Phoenix and I went to the Rutberg Regional Hospital to pay a visit to John Keaton on Monday. He was still in the ICU, but we had heard from his wife that he had regained consciousness. Before we went to the elevator, Phoenix popped into the gift shop and bought a potted plant with a “Get Well Soon” mylar balloon attached.
On the second floor, we exited the elevator and followed the signs to the ICU waiting room, where a bored-looking young secretary sat twiddling a pencil, watching video on her phone. She looked up as we approached, and straightened immediately. She tugged on her scrub top and patted her hair. “Hello! How can I help you?” she spoke to me, but her eyes were glued to Phoenix.
“We are here to see John Keaton in room seven.”
