Hamilton was soliloquizing, "What must it be now?" His annoyance at this point was that he is finding this out now that he had already begun to put things in order between himself and Edythe. Just as Mason had said, he had to tell Hellen that he is already in a relationship. This was the best thing he must do especially now that she had not said anything about loving him.
"You know what to bubby." Mason interrupted his silence.
"Yes I know what to do, but I don't know how to do it. I am thinking of telling her that I am in a relationship already but it would look odd since she had not said the words even though her attitude had said it all."
