Chapter Five
{Parris' POV}
I anxiously tap my fingers against the table while waiting rather impatiently for them to come. They should be here already.
After I told them to go to Emma’s restaurant, I quickly drove to come here thinking that Emma was here. But I was clearly wrong. Where is that woman? To what I know, she never leaves her restaurant unless something happens.
Emma Weisz is one of my best friend, and also a member of the F.U.C.K G.I.R.L.S. She is half American, half Hungarian and also the owner of Klára Kiss. Cafe and restaurants that have branches around the world. So, yes, she's rich. Very rich. I've known her since forever. We have been best of friends since kindergarten, all of us. But I got separated from them when I left our mansion because of my father who did nothing but take control of my life. After that, I lived in a secret place so that he could not find me.
You see, my father is not your typical type of a father. He is dangerous and I am sure that if I did not hide from him then he would have found me. My father is Lucian Gretú, an Italian Don and Mafia Boss. So in short, I’m his only heir and I know he won’t stop until he finds me.
"What's new? Are you finally in love?" Oh, how I missed that voice. Please note my sarcasm.
"Stop it. I won't call you here if it's not important. And what are you saying? Me? In love? Oh, piss off." She just rolled her eyes with a small smile and sat across from me.
Katia Adrianova. She is half Russian and half American. Pitch black straight long hair. Dark eyes. Slightly taller than my 5.7 height. Tanned skin and has an athlete body. Always hot-headed and the tough one. She's an underground fighter but I was the only one who knew about that in our group. She is still looking for the courage to say that to our friends. She also worked as a secretary in a famous and large company. Maxwell enterprises. It's not very obvious, right?
"Where are they?" I asked. She shrugged her shoulders.
"They are too slow. Amaya is still getting her makeup done so I'm the first one to come here. I swear I'm so close to killing that woman." I can't help but laugh.
"Let her be. You know her. She would never go out without putting any makeup on."
"And that's not funny." She deadpan. "Anyway, how's your new home. Is that witch giving you a hard time?" I rolled my eyes and sigh.
"Katia, Kath isn't a witch and another thing, she's kind. Why don't you like her?" I asked.
Since the first time they saw each other, Katia really didn't like Katheryn for some unknown reason. The tension is on everytime that two are in the same place. I tried to fix their relationship but, let’s just say that it didn’t end so good. It was terrible.
"Don't ask. I just don't like that woman's aura. Something is off about her. So Parris, don't trust her too much. You might just get hurt eventually if you keep trusting her."
"You don't even know her yet. Give her a chance, Katia and maybe we'll know, you'll get along." She scoffed and shook her head, looking very unimpressed.
"Don't expect it to happen, Parris. That would never happen. It's just like you, afraid of trying to be in a relationship again. You even said it yourself, that would never happen so it's the same as me."
"But that's different. It's very different. And how did my fear of getting into a relationship enter the story? We're talking about you and Kath. I just want you to like her, or at least give her a chance."
She sighs.
"I understand you, Parris. But you can't force me to like the person I can't stand to be with in the same place. But because I love you, I'll try to give your witch friend a chance."
"Katia!"
"Okay, okay. Chill dude." She said with her arms raised in surrender.
I heaved a sigh. She seems to sense that something is wrong with me so she speaks.
"Hey, you okay? I just noticed that you seem anxious. Something bothering you? Shall I get my shotgun ready? Tell me who to shoot and I'm sure our friends will help me too." That make me laugh. This is what I like about Katia. Even though she is always the hot-headed one in our group, she is also the most loving and most caring person I know. But of course she doesn't want to admit it because it would tarnish her image as a tough woman in our group.
"No need for that. You know I don't want violence."
"Okay, okay, but seriously, what's wrong, Parris?" She asked, sounding genuinely worried and serious. I hesitated. Should I tell her about what happened earlier? Maybe she knows something.
"Uh… Katia… erm… what has been-"
"Hey b ** ches!" What I was about to say was cut short by the sudden shouts of very familiar voices of my friends. I looked in the direction of their voices. I noticed that other people here in the restaurant were also looking at them. Weird stares but they don't seem to care.
"What's up?" Rhian asked after sitting next to me.
