There was a little pause and then Delora asked in a very small voice,
“And how – far away will – I be?”
Conrad took both her hands in his.
“I don’t know, my precious,” he said. “Government House is at St. John’s, several miles away. But there is another house that stands on a hill just above the dockyard.”
He saw Delora’s eyes looking at him intently and he went on,
“It is called Clarence House and it was built in 1787 for Prince William, Duke of Clarence. He lived in Antigua when he commanded The Pegasus.”
“You think I might stay there?”
“It is only an idea I had because somebody told me that the Governor used it as a country house and I think it unlikely that you will move into Government House until you are actually married.”
