04 - Chapter Four
I woke up at six o'clock with my head aching. I groaned. I tried to get up but I immediately fell down.
Here we go again with my hangover.
Wyatt took me home last night. I left my car in Alouette's, I tried to fix myself when mom enters my room. She has this weird smile.
"You're awake," she said, obviously.
What's with her?
"What do you need, mama?" I asked while yawning.
"Cover your mouth, Cean," I chuckled when she frowned.
I sat properly and stared at her. She's standing in front of me, she's grinning like an i***t.
"He's already there, prepare now. Don't make him wait," she uttered and kissed my forehead before leaving.
Wyatt's here?
It's still early. I shrugged and took a quick bath, I finished fixing myself within an hour.
I went down to the kitchen, we have the same set-up as yesterday.
I glance at Wyatt, he's eating quietly. We had a peaceful breakfast, we just left after we ate.
I followed Wyatt in his car without saying anything. It was an awkward silence but I didn't bother saying.
After what happened last night, we became more quiet than usual.
I sit on the front seat and open the radio, it was a smooth drive. I just hum the song on the radio while he's busy driving.
I pouted as I listen to the lyrics of the song, it's a song by Westlife. All or nothing.
But how I can fight someone who isn't even there,
I've had the rest of you now I want the best of you
I don't care if that's not fair
Cause I want it all, or nothing at all
That was my favorite part, it was a selfless love for me.
That's my favorite part, I was hooked up with this song before. I listen and look outside the window.
There's nowhere left to fall
When you reach the bottom it's now or never
Is it all or are we just friends
I smiled. I don't like risking a friendship, but I'm still thankful that Ebony and I ended well.
Is this how it ends
With a simple telephone call
You leave me here with
Nothing at all
I was so afraid to start a relationship with Ebony before cause he's like my best friend, I don't want to lose him but in the end, we're both practical and optimistic.
Before I was afraid to start a relationship with Bon, he's like my best of friends. I don't want to lose everything that we had just for this shallow love.
I smiled, we're good now. Bon and I are both practical and optimistic, we do understand that we have to separate ways.
Wyatt stops the car, we're here in the school.
"Thank you," I said, I head outside without waiting for his response.
I'm heading inside the room when I received a text from him.
From: Wyatt
I'm sorry for what happened last night. It won't happen again.
I link my lips, I actually regret what happened last night. It made us awkward with each other, it shouldn't be like that.
I divert my attention to our lesson, the exam is coming. I had to study hard, I'm not allowed to fail.
After the class was dismissed. I went home, mom texted me that our family dinner starts at six in the afternoon.
I'm busy fixing my dress when someone enters my room.
"Mom? Can you help me? I couldn't zip my dress!" I shouted. I'm here in the closet.
Minutes passed but no one came, I sneak out into my room to see her.
"Mom-" it's Wyatt...
He's lying on my couch, his eyes were closed. Is he asleep?
I sighed and went back to my closet. I really need help, I would just call mama later.
I walked outside the closet and sat in front of my vanity mirror, I had to put on some make-up.
Should I wear dark make-up? I think it would suit my outfit, I'm wearing a zip-back off-shoulder, a ruffle hem-fitted dress.
I chose the brown shade for my eye shadow and put little glitters. As my usual lipstick, I apply red and curled my eyelashes before putting a mascara.
I drew a perfect winged eyeliner to my eyes, after that, I fix my hair.
My angelic face is gone, it was cover by sophistication and a classy one.
I wore two-inch heels, Aunt Julie doesn't want some rubber or flat shoes.
I'm possessing a fierce-looking woman, I hate it.
I was staring at myself for how long when I noticed Wyatt's eyes on the mirror. He's wide awake and watching me.
"They asked you to come here?" I asked.
He nods in me, I know he won't say anything so I just shrugged.
I became conscious when he didn't remove his gaze from me.
I furrowed my brow, "Is there something wrong?"
I may hate the way I look right now but I know that I am beautiful, didn't he like it?
I watched him stood up and walked towards me, he has this blank expression.
"What are you doing?" I look at him in confusion, he stops behind me so I'm tilted my head to look at him.
"Stand up," he commanded. I look away as his voice affects me.
"Why?"
His eyes became darker, he clenched his jaw. "I'll zip your dress,"
I felt his hand on my bare back, I immediately stood up.
