PROLOGUE
The air was unbearably suffocating, heavy with the stress of an unspoken truth hanging between them. Braxton’s footsteps echoed through the vaguely ignited clearing, his movements tense, his gaze distant. Andrea could sense something was wrong – terribly wrong. The way he had looked at her moments ago, that sharp, cold gaze, was not the gaze of the man she knew. It was the gaze of a man who had uncovered a betrayal, a betrayal that cut deeper than any blade. “Braxton…?” Her voice was low and hoarse, a tremor of fear lacing each syllable. She took a hesitant step forward, but he held up a hand, stopping her in her tracks. His jaw was clenched, eyes hard, as if he were holding back a tidal wave of emotions that he could barely contain. “Don’t,” he said, his voice a dangerous low rumble. “Don’t come any closer, Andrea.” Her heart dropped. She could feel the energy between them, the pull of the mate bond, as undeniable and powerful as the sun rising each morning. It called to her, whispering that he was hers, that they were meant for each other. But the way he was looking at her now, like she was a stranger, or worse, an enemy, sent a wave of dread crashing over her. “Braxton, what’s going on?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. She didn’t know what he had discovered, but the look in his eyes told her it was something terrible. “Please, talk to me.” He laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that seemed to echo through the stillness of the night. “Talk to you?” he repeated, his voice filled with a bitterness that sent chills down her spine. “Oh, I’d love to talk to you, Andrea. I’d love to hear you explain how you could lie to my face for all this time. How could you stand by my side, pretend to care about me, when all along you were nothing but a conniving b***h?” Andrea’s heart ached at how he called her, her breath catching in her throat. “What… what are you talking about?” “Don’t play dumb with me, Andrea!” he snapped, his voice rising, a mixture of anger and pain seeping through. “You think I wouldn’t find out? That I’d never realize who you truly are? Or, should I say, who you were?” He took a step closer, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at her. “Tell me, Andrea. Tell me about Ryzon. Tell me about the man you once served.” Her blood ran cold. She felt the world tilt, the ground seeming to disappear beneath her feet. How could he have found out? She had been so careful, so certain that her past would remain buried, hidden from the man she loved. But now, staring into his eyes, she saw that he knew – knew everything. “Braxton…” she whispered his name, trembling. “It’s not what you think–” “Don’t!” he barked, his voice filled with fury. “Don’t you dare lie to me. Not now. Not after everything.” She felt the sting of tears pricking her eyes, but she forced herself to look at him, to hold his gaze. “I didn’t lie to you, Braxton. I… I was going to tell you. I just… I didn’t know how.” “Didn’t know how?” he repeated, his voice thick with disbelief. “You didn’t know how to tell me that you once worked for the man who destroyed everything I’ve fought for? The man who tore apart families, who nearly destroyed our people? And you thought I’d be okay with that?” Tears began to spill down her cheeks, and she took a trembling step forward, reaching out to him. “Braxton, please, you must understand. I was young then. I didn’t know what he truly was. By the time I realized, I was in too deep, and I… I didn’t know how to get out.” He stepped back, out of her reach, his eyes cold and stiff. “Don’t touch me,” he growled with his tone filled with pain. “I trusted you, Andrea. I let myself… I let myself feel things for you that I swore I’d never feel again. And all this time, you were hiding this from me.” “Please, Braxton,” she begged, her voice breaking. “Please, just listen to me. I never meant to hurt you. I… I love you.” The words slipped out before she could stop them, a desperate plea, a last shred of hope. But they seemed to have the opposite effect, his expression twisting into one of raw, unfiltered agony. “Love?” he spat, his tone dripping with contempt. “You call this love? Betraying me, lying to me? How could you stand there, day after day, pretending to care, when you knew what I’d been through? When you knew what Ryzon did to my family, to my people? How could you, Andrea?” Each word was like a dagger, slicing through her heart. She opened her mouth to speak, to explain, but the look in his eyes silenced her, a look of pure, unrelenting rage and disappointment. “I thought you were different,” he said quietly, gritting his teeth. It felt like he was just trying to stop himself from hurting her. “I thought you were