Chapter FifteenIt was nearly seven o’clock Tuesday night when Ruth entered her apartment. Her feet throbbed from walking the streets interviewing people for an article about immigrants and people of non-English heritage living in London. As anticipated, the challenge had been to get people to admit to their foreign ancestry, especially those of the Axis powers. Londoners had plenty to say about their neighbors and coworkers but had been reticent to discuss themselves. Nearly everyone who spoke to her refused to state their name, even when she had asked for only a first name. Fear and suspicion seemed to have a stranglehold on the citizens of the city, and she couldn’t blame them. Ruth rotated her head to stretch the stiffness from her neck. Too bad regulations only allowed for five inche