The heat of his hand makes me want to shudder, his touch sent electricity to my body.
I stay still as I wait for him to finish, I glanced at my air-con. It's on, right? I felt hot.
He took a step back after he zipped my dress, I gave him a small smile.
"Thanks," I whispered, just enough for him to hear it.
I was able to scrutinize him as he stands at my back, he looks sexy with his black button-down shirt and black slacks with his belt on.
My eyes dropped on his broad chest, with the three buttons open I was able to see it. It's a free sight.
I look away and simply bit my lips, he's mocking hot!
I turn to the mirror to check myself out, my dress hugged my body. I am wearing heels but Wyatt's still towering over me.
Turning on my side, there's a big mirror, showing our proportion. It emphasizes our height difference.
Wyatt went back on the couch, avoiding my eyes. I felt like he didn't like my mien right now.
I shrugged, he's opinion should not influence my mood. It doesn't matter.
"I'm done," I said.
His deep intense eyes met mine, he didn't say anything and stood up.
If before he rarely talks, now, he doesn't really talk to me. He couldn't even stare at me for a second. It's because of what happened last night, I blame myself for that.
I let him leave my room before going down, I calm myself first. I am preparing myself for future humiliation.
I sat down beside Crescent. She's wearing a susana monaco hannah dress, she looks so engrossing to look at.
Everyone is here except Kuya Daryl and our grandparents. Daryl had to fix his papers while our grandparents are staying in London.
"Good afternoon," I uttered and kissed their cheeks.
Wyatt is sitting in front of me, beside him is Zenos, who's looking dashing in his clean hair-cut. He's wearing a white button-up shirt, in contrast to the color of his brother.
I could say they are very different from each other, Zenos' always the chill guy while Wyatt has this poker face, he's always serious.
My eyes went down to Zenos' chest, like his brother, his three buttons are also open. He has a muscular built, I shook my head.
I look at the person in front of me as I felt someone kicked my feet under the table.
I'm sure it's not Zenos because he's busy talking to Crescent, I look at Wyatt, he's looking at me flatly, I'm sure that's not him. My gaze turns to Demetra, my cousin, she's sitting on the right side of Wyatt.
She smirks at me, I raised my brow at her.
"What?" I asked, she shrugged at me and chuckled.
"What, what?" she uttered.
"You kicked me," I accused her.
She pursed her lips and laughed. I rolled my eyes on her and look back at Zenos.
I frowned as I felt her kicked me, again. What's wrong with her!
I look at her with frustration but she's busy talking to her sister, Dysthe. This girl.
Our dinner started when Uncle Jonathan came, they start talking about businesses and politics, while us, my cousin, are just silently eating and listening to them.
I'm in the middle of savoring and chewing my food when Aunt Jules called me. I closed my eyes tightly, here we go with the evaluation.
Her sharp eyes make me want to run back into my room.
"Yes, Aunt?" I asked nicely.
"How's your school?" she asked, her lips protruded as she arched her eyebrow to me.
I swallowed hard, hiding my nervousness, she's damn scary!
"I'm doing good, Aunt," I uttered.
"Just good, Oceanna? What about extracurricular, do you have one?" her voice sounded disappointed.
"Nope, Aunt Jules. I'm trying to focus on my studies,"
"Your cousins and sister are doing excellent in academics with their extracurricular activities," she said as a matter of fact.
"I'm planning to join in modeling-"
"Not that, Oceanna!" I jumped in my chair in her sudden voice.
As expected, they don't want any types of profession that involve media.
"Don't you have any talent than that, huh," I look down as I get anxious, I don't like where this coming from?
"I'm sorry, Aunt," the only word that I could say was that.
"What's happening to your daughter, Rich," Aunt Jules asked dad in distress, I wanted to roll my eyes but I don't have the courage.
It should be what's wrong with them, not me.
Dad looks at me before turning to Aunt Jules, "I'll talk to her about that, ate," he said plainly.
I don't know how many times I've disappointed my parents, but they'll never stand up for me.
"You kept on disappointing us, Oceanna," Aunt Jules muttered.
"I'm sorry,"
I'm not sure what more to say. They'll never let me do it because they'll never grasp what I'm talking about. It's always their standpoint that counts.