someone I could trust. But you’re just like the rest of them. Just like everyone else who’s ever betrayed me.” She could feel the bond between them fraying, the mate connection that had once been so strong now weakened, poisoned by his anger and her guilt. The pain was almost unbearable, a physical ache deep within her, as if her very soul was being torn apart. “Braxton, please,” she whispered, reaching out to him once more. “Don’t do this. Don’t push me away. I made mistakes, yes, but I’m not that person anymore. I swear, I’ve changed. I’m on your side now. I’m with you.” He shook his head, his expression hardening. “It’s too late, Andrea. Too late for explanations, too late for apologies. I can’t… I can’t forgive this. I can’t forgive you.” A sob escaped her, and she fell to her knees, clutching at his hands. “Please, Braxton, please. I can’t lose you. I’ll do anything – anything to make it right. Just don’t… don’t do this.” But he pulled his hands free, looking down at her with an emotion she had never seen before – disgust. “I have to,” he said, his voice cold and final. “I can’t be with someone who betrayed me like this. I can’t be with someone who was once loyal to the man who took everything from me. I won’t.” And then he said the words that shattered her heart completely, words she had prayed she would never hear. “I Braxton Hingestone, reject you, Andrea Balfager, as my mate. As anything.” The mate bond began to break with a force that felt like lightning ripping through her chest, a searing pain that left her gasping for breath. She felt the connection snap, felt herself lose the one person she had thought would forever be hers. The agony was so intense, so all-consuming, that she could barely see, barely breathe. It was as if her very soul had been ripped from her, leaving her hollow, empty. “Braxton… no,” she choked out, reaching for him, her vision blurred with tears. “Please, don’t do this. Don’t leave me. I can’t… I can’t lose you.” But he was already turning away, his face a mask of pain and fury. He didn’t look back, didn’t offer her any comfort, any chance of redemption. All she could see was his back, retreating into the darkness, leaving her alone, broken, and betrayed. “Braxton!” she screamed in raw desperation. But he didn’t stop. He didn’t turn around. And she knew, with a sickening certainty, that he never would. The forest around Andrea felt as though it was closing in on her, swallowing her in darkness and despair. Her whole body trembled, the almost broken mate bond leaving her in unimaginable pain, as though her very soul was being ripped apart from within. But the agony in her chest couldn’t compare to the devastation in her heart. Staggering to her feet, Andrea stumbled forward, determined not to let him go. She couldn’t let it end like this. She wouldn’t. “Braxton!” she called his name again, pleading. She ran after him, her hands reaching out to him, desperate to hold him, to anchor herself to him. She found him only a few steps ahead, his back turned to her, shoulders stiff with tension. He stopped, but didn’t turn around, didn’t acknowledge her presence. She fell to her knees again, her hands clutching at his cloak, pulling him toward her as if that alone could prevent him from leaving. “Please,” she begged with all the desperation she had. “Please, Braxton, just listen to me. Just… give me a chance to explain. I… I know I hurt you. I know I made terrible mistakes, but I never meant to betray you.” Braxton’s shoulders stiffened more, and he let out a harsh, humorless laugh. “Explain?” he coldly and bitterly barked. “What is there left to explain, Andrea? You betrayed me, you betrayed my people, and for what? For loyalty to Ryzon?” Her heart wrenched at the sound of that name, a name that now felt like poison on her tongue. She hated Ryzon, hated him with every fiber of her being. But how could she make Braxton see that? How could she make him understand that she had been young, naive, lost? “No,” she whispered, clutching at his cloak even tighter, her fingers trembling. “It wasn’t loyalty, Braxton. I was just… I was trapped. He manipulated me. I didn’t know… I didn’t know who he really was.” He spun around, his face twisted in anger, his eyes filled with a hurt so deep it nearly brought her to her knees. “Didn’t know?” he hissed, his voice dripping with venom. “Are you saying you were just an innocent witness, Andrea? That you were just some poor, misguided girl caught in the wrong place at the wrong time? We both know how smart you are! Don’t make me look like a worse fool than I was already. Just accept the rejection and never show your face to me again!” Tears blurred her vision, and she shook her head, feeling her words falter. “No, I… I