My eyes snapped open at the sound of the lock opening. My eyes darted towards the frame of the door, opening slowly. who would it be? My mother, my brother or her loyal guard?
"Damon, Drake Helios ordered you to make the lunch," said the guard.
mother calls me a runt, she never uses my name to denote me. My brother left 3 years ago and has only come on some particular occasions.
The guard isn't cruel like my mother but surely can hurt me on her instructions if needed. With my wolf absent, it's better to stay unpunished as he can't heal me now.
I got on my feet as fast as my body could bear. I kept my bruised face hidden under the curtain of my hair, which had gotten grimy and pale for not having a proper meal and shower.
"the dragon king is going to arrive in our weyr today. Drake Helios, the counsellor, and I will be present. make food for 5 people as your brother can visit today. the food shall be prepared before 2 p.m. You have 2 hours, get going. I will set up the table, don't go outside to the dining hall, it's Drake Helios's order" The guard said and left.
It was a blessing that he would be setting up the table.
The ribs on my left side were bruised badly, my head ached and my vision was a little blurry. my shirt stuck to my wounded back, I hope there isn't any blood there.
I washed my hands and got to work immediately. since it was lunch, Mother would want light meat dishes and cheese on the menu along with a sweet dish.
I gathered the items from the fridge and started working. I boiled and peeled the chicken from the bone for the chicken salad, grated the cheese and toasted the cheese sandwiches, made chicken soup in case she didn't like the salad and started to work on the brownies.
I put the brownies in the oven when the clock struck 2 p.m. I quickly diced the fruits and started plating. Then took the brownies from the oven.
"the table is ready, hurry up before Drake Helios comes in" the guard ushered.
I was planting the brownies when Mother stalked into the kitchen, fuming
She fisted my hair and yanked my head back. a sound of pain erupted from me.
"you useless runt, where is the coffee?" she shouted.
The guard didn't say anything about coffee, has it been his trap to get me punished?
With her hand tangled in my hair, she punched me in the face. pain erupted across my face as blood splattered on the ground. I would already feel the bruise forming near m,y cheekbone.
"Drake Helios, the King is almost here. you should hurry up" said the guard.
at least he saved me from more punishment for now
My mother understood the urgency.
"I will see you after all this is done, runt. and then no one would save you from me" she growled in my face
she dragged me by my hair and pushed me into the dark room. the door closed behind me and I heard the lock closed.