"I want to join modeling, too," Crescent stated, she glanced at Aunt Jules.
She drops her utensils and shook her head, "I would be joining in modeling," she repeated, firmly.
Crescent's boldness can make me passed out, her audacity is insane. Everyone at the table looks at her but she managed to smile at them.
"Crescent-"
"There's nothing wrong in that kind of pageantry, Uncle Jonathan. I also found out that..." she stops and took a peek at Aunt Jules whose looking at her with unknown emotion, "Aunt Jules joined modeling before when she was at our age." my eyes rounded at what she said.
What? Is that true? But she hated it so much, she loathed it.
Crescent's fierce eyes met Aunt Jules' menacing eyes, they stared at each other, like their eyes are enough for the conversation that should be... told.
"Ija, that was before. And that's the point, she had experiences in that field, so it means she knows better than both of you. She quit for a reason," Uncle said, convincing Crescent.
"And what's her reason?"
"She knew that it won't take her anywhere, it's useless,"
Crescent chuckled sarcastically as if she heard something ridiculous.
"Crescent, stop," dad clenched his jaw, I hope Crescent is in her right mind. She's crazy!
"You and grandpa put an end to her career, Uncle. She didn't quit, you terminated her dream." her voice is attested with bravery.
Uncle Jonathan's eyes sharpened as he looks at her, he didn't like it. He doesn't like the way she talked back, it's written on his face.
"You're crossing the line, Crescent!" his voice echoed in the room.
Damn it.
"You're not in the right position to say that, Crescent," Kuya Cheros shook his head and looks at her with dismay.
"Is there anyone who should be in my place? Who is it, Kuya?"
Kuya Cheros clenched his jaw, "That's it. No one should be able to stand in your place, Crescent. You've crossed the line this time,"
Crescent scoffed, "No one's crossing the line, Kuya. I know when to stop. I know where to stand, fighting for things we want doesn't evacuate respect, it just approaches the viewpoint of others,"
"We are taught to respect others, Crescent. Your stand doesn't matter if you'll forget the means of manners," Dysthe muttered, Demetra's twin sister.
"I guess you lacked comprehension, Dysthe. I didn't respect anyone. If telling the truth was considered disrespectful then lies will be contemplated as the standard. Think about it," Crescent's frame of mind screams Homer.
She has the power to speak, she has the potency to fight. She had everyone's intellect, her surveillance was excessive.
"If your stand of point will be the reason for your unpleasant persona then we don't have a choice but to get in your away," Kuya Nathan uttered darkly.
I held Crescent's arm, stopping her. I'm scared, no, I'm afraid of the repercussion of this conversation, I need to stop it.
She glanced at me before removing my hands from her, she looks at them again.
"Trying to repeat the history, Kuya Nathan?" she asked.
"Crescent, you're being too much!" Aunt Cheryl exclaimed in anger.
"Shut your mouth now, Crescent," dad said, he's mad.
She flickered her tongue on her cheeks, "Do we have to always choose silence to preserve these old-fashioned ethics, dad? I'm so tired of seeing my cousin act like a freaking hypocrite trying to meet the imaginary standard of this family," she stops and looks at them.
"I hope you'll realize that we can maintain the family's reputation as long as we accept the diversity,"
Silence consumed the whole place after that, not until Uncle Jonathan spoke and it made me shivered in despondent.
"You're starting to go against us, Crescent. You left no choice but to send you in France for the second time,"
"Jonathan, not again, please," mommy whispered, she looks at Uncle, begging. Her tears were shed on her beautiful face, I look down as I felt my eyes moisten.
Daddy didn't show any emotion, he looks at her coldly. Crescent looks at dad with her plucky eyes, I couldn't see fear in her eyes, she shrugged and turns to Uncle Jonathan.
"Is that your only way, Uncle? Cause I'm telling you, you can throw me away every time, but my discernment will never change,"
"Crescent, please, stop. I'm begging you," mom uttered to her as she held her arms.
"Then you'll be staying there forever," Kuya Nathan has this stoic expression on his face.
"You're getting hard-headed and mulish, I would love that if we are indifferent scenario, Crescent," Uncle Jonathan sipped a drink before looking at dad.
"She's using her intelligence wisely," Uncle Danielle uttered and stared at Crescent with his proud eyes.
"Don't start, Danielle," Aunt Jules warned him.