Rhiannon Blevins. Welsh American. Surgeon and the CEO of St. Blevins hospital. Long wavy brunette hair. Gray eyes. 5.7 height just like me. Pale skin. She's classy and often serious. She's the most mature one of the group. And she's loaded. I mean, very rich.
I opened my mouth to answer her question but another voice interrupted what I was supposed to say. "I already know why she called us." They all looked at Lena except for Katia who was seriously sipping her coffee and looking deep in thought.
"What is it?" asked Emma, the owner of this restaurant. I raised an eyebrow at her like asking, 'where the hell were you?' She bit her lower lips and shook her head, gesturing that she would tell me later. I rolled my eyes but nodded anyway.
"Parris is about to announce that she finally got a boyfriend!" Lena cheered like a hyper girl that she certainly is. I mentally facepalm myself. They all looked at me to confirm if what Lena said was true.
"No." I said with firmness in my tone. Never. I would definitely never have a boyfriend.
"Nothing new really." Amaya said while Lena sighed in disappointment. "We can't force Parris to have a boyfriend after what happened -"
"Amaya!" They shouted. I quickly look away. They reminded it to me again. I don't even want to remember it but why is she so annoying? This is really annoying Amaya. I thought.
She's always so talkative and her mouth has no filter
"You know that Parris hates talking about that." Sia scolded with her arms crossed and eyes narrowed. My lips twitched into a small smile. Sia can really be a b ** ch sometimes even with her own friends despite being a federal agent.
I sigh.
"Guys, it's okay. You have to stop so it doesn't end up in a fight." I told them. But that 's impossible, no matter what happens we never fight.
"What exactly is the reason you called us here?" Rhian asked. They are all sitting properly and looking at me curiously.
Honestly, I felt anxious and nervous because even if I don't want to admit it, I'm scared. What if Theo, Kyle and even Clarice said was true? What if I'm the Parris they know? What will I do?
"Uhm, won't you order first? Aren't you guys hungry?" I suggest nervously. They all look at me with the most unimpressed expression.
"Just tell us, Parris. Don't procrastinate. I'm dying of curiosity here." Amaya said while blowing her new polished nails.
"Yes, tell us." Lena added.
"Okay okay." I took a long breath. "Uh…" I looked at Katia who was looking at me very seriously. Darn, I felt suffocated and nauseous. My palms were sweating and my heart was beating so fast. "Have I ever been married before?" I said quickly, then looked at them feeling unsure.
Their expression is priceless. I might have laugh at them if I weren't feeling like s**t.
"What?"
"I mean, was I married before?" I asked again.
"Are you kidding, Parris?" Rhian was the first to recover from the shock. I furrow my eyebrows and raised an eyebrow at her questioningly. "Um, no? I'm totally and entirely being serious here. There's no trace of nonsense." I replied.
Katia steps in. "Well, it looks like you're not being serious. Where did that question come from? You haven't been in any relationship and you're asking if you've been married? Are you feeling alright?" They all nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, Katia is right, Parris. I think you're over working. Are you still eating well?" Emma asked, looking worried.
"That's what I told you. You forget to rest so there's so many things going through there in your mind." Rhian said but it's more like a scold.
"Guys, guys!" I said in irrigation. "I'm fine. I'm not over working myself nor insane! I'm being serious here." I hissed.
"You're really serious?"
"Yes. I am. I won't call you if it's not important." They all fell silent while secretly giving each other glances. I rolled my eyes. Why don't they believe? Is it really that hard to believe what I'm saying?
"Okay, go ahead and tell us first what happened and why you're thinking like that." Amaya asked calmly. Although Amaya is a fashionista and sometimes annoying as hell, she also knows how to be serious about things. She wouldn't be our friend if she's all about beauty. In fact, Amaya is smart and hardworking. It's just not obvious.
"2 am last night when someone called me. He's asking for my help. Then, after knowing the case I went to the house or more like a mansion that I found out was just my neighbor. Then, the unexpected happened. There's this guy, he told me that I'm his wife and he even called me Parris. " They gasp in shock. "But of course, I didn't believe what he said." I left the part where he hugged me because that's too embarrassing. "But then, another man came. He also called me Parris. It was as if he really saw a ghost. They were both shocked to see me. I soon realized the reason why. It's because I look like his wife that has been dead for a long time. " I gulped and forced myself to stay strong.
