CLAIRE
“Good morning.” I greeted customers with a smile as they entered the convenience store. It’s been three months since I left my old life. Unfortunately, I couldn’t continue my studies, but it could wait. For now, I’m focusing on work and giving myself more rest than I used to in the past.
My body has been through many changes, but thankfully, nothing has hindered me from working. It wasn’t easy, but my child hasn’t been giving me a lot of problems, as if it were comforting me too. I really wanted to know whether the child was a boy or a girl, but I guess I had to wait until the baby was born. I don’t mind and would surely love the child either way, but a part of me wanted a girl. A firstborn son is very important to the line of leaders in a pack, as they are mostly alphas.
Maybe if the child is a girl, she would dodge a harsh fate, and it would lower the chance of her being taken from me. It sounded selfish, but I’ll do everything in my power for my child not to be taken away from me, even if it means I’ll have to raise my child alone.
“That’ll be 12.50,” I informed the customer after scanning all the items she bought. She immediately handed me the p*****t and promptly left after I gave her the receipt.
I’ve been taking on several jobs, but nothing heavy or very hectic. Slowly, I was able to save up, and hopefully, nothing would go wrong.
To my surprise, I suddenly heard cries from one of the last aisles. My wolf quickly warned me to be cautious. Despite the warning, I got off the counter and checked the commotion.
“H-help us.” The high school students that I greeted earlier pleaded. I froze in my spot. The man threatening them was holding a gun. He was wearing a mask, and only his eyes were visible.
“Give me everything in the cash register, or I’ll blow this girl’s head and kill you too.” I could hear his heartbeat, and he sounded serious about his threat.
I raised my hands as if I were surrendering, “Please calm down. I’ll do as you say.” I really should have left and maybe asked for help, but I couldn’t stop myself from jumping right into the problem.
He grabbed one of the girls with him and asked the other two to follow. The gun was hidden from view outside, and I doubt anyone would try to help if they even saw it.
“Stop crying!” He exclaimed to the girls. I would have pushed my luck and tried fighting this man, but I can’t risk my child. Our bodies heal a lot faster, but guns can kill us too.
“I’ll give you what you want, so please don’t hurt the children.” I tried to talk and distract him while I put out the money from the register.
I stopped in my tracks after catching another werewolf’s scent.
“What are you doing? Quit stalling and give me the money!” I heard the door opening, making the man tense up. He was also scared of being caught.
I looked at the man who had just entered. He knew what was happening, but I didn’t know if he would help. He walked toward the aisles and acted like he hadn’t seen anything.
“Here’s everything,” I said as I gathered the money in a plastic bag. I’ll probably be fired, but I have to end this as safely as possible.
The man snatched the plastic bag from my hand and gave a final threat, “Don’t you dare do anything funny. I saw your faces. I will chase down not only you but your family.” I felt the students shudder at his threat. I wasn’t terrified of him, but it wasn’t only me that I had to worry about.
He got out, and I thought that was the end of it, but the werewolf who had entered earlier suddenly chased after the thief. Catching him off guard, the werewolf effortlessly disarmed the human, swiftly kicking the gun out of his grasp.
So he was just waiting for the man to leave the shop?
I hurried outside only to find him already restraining the human, his hand firmly gripping the man’s neck. He glanced at me and smiled, saying, “Could you please call the police? I’ll make sure this guy stays down until they arrive.”
“Thank you. You saved my job and a lot of crazy paperwork.” I said and handed him a sandwich, which was the only compensation I could give. The thief got arrested, and we had to file a police report. I also called the owners, and everything has been settled, thanks to Bryce.
“It’s nothing. I apologize that I couldn’t help you sooner. He was serious about shooting you guys earlier.” He simply explained. The children that were held hostage were very thankful for him as well. Their parents and school were called, and I’m simply grateful that this day worked out despite what happened.
I nodded, “Yeah. I felt that too. I’m grateful that you helped out. I really thought you weren’t helping when you just passed by us.”
“Your name is Claire, right?”
“Yes. Yours is Bryce.” He chuckled. We didn’t get a proper introduction and only got each other’s names through the police report.
He extended his hand, “Let’s go back to square one. I’m Bryce Preswood, and you are?”
“Claire Ethridge. Nice to meet you, and thank you for helping me earlier.” He might be the most non-intimidating Alpha I’ve ever met. I didn’t notice it at first until we got close to each other.
“Uhh, may I ask why you’re here alone?” My mood plummeted after hearing that question.
I cleared my throat, “I didn’t intend to trespass on any territory. I had some… or a lot, of problems that I chose to run away from. I promise I’m not a problematic rogue.”
“Don’t worry. I don’t judge. Actually, I’m also a rogue like you.”
My mind blanked out for a moment. How did an alpha like him become a rogue?