Uncle Danielle chuckled, "You're so driven by this image, ate. I can't believe Kuya Jonathan managed to brainwash you, you were smart before,"
Uncle Jonathan dropped his utensils, it boomed on the kitchen.
"She's smart enough to understand that we could be the best than settled from being a loser, Danielle! Don't make her your mini version, such a disappointment!"
I don't like fights, I'm tired of it. And yes, this is our family dinner.
"You're doing the same mistake that dad did to us, Kuya. You're putting our children in the same situation that we had!" Aunt Camille held his husband's arm, Uncle Danielle.
"You have the guts to say that, Danielle? May I remind you that you will be damn useless if dad didn't save your ass before!" Uncle Jonathan was livid. His wrinkles show on his face.
The way he shouted made me shuddered in fear. I know how dangerous he is, everyone knows it.
Aunt Cheryl stood up, "Drop this, we're here to have dinner. Don't act like that in the front of the food," she calmly stated.
Aunt Cheryl is the oldest among them, next is Uncle Jonathan.
My gaze turns to ate Kylie, the eldest child of Aunt Julie. She's smiling at me, a sad one.
I smiled at her, like us, she's still in the prison of her mother's expectation, of this family's expectation.
My eyes went to Jari. She's eating like nothing's happening around her, she doesn't care. She's the youngest daughter of Aunt Jules.
We're the same age while ate Kylie's four years older than us. Jari's aloof with everyone, even with her sister, she rarely talks.
"Maybe it's better if you would settle this out without us," Uncle Kevin uttered, I look at them, this is so embarrassing.
"You would never win an argument with me, Danielle. Stop now," Uncle Jonathan said.
"Just let our children chase their dream-"
"I prefer seeing them successful than being the subject of humiliation, I would never let them settle for less," Uncle Jonathan said in finality.
"Success doesn't validate happiness, you can reach the top and feels nothing, Kuya." I love Uncle Danielle so much, I hated this family, but we have him.
Uncle Jonathan sniggered and look at me with his challenging look, "What do you want to be, Oceanna?" he asked with mockery.
Why does he have to point this out to me?
"I-I wanted to-"
"You wanted to be a singer, right?" he said impatiently.
I hardly nod and look down, he laughed. "See that, Danielle? Where do you think music will take her? We have to awaken her senses, she has to dream high! She deserves a better future,"
"Stop arguing with Kuya Jonathan, Danielle. He's right, music is useless, it's impractical. Our family should remain as the lion's share in this society, we are the calibers," Aunt Jules uttered, emotionless.
Does reaching the top without the satisfaction of gaiety, worth it? We all want freedom, felicity. Support that my family can't give.
"Why can't we try to let, Cean, and see if she'll be successful or not?" Kuya Dunixi muttered, my eyes widened at him.
He's the first-born of Uncle Danielle, he's two years older than me. We're not close but he's like his brother, he's nice and supportive.
"And if she fails? She'll drag our family to that," Kuya Nathan replied.
The eldest son of Uncle Jonathan. His eyes went to me, it's cold and full of disappointment.
"Why do you have to be negative, Nathan? You have to give her a chance to risk it-"
"If you'll let her then she'll be a stain that will forever mark our family, Kuya Nixi. That's a loss of face on us," Dysthe insisted, she looks at me in irritation.
I hate how she said that, her lips must be so spicy to be this savage. A bad savage.
I believed that every skill, talent, and passion is worth it. It should have no less or more, everything is worth the risk, they should stop looking down on those people who chose the least in that damn option.
"Dysthe, don't meddle with them," Demetra whispered at her sister.
Dysthe rolled her eyes, "Come on, Dem. I want her to realize that pushing what she wants is selfish, she'll put our family in a huge ignominy!" she exclaimed.
Demetra and Dysthe are Uncle Jonathan's daughters. I'm one year older than them.
Aunt Danica was quiet, she's just watching us, unlike her daughter, Dem, and Dys.
"Do you understand, Oceanna? or you'll be stubborn?" Dysthe raised her brow to me.
I felt a big lump in my throat, it's arduous to say something and defend myself because in the end... I'll be the one on edge of the shaky argument.
"Dysthe," Aunt Danica called her, signaling her to stop.
