Chapter 7: An Awkward Moment

2000 Words
Liz Zander pulls me into his arms and pushes us against the wall so that they can’t see me. I peek past him and see Kyle looking this way with a frown and I can also see that Tiffany is wearing another dress. “What’s wrong baby?” Tiffany asked him. “I thought I saw…” he starts saying, but Zander leans down and kisses me. I find myself kissing him back, before I come to my senses and pull away. “What are you doing?” I whisper. “They are watching us, just play along.” He says, and I look up at him and nod. He makes sure his body is shielding me. He leans down again and puts his forehead against mine. I can’t help but close my eyes and savor this moment, because it feels so good. “Never mind, let’s go.” Kyle says. When I don’t hear them anymore, I peek out. “They are gone,” I whisper, and Zander looks down at me. He just stares at me and doesn’t say anything. Are we having a moment? f**k, I really don’t know, but this just feels way too intimate. I move out of his grasp, and he lets me go. He looks around and then back at me. “Their car is gone, it’s safe to go.” He says and leads the way to the car, with me following him in a confused daze. What just happened? Even though I stopped that kiss, it felt really good. What is wrong with me? I can’t be catching feelings for a man who is just trying to help me. He opened the door for me and I got in. He starts the car, but doesn’t say anything about what just happened and neither do I. “Do you think we have enough evidence?” I ask him after a while. “Not yet, but it’s a good start. I will get my people to secure footage of them in the mall. We need evidence of infidelity before he served you with the divorce papers. I will check with his office on which days he wasn’t at work and take it from there. Don’t worry, we will get the proof we need.” Zander says. “Thank you for helping me.” I say and he looks at me and smiles. “What are friends for?” he asks me and I smile, but inside I am chastising myself. He only sees me as a friend. I am reading this whole situation wrong, and I shouldn’t even be thinking of him in that way anyway. I just got dumped. I really have to have my head checked. Maybe it’s all the years I wasted on Kyle that is making me lose my sanity. Now the rest of the drive home just feels awkward, but we make small talk. When we are back at Zander’s place, he goes to his study to make some calls and to work for a bit. I had a feeling he is trying to get away from me, so I went to wash up. Then I started dinner because he gave Rosa some time off. I just decided on some creamy garlic seafood pasta, because I know he loves seafood. Another thing we have in common. We are actually a perfect match, unlike Kyle and me. “Stop it Liz, he is just your friend.” I whisper to myself. “Did you say something?” Zander says from behind me, making me jump and drop the spoon on the floor. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?” I ask, clutching my chest and he chuckles. “I didn’t exactly sneak in. Didn’t you hear me?” he asks. “No, I am sorry. My mind is all over the show lately.” I said. “I can understand that. I smelled seafood, and now I can’t work anymore.” He says and I chuckle. “It is actually done. Why don’t you set the table for us,” I say, and he nods and goes to the dining room. I plate the pasta and carry it to the table and sit down with him. I see he has already poured us some wine. I will just have one glass of wine; I can’t pass out every night. This man is going to think I have a problem. Who knows what I do or say when I am drunk? I really am not much of a drinker, but I enjoy drinking with Zander while we chill. Zander This woman has me tied up in knots. I know I shouldn’t want her as much as I do, but I just can’t help it. Everything about her turns me on. I have to contain myself and help her first. It's unprofessional to covet my client and I won’t be responsible for her losing in this divorce battle. I know she doesn’t want anything from him except the house, but I will make sure I crush him. He wanted to leave her homeless and destitute. What kind of man would do that to a wonderful woman like her? He is such a fool, but I will be sure not to follow in his footsteps. I will give her the world if she lets me. It felt a bit awkward after that brief kiss, but I know she tried to brush it off. I immediately went to make a few calls in my office when we came home. I need to get all the evidence I can so that she can get a bit of payback. I can’t believe that anyone would leave a wonderful, beautiful woman for a girl like Tiffany. I say girl, because to me, she is still a child, and she surely acts like one. It's true that some men still leave good women for younger models. But