron waved a hand to calm down a nearby indignant sergeant. “I wish to visit the hospital at the Île D’Orléans, sir.” MacKim knew he could be flogged for approaching an officer, and his request might be taken as an opportunity to desert. “Why?” Cameron was instantly suspicious. “I have a friend there, sir. A Ranger named Wooler.” Cameron’s frown cleared. “Oh, yes.
