Chapter Fourteen A well-trained Steel constantly circles, knowing to maintain a leisurely pace. Following him is Max. A slim cord tied to the catgut in his nostrils and looped about Steel’s neck forces him to follow the steed’s gait. Behind Max is a load of stones, the heaviest yet, which is connected to his skin corset. The ponderous load causes his skin to stretch. Max is being forcibly exercised. He must toil and accept the slow and constant anguish, otherwise he will confront the intolerably sharp pain of the nostril binding. It is ironic that Steel is free to roam and the well-bound Max must follow. The procession is also indicative of the hierarchy of the campsite... Steel being a loyal and valued steed... Max being considered most expendable. Luda and Doodie are occupied inside
