The wasteland stretches out before us, an endless expanse of barren earth and jagged ruins. The air is heavy with the scent of scorched metal and decay, and the horizon is a hazy blur of gray and orange.
We move cautiously, the events of the previous day fresh in our minds. The apex predator’s corpse is far behind us, but its shadow lingers in our thoughts. The wasteland is alive in ways we didn’t fully understand before, and every step forward feels like an invitation for something worse.
Finn is the first to break the silence. “You think there are more of those things out here?”
Kade glances back at him, his expression unreadable. “Probably. The facility we destroyed wasn’t the only one experimenting with creatures like that.”
“Great,” Finn mutters. “Because one wasn’t bad enough.”
“We survived,” Lila says, her tone sharp. “That’s all that matters.”
---
The sky grows darker as we press on, thick storm clouds gathering overhead. The wind picks up, whipping dust and ash into the air. It’s not long before we’re forced to pull our scarves up over our mouths and noses to keep from choking.
“This storm’s going to get worse,” Kade says, his voice muffled by the scarf. “We need to find shelter.”
“There’s a structure up ahead,” Lila says, pointing to a jagged silhouette on the horizon.
As we get closer, the structure comes into focus. It’s a crumbling building, half-buried in the shifting sands. The walls are cracked and scorched, and the roof is partially caved in, but it’s the only option we have.
“Looks stable enough,” Finn says, though he doesn’t sound convinced.
“We don’t have a choice,” Kade replies. “Let’s get inside.”
---
The interior of the building is as bleak as the outside. Broken furniture and shattered glass litter the floor, and the walls are covered in faded graffiti. The air is stale and carries a faint metallic tang.
We set up camp in what appears to have once been a lobby. Finn and Lila gather debris to start a small fire, while Kade and I take stock of our supplies.
“We’re running low on water,” I note, holding up a nearly empty canteen.
Kade nods grimly. “We’ll have to find more soon. The map shows a river a few miles east, but there’s no guarantee it’s not contaminated.”
“Nothing’s guaranteed anymore,” I say.
---
The storm rages outside, the wind howling like a living thing. The building creaks and groans under the assault, and dust rains down from the cracks in the ceiling.
We sit around the fire, its flickering light casting long shadows on the walls. It’s a small comfort in an otherwise desolate place.
“What do you think it was like before all this?” Lila asks, breaking the silence.
“Before the fallout?” Finn replies. He leans back against the wall, his rifle resting on his lap. “Quieter. Cleaner. Probably boring.”
Lila smirks. “Boring doesn’t sound so bad right now.”
Kade doesn’t join in the conversation. He sits apart from the rest of us, his gaze fixed on the fire. I can tell he’s thinking about what’s ahead—about the next facility, the next fight.
---
The peace doesn’t last.
A loud crash echoes through the building, followed by the sound of something heavy moving in the darkness.
We’re on our feet in an instant, weapons drawn.
“What was that?” Lila whispers, her knife gleaming in the firelight.
Finn motions for silence, his eyes scanning the shadows. “Stay together,” he says quietly.
The sound comes again, closer this time. It’s a low, guttural growl, followed by the scrape of claws on concrete.
“Something’s in here with us,” Kade says, his voice tense.
---
The first creature lunges out of the shadows, its glowing eyes and mutated form barely visible in the dim light. Finn fires his rifle, the gunshots deafening in the enclosed space. The creature screeches and collapses, but more emerge from the darkness.
“Fall back!” Kade yells, firing his pistol.
We retreat deeper into the building, the creatures chasing us. They’re smaller than the apex predator but just as vicious, their bodies twisted and grotesque.
“Upstairs!” I shout, spotting a staircase at the end of the hall.
We race up the stairs, the creatures right on our heels. Lila slashes at one that gets too close, her blade slicing through its elongated neck.
“Keep moving!” Kade urges.
---
We reach the top floor, a large open space with broken windows overlooking the storm outside. The wind howls through the gaps, and the floor trembles under our weight.
“This place isn’t going to hold!” Finn shouts, firing at another creature as it climbs the stairs.
“We need to thin them out!” Kade says. “Set up a chokepoint!”
We form a line near the stairwell, using the narrow space to our advantage. Finn fires in controlled bursts, while Lila and I take down any creatures that get too close. Kade works quickly, rigging one of his makeshift explosives.
“Cover me!” he yells.
Lila and I hold the line while Kade plants the explosive near the top of the stairs.
“Fall back!” he shouts once it’s armed.
We retreat to the far end of the room, and Kade detonates the charge. The explosion collapses the staircase, sending a cloud of debris and dismembered creatures into the air.
---
When the dust settles, the creatures are gone, and the storm outside has begun to die down.
“Everyone okay?” Kade asks, his voice hoarse.
“Barely,” Finn mutters, wiping blood from a cut on his forehead.
“We can’t stay here,” Lila says. “The building’s too unstable.”
Kade nods. “We’ll move out at first light.”
---
We spend the rest of the night in uneasy silence, keeping watch in shifts. The storm has cleared by morning, but the wasteland looks no less hostile.
As we step out into the cold, desolate landscape, I can’t shake the feeling that we’re being watched. The shadows seem to linger longer than they should, and the air feels heavier.
The wasteland has changed. And so have we.
