After entering the banquet, Alanna saw a place full of lights, drinks and beautiful women. They were different from the rest of the world, they had a delicate and sculpted figure.
They all looked like goddesses, models and Hollywood actresses. It was an oasis for any man, yet Alanna only felt like a small hindrance.
She felt overshadowed by them, and decided to leave the hall for the garden. As she passed through a hallway, Alanna stopped for a moment and looked through the door to an old trunk.
There stood Lucas, leaning his back against the log, with Camille facing him. She had her face down, and Lucas' arms were wrapped around her body.
—Camille, what time is it? You look more beautiful than usual— he asked from in front of her.
—Honey, it's 9 o'clock at night— she answered calmly.
—You're wrong, it's time to make you the happiest woman in the world. I love you so much Camille!— said Lucas with a seductive whisper.
After those words, Camille looked up and rested her lips on Lucas'.
When Alanna heard that, she scoffed at them. He used to say those same words to Alanna. Even Lucas used to use even more romantic and honeyed phrases.
It was obvious that Lucas knew no originality. He was emptier than he had ever seemed to be.
Now, hearing Lucas say those same absurd and insignificant words, she felt nothing but revulsion for it.
She wanted to get out of there quickly, but, when she turned around Camille looked up and turned towards the door.
—Oh, but look who's here! My friend Alanna!— shouted Camille.
Camille parted Lucas' lips, and grabbed his hand to walk towards the door where Alanna stood proudly.
—Wow, you're dressed up tonight. Are you looking for a boyfriend here? Too bad you're just a hobby for men— Camille hinted.
Alanna took a step forward and wanted to respond, however, before she spoke, Camille opened her mouth arrogantly again.
—... You are so ordinary. Maybe I can recommend you to an old man who is now a widower, maybe he will pay attention to you— mocked Camille again.
—Camille, I leave you with Lucas, maybe he'll cheat you and take all your money, like he did with me— said Alanna mockingly.
—You cheated on me, that's why I broke off our relationship. Besides, I didn't steal anything, I earned that money with my work. Stop lying!— said Lucas immediately.
—You should tell the truth once in your life!— added Alanna angrily.
—The truth? The truth is that Camille and I love each other. We fell in love after your affair. I would never betray the love of my life— Lucas said sardonically.
Things in Alanna's family were more complicated than usual. When Alanna's mother died, her father fell in love with Lucas' mother, so he never accepted the relationship between Lucas and his daughter.
From the beginning, Alanna had been just an easy way for Lucas to find the upper class and fortune of Alanna's parents.
Now, with Alanna's expulsion from the Summer family, Lucas would be the sole heir to her father's fortune. After all, his mother would not leave him with nothing.
—Did I cheat on you first? You know better than that. Don't be shameless. I'm sick of your lie!— Alanna shouted aloud.
—Alanna!— shouted Lucas loudly.
He was furious, he even raised his hand to slap Alanna, however, Camille stopped him and sighed.
—Honey, don't grovel before her. She's envious. Everyone already knows she's a b***h who cheated on you. Besides, I'm the spoiled child of the Smith family, you'll soon join my family when we get married. So calm down! Let's not ruin my brother Nick's party— Camille added cheekily.
—Your brother?— Alanna was surprised to hear that.
Nick was Camille's brother? It was absurd. Camille was Smith, but she wasn't from the Smith family. She and Camille were supposed to have met in college.
Camille had said she was an orphan, what the hell did that mean?
Camille immediately lifted her face proudly and looked at Alanna with disdain. —Yes, Nick is my brother. I'm the youngest daughter of the Smith family. and tonight my brother is going to introduce himself to everyone. I'm sorry to tell you that you don't come up to my ankles— Camille added mockingly.
Alanna heard that and was really surprised, he didn't expect it. However, she wasn't really surprised that Camille had been lying to her since they met.
—You're from the Smith family? So, should I call you sister-in-law? Now I am your brother Nick's wife. I'm the wife of the star of this party. Am i supposed to call you sister-in-law now?— hinted Alanna proudly as she lifted her chin and looked over her shoulders.
Hearing those words Camille felt frustrated but she wasn't angry, she just smiled sarcastically while pointing at Alanna mockingly.
—That's the craziest joke I've ever heard. My brother's wife? You're delusional. Alanna, you shouldn't stoop to such lies. Nick doesn't even have a girlfriend. He's choosing a wife today, and I know perfectly well that nobody would notice you. You're crazy!—
Alanna chuckled and opened her purse to take out the marriage certificate. She waved the document mockingly in front of Camille's face.
—Do you know how to read? Look, we're married! Now address me with respect, sister-in-law—.
After that, Alanna smirked, put the document away and walked out. Camille froze for a few moments. she had gone into a kind of trance.
— You're a liar! That's false! How low you've sunk, you ungrateful b***h!— Camille screamed loudly behind Alanna's back.
Alanna heard that scream and didn't even look back, she just kept walking. When Alanna reached the hallway again, her body went limp, she was circling those two.
She stopped for a moment and leaned gently against a column. Her blood was boiling and her hands were shaking with helplessness.
But, now, what was he going to do? This certificate was a fake. She didn't even know who Nick was. What would happen now?
Camille and Lucas would definitely laugh at her when they found out the truth, probably now Alanna would have to go into hiding. That would not be good for her.
That same night Nick was going to choose a wife. Alanna had been with Lucas for years, and they had been engaged, but now she had nothing. Alanna couldn't compete with anyone.
With a heavy sigh Alanna thought better of it, it was clear that from now on she had to change her aura and achieve a greater purpose.
Alanna fixed her hair and went back to the banquet. She was about to go to the Summer family table, but Camille passed by her and took her hand.
—Come, join us... sister-in-law— Camille said with a cold look on her face.
Camille wanted to see Alanna make a fool of herself, so she wouldn't miss that opportunity. Otherwise, Alanna was liable to run away.
That night almost all the millionaires and upper-class people in town were there. Camille was going to make Alanna the mockery of the banquet!
—Of course, let's go— said Alanna seriously.
For Alanna it was worth it just to sit there. After all, she was from a wealthy family. Besides, just by being next to Camille, she could make eye contact with Nick.
As soon as Alanna took her seat, the whole room went into an uproar and some people started shouting.
—Mr. Smith is finally here!—
—Oh, my God, he's so handsome!—
—If I could marry him, my life would be so wonderful!— the women kept hinting over and over again.
Suddenly, at the entrance to the salon, a tall, lovely-looking man entered against the light, with the profile of a Greek god.
The man wore a dark suit of haute couture. His gaze was cool but charming, and his hair was short and blond - he was the perfect man!
As he entered the hallway, the light shone on him enchantingly. His handsome face appeared in full view of everyone present. It was like a magic mirage.
His attractiveness was different from that of the rest of the men. He looked like a mixture of the most handsome men in the world. No one in that place had ever seen a man with such a perfect physique.
As soon as Alanna saw Nick, his eyes widened even more. He was a thousand times more handsome than Lucas, but Nick possessed a certain familiarity.
It seemed to Alanna that she had seen Nick somewhere before. However, it was impossible. Alanna shook her head inwardly. It was obvious that a man as handsome as Nick would be hard to forget.
Alanna had heard about Nick since she was a little girl. Nick was like a golden boy, the one everyone always gossiped about.
At that moment, while Alanna was lost in thought, Nick's eyes lit up as they locked on her.
She looked up and they met each other's gaze. After a few seconds she averted her gaze in embarrassment.
Alanna's heart was beating fast. she was nervous, strange.... There was a very strong sense of familiarity in him when she saw him.
She quickly turned away and poured herself a glass of water.
