Daniel blinked a few times, squinting through the darkness, trying to readjust to his new surroundings. He was lying on a hard wooden bench, alone in a stark, cold, grey room, bars across the entrance. Nothing else. Bare, barren, brutal. A prison cell of some description and, by the look of the rusted iron bars, an old and forgotten one. His bones ached with cold, his ankle sore with the rest of him. He hugged himself, trying to conjure up some warmth. Whoever brought him here had taken his coat, for he wore only a thin shirt, and the icy dampness seeped into his very marrow. Sitting on the bench, bent double, he wondered how long he had been here, how long he would have to remain. Memories slowly returned, his mind filled with pictures of the creature that had confronted him. No matter
