A great deal played on his mind, none of it good. Anxious, trapped, unable to contact his Dad, he was now a prisoner in his own home. And Martha, the only one who had given him the remotest piece of understanding, had mysteriously disappeared on some extended free time. Maria, too, where had she gone? It seemed that a massive hole had opened up, dragging everyone down into it, and most puzzling of all, Dad"s painting. Not only unlike anything Daniel had ever seen before, its qualities deeply disturbed him. Why would Dad leave it behind, if he had gone to Munich to discuss exhibiting his work? Dad"s fabulous seascapes of Cornwall had graced postcards, tourist literature, huge posters distributed right across the region. Well known and respected though he was, an artist had to keep working.
