Chapter 17 At the State Attorney’s office, I walked up the steps, rather than taking the elevator to the second floor. When I arrived at the reception desk, I mumbled a hello. I didn’t remember her name but she had worked for the office when I started with the Public Defender. “Good morning, Mr. Chandler.” She smiled. “Here to see Elena?’’ “Yes,” I said. She picked up the phone, and dialed. “Jake Chandler here to see Elena,” she spoke to the receiver. When she put the phone down, she smiled. “Please have a seat. She’ll be right out.” The phone lines lit up, and she went back to answering phones. A uniformed deputy sat in one corner. Two men dressed in suits were on the opposite side.