They looked shocked and also looked like they couldn't believe what I said. But if they are surprised, that means they don't know what I'm saying. So there is still no certainty if what Theo is saying is true, but he can also be telling the truth.
I groaned.
My brain is in a total mess. I'm so confused. I don't know what to believe anymore.
"Don't believe those men, Parris. I've known a lot of people that had been fooled because of that as well. I think you're smart enough to know that it isn't enough that you look like the woman they're referring to, it doesn't mean that it's you." Amaya reminded me.
"Yes, I know. That's why I'm asking you guys about my life back then. I've been in a coma for five months and the doctor said that I might forget other things that happened in my life."
"Yes, but aren't you the one who told us that you haven't forgotten anything? We've asked you so many times but you only have one answer. And that's you remember everything. So we're not worried about that part." Rhian said.
I stayed quiet because I had no answer to that.
My mind is in haywire. After the accident five years earlier, I lived as if nothing had happened. I tried to forget that I had been in a coma for five months. I just woke up and my friends were already there. They told me that the car I was driving in crashed. I thought it was just the accident that I can't remember. But what if I forgot the most important part of my life? What if the memory I lost was even bigger than I thought?
"But what if the man is telling the truth? What if you're really his wife? And he just thought you were dead?" Sia spoke thoughtfully. Amaya looked at her incredulously.
"Sia? You're a federal agent. You're the one who should know the most that you shouldn't trust that kind of person."
"Yes, but the man may be right. I know it's bad to easily believe but guys, Parris has been separated from us for a long time and we don't know what happened in her life." Sia argues.
"But shouldn't Parris tell us if she's married or getting married? Shouldn't we know that?" Rhian once again stepped in.
Emma, Lena and Katia stayed quiet. I know the two didn't want to participate in the debates but Katia, she was the one who would just keep quiet and consider each other's suggestions. Rhian, Sia and Amaya were the lawyers who debated and she's like the judge in court.
I felt disappointed with myself. I'm the undefeated lawyer here and I should be the one who thinks about the specialties but now, I seem to be the vulnerable victim. I clench my fist under the table. This can not be. I can't just sit here. I have to do something. I need to know the truth. But what? What will I do?
"Oh shoot!" Our attention turned to Katia who hurriedly stood up. Then, she look at us. "I need to leave. My break time is over." She made a move to step forward when Emma asked her.
"Wait, I thought you didn't have a job today?" I thought so too.
"My boss needs me. All right, I'm leaving. I don't want to be late, you don't want to see his angry face." Then she took off in a rush. I furrow my eyebrows.
I forgot to ask who her boss is. I know she works at Maxwell enterprises but I don't know the chairman and CEO of that company. I tried to search on the internet but I couldn't find even a single picture. The only thing listed is Mr. Maxwell and nothing more. I don’t know why I’m curious to know. It's just, there's something nagging me to know who is her boss.
"Hey Parris, are you okay?" Lena asked softly. I smile and nodded.
"Yeah. I think we should finish eating our food then let's go to the F.G's SECRET CLUBHOUSE." I suggested.
"Yes!" Emma and Lena said in unison. Other people who were eating looked at them as well. They smiled and murmured an apology. I chuckle then look at Rhian, Sia and Amaya.
"What do you think guys? Aren't you busy?"
"I was busy earlier but I missed our secret club house so yes, I'm in." Amanda said with a wide smile.
Sia and Rhian just shrugged. It's their way of saying 'why not?'
I laughed as I watched Emma and Lena cheer happily. It seems like everyone has been tense for a while and now it's back to normal. But deep down, I can feel the sadness, the longing for something that's still unknown for me. And lastly, the desperation to know the truth. I will make sure to know the truth. And I'm hoping that my lost memories will be recovered soon so that my head won't hurt anymore because of too many questions.
And if I wanted to know the truth, I had to go back to the mansion where Bruce lived to talk to Theo. I need to talk to him. I just hope that my feelings won't affect me.
