Still searching

DYLAN’S POV “Dylan… Mr. Smith is waiting for you in the east wing of the mansion. Shall I tell him that you are on your way?” Theo asked me, I really wasn’t in the mood to be meeting with anyone but the fact that Theo had come to announce this man showed me that he must have been of some importance although I couldn’t recall myself scheduling a meeting with him. “Mr. Smith… who is that?” I asked him as I kept my focus on my laptop. “he is the man who stole money while working for us at the casino,” he said, and I raised my eyebrows. I had been waiting for him to finally pay me a visit however, he had bad timing. Now wasn’t the time for me to be dealing with him. “I am too busy, tell him that I will see him some other time” I dismissed, I still had to decide how I was going to deal with him since he obviously couldn’t steal the million dollars that he gambled away while working with us. He had only been hired for a day when the incident happened, and on that day, it turned out that he had only gotten the job because he thought that my employees at the palace got to gamble for free. Instead of actually working, he spent his whole shift gambling and trying to make money until he got himself into a deep hole of debt. Naturally, I blamed the employees that allowed him to gamble that much but ultimately the blame lay with him and I wasn’t going to let him off the hook that easily. I suffered a loss because of him, and I was still deciding what the fitting punishment for this was. “I am afraid he is refusing to leave,” Theo said “the man is like a dog with a bone, he has refused to leave until he sees you,” he said “He is not even in a position to be making demands. Has he forgotten who I am?” I asked and Theo shrugged. “he says that he wants to make things right,” he said and I chuckled. “How does he intend to do that?” I asked “It's not like he can dish out a million dollars right now which is what will make things right at this moment,” I said as I refocused on my work “I think you should meet with him because if you don’t he will keep coming back. I know you don’t want a human hanging around here more than necessary” he said and I sighed. “what does he want from me? Does he have my money?” I asked, and he shook his head and I scoffed, why would he insist on seeing me if he didn’t have my money with him? Was he here to beg for mercy? ” So why does he want to waste my time like that?” I asked “he doesn’t have my money so there is no need for me to see him. Go and tell him that. Throw him out if he still refuses to leave. You should have thrown him out a long time ago, he can't force me to meet with him” I added “he brought a girl with him,” he said, and that caught my interest. I already knew that he had a daughter and she was the one that I wanted as payment but I never thought that he would bring her. When I suggested that he bring her to work with me he hadn’t said much and that was the reason why I didn’t think that he would even consider giving her to me. I even felt silly for asking him to hand her over as payment because that was not the kind of wolf I was. Don’t get me wrong, I loved women and I didn’t care if they were wolves or human if they were pretty. However I had never kept a human in my mansion for longer than a night, but because of what I had heard, I wanted this one by my side. I had never really met the girl but the employees that had seen her had told me that she was very beautiful. After Mr. Smith stopped working for us, I tried to get as much information about him as I could, I wanted to know if he had any family that I could get to. I wanted to know if he had any close family that I could use to get what I wanted and that was when I found out that he only had a daughter. They were the ones who made me interested in having her as one of my ladies. I had never had a human stay long in my mansion before and this was a very risky thing for me to do but I was bored with the ladies I had and being so far from the wolf kingdom meant that I had limited options. It was better than a human. Then a rogue. “take her to the guest room” I ordered and Theo seemed caught off guard by that and he hesitated before saying anything else. “What is it?” I asked him irritated. “Are you sure you want her to stay here…with us?” he asked me and I sighed “Of course I am, now go,” I said, I didn’t want him to stay here and try to convince me that this was a bad idea. I already knew that it was a bad idea but I also didn’t want to let her go. Now that I had gotten what I wanted, I was going to give Mr. Smith a break and cancel his debt. It wasn’t like I needed the money anyway, and it was never going to be said that I forced him to give me his daughter in exchange for the money that he owed me, I told him he had to choose between giving me my money or her and he made his choice. He had offered his daughter to me and this was an offer that I couldn’t say no to. I was still in search of my mate and although I didn’t want her to be, she could be human. “Alpha…don’t you want to meet her first?” Theo asked me, every time Theo called me Alpha it kind of freaked me out because it showed me that he wasn’t talking to me as my friend but as my subject and advisor. It showed me that he felt that my decision could negatively affect the pack. ”she is human” he added as if that was a reason for me to not meet her. Her being human