Seeing her so close to tears, forced me to take a step back. It must have been just as big a shock to her as it was to me. All this time I had hoped and told myself to just hang on and wait for her eighteenth birthday. It was in two months. I was reminding myself over and over I had just another two months to wait and then I would know, but now I knew. I took a step away from her and pulled my fingers through my hair. My first priority was to protect Tala. Not all females immediately went into heat the moment they met their mates, but some did and if she was one of them and another wolf … I softly growled just thinking about it.
