Wolves of the new dawn

We should have known better. We should have listened to the expects and seen the signs, to our planet and not to the leaders who only had profit on their minds, claiming that everything was fine, that the experts were blowing things out of proportion. But we didn’t. Maybe we were too naive. Maybe we just didn’t care enough... No matter what, we went and ruined the earth... our mother. First it was the little things, hotter summers, colder winters, worse storms... the water levels rose as the ice melted, but we were told over and over that it was a coincidence, that it would right itself after some time, that it was the natural cycle of things. But of course it didn’t. And after the election of 2024 it all went downhill fast… the new government only cared for themself, for profit and they rolled back a lot of the things that had been put in motion to stop the catastrophe. They also started stripping women and minorities of their rights, I guess that is another story… and then it was part of why it all went so bad. The first big incident happened in 2027, the big California quake. Most of the state literally sank into the ocean and most of the western seaboard was devastated. The World was left stunned, so many lives lost. At that point they still tried to claim that it was an unrelated, pure accident, they even hinted it was spurred on by the sins of Hollywood. But then the water started to rise, claiming first some islands and flooding most of the Netherlands, and after that several other European countries had to give up fighting the water. It was clear to see that our Eastern seaboard would be next. Finally they did something, they started on a big wall, keeping the ocean at bay, protecting the land. But they weren’t fast enough and we had to abandon first Florida, and then most of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and South Carolina to the waters. In 2037 the wall was finally done, and the rising waters contained. But unfortunately this wasn’t the end of it. There was too much pollution, too much waste. There was nowhere to put it, so we buried it in the ground. People started getting sick, plants started dying. We tried changing things, but it was too little, too late. The ball had started rolling and it was impossible to stop it. People started huddling together, leaving the most polluted areas. Food quickly became sparse and things needed to be done. New York already had a wall towards the ocean and a new one was built around the city and the surrounding area, creating one huge, protected city… these days mostly referred to as ‘The city’. People were told to come there, live within the safety of the walls. A lot of effort was put into new sources of food, artificial food, and clean air. There was put restrictions on having kids. First it took a permit to have more than one kid, then to have kids at all. The rules getting stricter and stricter. Then the summer of 2049 hit. Temperatures hit new record highs. People and animals dropped dead on the spot, plants and crops withered. The drought came, leaving most of the land a barren desert wasteland. Up north the pollution and the atomic waste started boiling up from the ground. It was the end of the world. All that was left was The City, the preachers told people this was God smithing out evil. The national board was formed, a council of 7 board members, led by the national executive or the NEO. But even with this, the pollution and the artificial food did things to people, slowly making us more fragile. It has now been 80 years since that summer and no one remembers how it used to be before any longer. The rich and the powerful live in the part called the high city. In big houses, with lavish gardens and glass domes, plenty of food and clean air. The small middle class lives in the City center, small houses with little gardens or nice apartments, most of them are scientists or have other government type jobs. The rest, they live in the suburbs, in slums, in dirt and pollution. There are no gardens there and food is a luxury. Life is hard and short. The biggest problem the world is facing at this point is the fact that men are sterile. The last 40 years no child has been conceived outside a lab and in the last 10 years none at all. The scientists fight to help the problem, but so far no luck, the human race is slowly dying. Cloning was tried but turned out not to be a success on humans, the result being dangerous and deform humanoid creatures. Outside the city is the wasteland and the polluted areas, said to be roamed by mutated Zombie like creatures, but few really know, as no one dare venture there.
