Love Cameron:
"You don't have to chauffeur me around every day," I mentioned to Darren as we sat in his car. The past week had been the highlight of my life. Since Darren connected with my kids, he revealed a side of himself I hadn't expected. He treated them kindly and even incorporated them into every plan he made with me.
I didn't mind at all because I enjoyed our time together. Today, we had to stay a bit longer at the office, so I was getting home later than usual.
"I enjoy doing everything with you," he whispered, leaning back and resting his head on the chair's backrest, his eyes locked onto mine.
"I'm not pressuring you to make a decision either," he quickly picked up on my unease regarding the idea of us being in a relationship.
"It's just that—I thought you might run for the hills once you learned I have kids," I chuckled at my own thoughts before hastily adding more to my statement, "Darren! I know you enjoy spending time with them, and I can't fathom how you connected with them so quickly. My kids adore you too, but hanging out with someone and taking responsibility for them are two different things. My kids can be a handful, and they have some issues," I murmured, avoiding disclosing their identities yet. I couldn't take that risk. What if he spills the beans to someone else?
Humans were still not ready to accept their own kind, let alone werewolves. Although I had lived here for long enough, it still didn't make me feel entirely safe. These humans were notorious for experimenting and trying to decipher things. Once they caught a werewolf, they wouldn't rest until they conducted all sorts of experiments or uncovered their territory.
"I get where you're coming from. When I was little, my father got caught up in a brawl and was killed trying to shield me and my mother from harm. My life was already chaotic, and losing my dad just made me feel even more vulnerable. I took it upon myself to work hard to be where I am today. Do you think someone who's been through so much at a young age would be afraid of two kids throwing tantrums?" He smiled as he made his point. "Love, kids come with their challenges. There are tough times, but do you think that scares a parent? Why do you think it would scare me? If anything, I'll be there every step of the way to defend and take care of them."
The confidence in his tone and the way he looked at me made me reconsider my decision.
"Still, there are a few things I can't even share with you. I have some secrets, and they're not exactly small ones," I chuckled to myself, contemplating how one reveals to a person that they are werewolves.
"Hmm! Are you secretly a criminal?" he asked, and when I shook my head and smiled, he continued, "There's nothing that can scare me away from you. I'm not even going to pressure you to accept me. I'm just saying, give me a chance. Date me, and I'll show you that I'll go to any lengths to take care of you and those little angels," he whispered sweetly.
I fell silent, contemplating whether I should follow my heart. He seemed perfect. Not only could he mend my heart, but my kids needed a father like him. If things went well, maybe I could eventually reveal our identities to him. And why did I feel like he wouldn't expose our secrets but would be supportive?
"Fine. I'll give it some thought," I had only gotten to that point when he cupped my face and pressed our lips together.
For a fleeting moment, I remained unresponsive, but then I began to succumb to his touch. His lips felt incredibly tender, and I had been yearning for this moment for quite some time. Once I could engage with his lips, I acted impulsively.
I wasn't backing down now. His hands wandered through my hair as our tongues engaged in a playful battle within our mouths. His sturdy hands were so sizable that when they descended to caress my bosom, I broke the kiss and turned my face to the other side, blushing.
"What's the matter? I've only touched them. The day you permit me, I'll lavish attention on them until they turn crimson, and you—" he paused as my phone rang, displaying Nena's name.
Even Darren recognized that this was the moment when I didn't think about anything or anyone else. My complete attention shifted back to my kids.
"Yes?" I answered the call, struggling to steady my rapid breaths, but also anxious about the reason for her call.
"I thought you were just a few minutes away. Actually, I have plans for a date, so I wanted to know when you'll be coming home?" Fortunately, it wasn't one of those calls that would make me anxious.
"I'm already here. You can leave the apartment; I'll meet you outside the building," I replied and hung up the call.
The two of us sat there awkwardly, pondering how we went from me admitting to giving it a thought to unleashing our passionate desires on each other.
"I'll see you tomorrow then," I mumbled awkwardly, stepping out of the car.
"Goodnight, Love!" While I felt embarrassed, he sounded content. I observed him drive away as I slowly approached the building entrance, where Nena was waiting for me.
"Have a great date," I waved at her, watching her leave. For some reason, coming home felt a bit peculiar today; it was as if something was about to unfold.
Perhaps it was because I was overjoyed at giving myself another shot at a fulfilling life, but that couldn't be it. I was more worried than happy.
Then it dawned on me when I heard a howl from across the road. My heart skipped a beat, and I turned around to concentrate on the imposing figure standing in the darkness.
I couldn't even move for a few seconds. The figure appeared broad, facing in my direction. I was sure he was looking at me.
Who was he?
And why did I hear a howl?
As goosebumps began to creep onto my skin, I started to entertain the idea that this person was someone I had known years ago.
"Go away! I'll call the cops," I still clung to the belief that it was some crazy man looking for trouble when he revealed his identity, leaving me in shivers.
"So rude. Is this how you welcome your alpha king mate?" His voice retained the same scary, deep resonance I remembered.
I gulped and took a step back as he moved slightly.
"Alpha King Kage Reaper!" I whispered under my breath, acknowledging what it would mean before I turned to sprint into the building. However, it didn't take long for me to realize that he was chasing after me.