"No, mom. I want her to use her brain-"
"You act like you are smart enough to use your brain, Dysthe. I couldn't help but laugh," Crescent eyes are shooting daggers, looking at Dysthe.
"You are insulting my sister as if you already prove something, how much confidence do you have right now before I ruin it?" Crescent snickered at her while clenching her jaw.
Dysthe furrowed her brow, "You could never ruin it, Crescent. And please, at least I am thinking wiser than she is-"
"Stop bad-mouthing my sister, Dysthe," I saw Crescent closed her fist under the table.
"Dysthe, stop. Calm down, Crescent. She doesn't mean to say that." Aunt Jules, trying to defend Dysthe.
"Truth hurts, right?" Dysthe said mockingly.
Crescent chortled in sarcasm, "A person who cheats on her exam has the guts to humiliate someone, wow, aren't you the one that should be ashamed?" she smirked at Dysthe and glanced at Uncle Jonathan whose now staring darkly at her daughter.
"What would be the reaction of people if they found out that, 'the great daughter of Jonathan Homer is a cheater', I'll pity those clients that will have you as their lawyer, Dysthe."
I saw Dysthe eyes widened, she was caught off-guard. I could see fear in her eyes even if she tries to hide it.
"What did you just say, Crescent?" Aunt Cheryl asked, her face looks at Dysthe with disgust.
"Are you accusing my daughter, Crescent? Are you saying that my daughter is a cheater!" Aunt Danica raised her voice.
"Accused is not the word when it was proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, right? Alleged until proven guilty and I already proved it, with substantial evidence,"
Crescent chewed her food while looking at Dysthe.
"I don't k-know what you're talking about," Dys replied, her lips were trembling.
"You're not a good liar, I guess my sister could help you with that?"
I pursed my lips, damn, Crescent!
I turn to Wyatt and his family, they just witnessed how messed up our family is, do they still want to continue the engagement? I hope no.
I watched them, Wyatt's looking at his plate boredly while Zenos is biting his lips, trying to hide his smile while looking at Crescent. This guy is whipped!
Uncle Kevin and his wife were just listening to us, they should realize that they are committing a big mistake if they still pursue the damn engagement.
"How could you do this to me, Crescent!" she shouted in rage.
"So you really cheated, Dysthe Jacinda!" Uncle Jonathan's voice roared in the room.
Dysthe stood up and look at her father while crying, "Dad, I didn't. I just-"
"You've disappointed me, big time," Uncle said with unexplainable emotion in his eyes.
"No one should know about this, Kuya," Aunt Jules said in horror, what the hell.
"I'll cover this up, we'll talk in the house, Dysthe," Uncle uttered, I can't imagine what will happen.
Dysthe stifled her sob and glared at Crescent.
"Do you feel happy?" she asked Crescent who nods at her with a smirk on her face.
"I chose my battle wisely, Dysthe. I made sure that I would win in the battle that I picked to, I could fight fair but also play dirty. I am Homer, after all, we don't play just," Crescent stood up and excused herself, she left with a wicked smile on her face.
Dysthe was so frustrated, Demetra calmed her down.
"You raised a lioness, now, she eating all of you," Zenos chuckled as he watched her go upstairs.
"Zenos," Uncle Kevin warned, Zenos smiled and shrugged.
Everyone was quiet, they changed the topic afterward. I could still feel the tension that happened a while ago, I saw how Uncle Jonathan glared at his daughter, he's upset. His eyes held so much repugnance.
Dysthe didn't say anything and eat, our cousin, was silently eating too while the elders continue talking about businesses and politics as if nothing happened.
"Everything's fine, especially the investment in Pallas Company. The sales are doing good," Uncle Kevin said, he has this evil smirked.
Pallas?
I was thinking where did I hear that surname when I received a text.
From: Wyatt
I want to rest, can I take a nap in your room?
My lips parted, I look up and caught him staring at me. He looks tired, I pouted.
To: Wyatt
You could excuse yourself and go to my room.
I saw him look at his phone, his forehead wrinkled as he typed.
I turn to my phone, there are two texts from here.
From: Wyatt
Is that okay?
From: Wyatt
That would look suspicious to just go in your room alone.
I bit my inside cheeks as I stop myself from laughing at his text, I can imagine him being sneaky.
To: Wyatt
It would more suspicious if we both excuse ourselves and go to my room.