was foolish. I thought… I thought I was helping people. He made me believe that… that we were doing something good. But the moment I realized who he truly was, I tried to leave. I tried to get out.” “And yet you stayed,” he snarled, his tone sharp and unforgiving. “You stayed long enough to do his bidding, to carry out his orders. Long enough to betray everything I stand for. Do you have any idea what it’s like, Andrea? To find out that the one person you trusted, the one person you let into your heart, was once loyal to the man who destroyed everything?” His words struck her like a physical blow, each one slicing through her, leaving her raw, exposed. She felt her resolve faltering, her hope crumbling, but she couldn’t give up. Not yet. “Braxton,” she pleaded, willing to do anything to gain his forgiveness, “I love you. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I swear to you… I swear, I am not the person I was back then. I’m yours. I’ve changed. I am on your side now. Please… please don’t walk away.” He stared at her, his gaze filled with so much pain and rage that it was almost agonizing. “You’re mine?” he echoed sarcastically, dripping with bitterness. “How can you even say that, Andrea? How can you stand there and say you’re mine when you’ve lied to me from the start?” She cried harder, her entire body trembling as she clung to him, her hands gripping his cloak as if it were her only lifeline. “I was scared, Braxton. Scared that you’d hate me, that you’d see me as the monster I was once a part of. I kept it from you because… because I couldn’t bear to lose you. I thought if I could prove myself, if I could make you see who I am now, maybe… maybe you’d understand.” He yanked his cloak from her grasp, stepping back, his face a mask of fury and pain. “Understand?” he spat. “How can I understand this, Andrea? How can I understand loving someone who was once my enemy?” The gravity of his rejection crashed over her, nearly bringing her to her knees again. She felt as though the earth had opened beneath her, swallowing her whole. Her whole life, her whole purpose, had become wrapped around him, around the bond they shared. And now that bond was raveling, slipping through her fingers like sand. “Braxton, please,” she breathed desperately. “I am begging you. Don’t do this. Don’t leave me. I’ll do anything to make it right. I’ll prove my loyalty to you, to your people. Just… don’t reject me. Don’t push me away.” But his face remained cold, stiff. He took another step back, as if the mere sight of her pained him. “It’s too late, Andrea. Too late for apologies, too late for promises. I can’t look at you without seeing the betrayal, without seeing everything I’ve lost.” His words tore through her, each one a fresh wound, deep and raw. She could feel the bond weakening, slipping away, and with it, a piece of her very soul. The agony was indescribable, a pain that went beyond flesh and bone, striking deep into the core of her being. “Please,” she begged, endlessly. “Don’t do this. Don’t throw us away. I’ll prove to you that I’ve changed. I’ll prove my loyalty, my love. Just… give me a chance.” He looked at her then, and for a moment, she thought she saw a flicker of something – something softer, something that spoke of the love they had shared. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by a look of cold determination. “No, Andrea,” he said, his voice hard, final. “This is over. You made your choices, and now you must live with them. I don’t care what you say or what promises you make. I can’t forgive you. And I can’t… I can’t be with you.” The finality of his words settled over her like a shroud, and she felt her heart shatter, the broken pieces falling into the surrounding darkness. She reached out one last time, her fingers trembling as she tried to grasp his hand, but he pulled away, his gaze hard. “Goodbye, Andrea,” he mumbled painfully. And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving her alone in the darkness, the broken mate bond tearing at her heart, her soul. Andrea collapsed to the ground, her body wracked with sobs, her heart shattered beyond repair. She had lost him – the one person who had ever made her feel truly alive, the one person who had given her hope. And now, because of her own mistakes, her own choices, she had lost him forever. “Braxton!” she screamed into the night, her voice filled with a pain so deep, so raw, that it felt as though it might break her apart. But there was no answer, no response. Only silence. Only the cold, empty darkness. And as she lay there, broken and alone, she thought of her stupid choices settling over her, a heavy, inescapable burden that she would carry with her for the rest of her life.
