Most terrible of all, Daniel saw that hoisted at the end of each processional arm were sled-like boards. Strapped to each, tied down by thick leather straps, lay Grüber and Rex. Both were conscious and struggling helplessly.
Daniel"s knees buckled. The end had come. He knew that now. The procession fanned out into a rough semi-circle, all of them turning to face inwards. They hauled the two men up to the dais and forcibly laid them upon the altar, strapping them down. When the bearers stepped back, the chanting became louder and more intense.