I could feel his stare at me, his lips protruded a bit as he read my text. I could see the frustration in his eyes as he looks at me.
I look at mommy when she spoke, "They tried to sabotage our company, before," she said while looking at Uncle Kevin.
Are they still talking about Pallas?
"I know about that, Lara. You don't have to worry, I'm just using them. They're failing," Aunt Zeinab uttered, her keen eyes glint in the light.
Mommy smiled, "I heard that, that just serves them right,"
I look at my phone when it vibrates, one message from Wyatt.
From: Wyatt
Okay.
It took him a minute to reply, 'okay'. Wow.
To: Wyatt
Just go and get a rest in the guestroom.
I sat properly and look at my surroundings, everyone is busy, maybe I could guide him to our guestroom.
I messaged him again.
To: Wyatt
Do you think they will notice if we leave right now?
I stared at him while waiting for his reply, my eyes went to Zenos when I saw him staring at his brother's phone.
I wanted to tell him to look away, it's private!
Wyatt glanced at us brother, he shook his head.
"Don't be nosy," Wyatt uttered, Zenos smirked at him and then turn at me.
His eyes look so malicious, "It's not what you're thinking about," I whispered at him in advance.
He chuckled, "Okay,"
I had a little chit-chat with his engagement when his attention turns to the elders. They were still talking about Pallas company, I think?
"Why are you staying with them if you knew that it's failing then?" Uncle Jonathan asked, looking at Uncle Kevin.
"I'll buy all the share until they got nothing," Uncle Kevin sniggered, it looks devishly.
Uncle Jonathan laughed, "You already plan this ahead, Kevin," he muttered as his eyes support amusement.
But... what? Is that true that Pallas' family are sinking in the ground now?
My gaze accidentally passed by Zenos, his eyes sharpened as he listens to them.
"I heard that their only heir almost fail the exam," Aunt Jules uttered in fun.
"She's helping her mother to save their company, that must affect her studies," Aunt Danica stated, she looks worried.
Aunt Jules rolled her eyes, "Crescent and Nathan were able to help their fathers in the company while nailing to be a dean-lister. We just have to admit that Pallas' are solely loser, Danica,"
"It's different. They have a lot to fix, Julie." Aunt Cheryl butt in.
"What's the difference, ate? Besides, Pallas is a traitor. They've been messing with us for a long time, it's time to pull them out,"
Almost everyone in elders agreed, they are ready to extract those who will compete with us.
"Julie is right, ate, we should get rid of them for good. I don't like competitors," Uncle Jonathan smiled wickedly.
"By the way, is there progress in Damon Amara's case?" Uncle Brix asked, husband of Aunt Cheryl.
I pursed my lips as they easily changed the topic, I know where's the coming now.
"I heard the Joepher Xakousti will be Bronze's lawyer, this is going to be fun," Uncle Jonathan uttered in excitement.
I look at dad, he's so quiet.
"I and Rich have decided to create a new agreement," Uncle Kevin said, he looks at Wyatt and me.
Is this real?
Wyatt didn't react at all, he just stares at his father flatly. I felt so nervous about this, I hope they wouldn't announce it now in front of everyone.
I don't have the spirit to decline in front of them, please, not now.
"What is it?" Aunt Jules asked curiously.
"Since Zenos and Crescent engagement is off, we would like to pair my youngest son, Wyatt, and Oceanna in a new engagement," Uncle Kevin looks at dad, "This will just happen if Rich will lose the case, but if he won, then nothing will ensue,"
Everyone at the table looks at me and Wyatt, I look down. We didn't say anything, I was anxious.
"I don't think that's a good idea. After the cancellation of Crescent's engagement, it's not good to set another one, " Kuya Cheros said, he's five years older than me. The firstborn in our generation, the first barbarous third-gen Homer.
"It would lead to proceeding publication of our name," Kuya Nathan added.
I nod my head to agree, please, I don't even know how to cope up in this damn situation.
"What's your opinion about it, Wyatt?" Uncle Jonathan asked, staring at Wyatt whose looking at them blankly.
"What do you want to hear?"
Uncle laughed inwardly, "You had the brutishness of your father, Wyatt," he shook his head, "I would like to hear your outlook,"
"Marriage is a prominent vain," he uttered.