didn’t mean anything to me right now because I had already made up my mind and it shouldn’t mean anything to him either. “I know that,” I said “Having her here will be risky. She will be too close to you and us, and she might find out and expose us” One thing I hated about Theo was his ability to overthink even the simplest matter. She wasn’t even coming here to play princess with me, he was overthinking this. As far as I was concerned the human girl was nothing but entertainment. “she will never be close enough to uncover who and what we are,” I said “You will have to make sure that she is kept locked up to avoid any accidents” I added “Alpha…with all due respect, do I have to remind you what your mother said to us before we left the pack?” he asked me, and I sighed. My mother's greatest fear was that I would end up adopting the human traditions or worse, falling in love with a human. “No you don’t have to remind me anything, but I think you are overthinking this. What if my mate is out there in the human race? I can’t keep myself confined in this place hoping that one day my mate will just pop up. My father will die any day, and we have been to every pack searching for her, maybe it is time to broaden our search” I said, Theo knew as well as I did that taking over the throne would be difficult for me if I didn’t have a mate. Controlling the kingdom would be hard because they would ask how I hoped to control a kingdom if I didn’t have a family. Some of the traditions and principles in my father's kingdom were outdated and stupid. The same applied to their resentment of humans. I still didn’t understand why wolves would hate humans much because I felt that humans were the ones who had the right to hate wolves. Humans were the ones who were not safe with us around and yet it seemed as if the wolves back in my kingdom saw humans as a threat. “I understand, but I don’t think we need a half-human as an heir to the throne, your mother will never accept her,” he said, and he was right about that. I had allowed my desperation to go to my head, and I hadn’t thought this through. “What do you suggest I do?” I asked him “I mean, she is already here, and I already canceled the debt,” “I think we should search for your mate once more in the wolf territory. Maybe she has just come of age. We can’t give up on that now” he said “Do you seriously believe that I still have a chance to find my mate despite the fact that we have already exhausted every option we had?” I asked him, and he nodded enthusiastically “It is never too late to try, I think we should attend the next mating ball, and maybe then we will get lucky,” he said “I mean we haven’t searched amongst the rogues and surely having a rogue for a mate is better than having a human,” he said and I scoffed “I don’t really agree with you because rogues can’t be controlled and they can't follow instructions, unlike humans. Humans are scared and therefore they are easier to control and manage. Not that I want a mate that I can control, but I would like the one that won't always go off the rails” I said and he sighed “I understand what you are saying but I still think that having that human girl here is a very bad idea,” he said and I sighed, he wasn’t going to let it go until I told him to go ahead and get rid of her. “So what you are telling me is that I should just get rid of her?” I asked him, her father had already left her with me, and if I gave her back to him, people were going to think that I was starting to go easy. “I would suggest that you give her back to him, but I already know that you won’t agree to that. So I will suggest that you keep her at arm’s length. You don’t even have to meet with her or see her at all. Let her remain here as a mistress so that she won’t participate in any activity of the pack. This is the best suggestion that I can give you” he said as he bowed his head and walked out. “I might as well let her go then,” I said but frowned “The only reason why I won’t do that is because I don’t want to feel like I let Mr. Smith go without any punishment” I added “Then have s*x with her if you must because I know that your curiosity is making you make most of these decisions. You have had humans before and that is why I don’t understand this fascination with her” he said “To be honest, I don’t either. I am just Drawn to her” I explained “but I will let her go once I have my fun with her” I said I couldn’t be selfish and only think of myself when it came to making such decisions. The truth was that the human girl was a risk that I should have ever taken, and I should have never brought her here, but her father had to be taught a lesson. Maybe I would only keep her here for a little while and send her back home with the hopes that her father would have learned his lesson. Theo was right, I didn’t have to meet this girl or have any sort of physical contact with her because that would only cause trouble for me. The last thing that I needed was a human mate and although I still hadn’t met my mate I was certain that the moon goddess wouldn’t set me up against my beloved mother by giving me a human mate. Theo was right. My mate had probably just come of age, and I would meet her at the next mating ball. I had high hopes to be attending the next mating ball with my mate and as a mated wolf, but I had to accept that it wasn’t me but the moon goddess who was in charge of my life.