Kyle is an i***t and his regret will come too late. I watch her as she chats animatedly about the trouble Robyn used to get into. She looks so beautiful when she is happy and smiling. I can see she loves Robyn. She is right though, Robyn used to be very flighty and a tad bit crazy. The way she scared Keira off had me laughing my ass off. I am sure Keira will give me a few days of peace after Robyn’s show. She is a good friend, and I am thankful to her for always being there for Liz. “I also want to start looking for Mary. She deserves to get from those winnings. It was her money that bought the ticket after all. I also got the impression that she is alone.” Liz says after a while. “I will help you with that.” I say and she smiles. “You are way too good to me,” she says, taking a sip of her wine. I can’t help but watch her lips, it’s just so inviting. I looked away before she could catch me, and took my phone out of my pocket. I heard a message come through a while ago, but I didn’t want to interrupt her while she was talking. I see it’s a message from Toby, my assistant, so I read it. I looked up at Liz and smiled. “I got some footage of Kyle and Tiffany at that same mall on three occasions over the past few months. My assistant, Toby, is still doing some more digging. According to his financial records, he booked into a hotel close to his office a few times. Toby is trying to secure some footage there too. We know when the card was used to make p*****t, so that helps. In a day or two we should have enough evidence,” I said. “Wow, I take it you have done this many times before?” she asks and I chuckle. “I love doing the investigations myself. It gives me a thrill.” I say and she nods. “I enjoyed our stakeout today too.” she says, not making eye contact. “I am sorry about the kiss. I had to make it look authentic, and I didn’t want him to recognize you.” I said. “It’s okay, I know. So, what do we do now? Do we just wait for more evidence?” she asks, changing the subject. The last thing I want is for her to feel uncomfortable. “Yes, I have to go into the office tomorrow, so you have the house all to yourself.” I said. “Okay, I know you have to work. I will find a way to entertain myself. I also want to go to the park and see if I can locate Mary. Maybe she goes there every day.” She says. Maybe I should get someone to tap into the cameras at the entrances of the park. I know there aren’t any cameras inside, but all the entrances have surveillance cameras. “That’s a good idea, but I want you to be careful. Its best that you stay away from Kyle and Tiffany until we are ready.” I say and she nods. “Don’t worry, I don’t plan on going anywhere near those two. I only have so much willpower, you know.” She says and I chuckle. “I understand, those two would make anyone want to beat the s**t out of them. Do you know what attorney he is using? He didn’t add his details to the original agreement you gave me. We also didn’t see any payments to a legal firm in his financial statement,” I say. “I have no idea. He just said that his lawyer will be present when I come see him.” she says. “I have checked with every firm in the city, and no one has him listed as a client.” I say. “That’s odd, maybe he drafted the agreement himself.” she says. “Maybe, but enough about that. What do you want to do tonight?” I asked her. “I am actually exhausted, so I was going to have an early night.” She says and I nod. “That’s a good idea, I have to up extra early anyway. I have some catching up to do,” I said. “Just don’t overwork yourself. It’s the holidays after all.” She says and I smile and nod. We finished our meal, and then I helped her clean up. We work really well together and are done very quickly. I hope she can see just how natural this feels. Like we were always meant to live together. We walk upstairs together and reach her room first. “Good night, Zander,” she says with her hand on her room door’s handle. “Good night, Liz, sweet dreams.” I say and she smiles. “You too,” she says and goes into her room. She gives me one last glance, before she closes her door. I rest my forehead on the door and sigh. “Just go to your room Zander,” I say to myself, and she immediately opens the door when I turn to leave. “Did you say something?” she asks, peeping out. “No sorry, night.” I say and turn and walk to my room. What the f**k is wrong with me? She is still a married woman, and she isn’t ready for a relationship. I take a shower, and as usual, jerk off to fantasies of her. That seems to be the norm for me since she moved in. I can’t stand being this close to her and not being able to make a move. I get into bed and try to fall asleep. It's kind of hard when she consumes my thoughts. This is going to be another long night.
