After dinner Tyler said goodnight and then headed upstairs to go to bed. I didn't move from my spot at the table which drew attention to me, especially since I didn't eat the rest of the food that was on my plate.
"What's wrong Renesmee?" My mother asked me.
I looked at my father and he looked as curious as she had.
"Why don't you as dad." I replied.
My mother glanced at my father and he just shook his head. What was wrong? Did he not like the thought of me missing my Jake.
"I can't read her mind." My father then added.
My eyes widened in shock. This was impossible right? My father could read any mind, unless you count my mothers. She was a mental shield which prevented her mind from being read by my father unless she allowed him in.
"You are kidding right?" I asked surprised.
My father frowned and then shook his head. "I can't hear a thing which is curious."
"Do you think she has my shield?" my mother asked in a mere whisper.
"I can't be too sure but it makes sense. After all she has been reading minds lately just like myself."
"But we already know her gifts, where is this all coming from?"
"Some gifts can be delayed. When she was little she was able to show her thoughts, which she still can. Then she was able to will information from our minds. Now she can read thoughts and it seems as if she has found and put up a mental shield."
I gasped. How did I find a shield that I didn't even know I had. More importantly how do I learn to control it. I couldn't deny that it would come in handy if in turn I didn't want my parents to know something but at other times it's nice for my father to be able to understand what I was going through without having to try and explain it.
"Daddy, I don't know how to take it down."
He put his hand on my shoulder and rubbed it soothingly. "I know we will teach you. But for now it's time for you to get some sleep. Another day at school."
I gave both my parents and hug and a kiss and then headed upstairs to my room on the third floor. Once I sank into bed and closed my eyes I had fallen asleep.
Jake was standing before me, his look unkempt and his hair longer then I had ever seen it before. He looked sad and his appearance was that of neglect.
"How could you Renesmee. We were supposed to be together forever." He whispered to me.
Then the angle of the dream changed and I was looking at myself through Jake's eyes. I was beautiful as ever and I was standing beside another man only I couldn't see his face as it was blurred.
"I love you Jake. I always will. But I'm happy." I heard my voice say.
Then the angle changed again and I watched as Jake began trembling. I felt the air around him vibrate and then he burst into his wolf form before tilting his head up to the sky and howling. Then he began scraping his paw against the ground as a he growled, his teeth barred. He was angry.
I opened my eyes and gasped as I bolted upright in my bed. I was sweating and my pajama's were sticking to my skin. I looked behind me at the clock and saw it was just five minutes before I had to get up.
Sighing I rose to my feet and decided to start on my hygeine. Thirty minutes later I was standing in my bathroom dressed for school. I was dressed in white True Religion jeans, a white silk blouse and a powder blue knit sweater with a pair of ballet flats.
For the first time in my life I decided to try and straighten my hair. Which wasn't as hard as I thought. It was a nice change to have straight hair flowing down my back but I knew I wouldn't do this often.
Just minutes before I knew Roxette would be here I came down the stairs, my back pack hanging off my shoulder.
"Hey." Tyler smiled as I came out onto the front porch where him and my father were standing.
"Good morning Tyler." I leaned into my fathers arms and held him. "I love you dad."
"I love you too Renesmee."
I smiled. "So where is mom?" I asked curiously.
My father pointed over his shoulder. "She is doing her online classes in the office."
"Mom's in college?"
"Yes, and once you graduate you will be too."
I grinned. I couldn't wait to go to college. I wonder what it'd be like. More importantly where would I choose to go.
A small fog horn sounded in the distance and I looked up just in time to see Roxette climbing onto the dock.
I turned to Tyler. "It's time to go to school." I took his hand and towed him down the pebble path towards the dock. "I love you dad, mom." I called over my shoulder.
"We take a boat to school?" Tyler asked as I released his hand at the dock.
"A boat and then a limo. My parents have import stuff to tend to."
"What kind of important stuff?"
"My dad is a doctor and my mom is trying to get back into school. The past year for the family has been really rough."
We climbed onto the boat and made our way into the cabin and sat down. Just like before a waiter came over and asked us if we wanted anything. This time I was too hungry to turn down a meal offer, especially since I didn't eat much last night.
After we gave the waiter our orders he took them to the cook and then we were left to each others company as we watched the darkened scenery pass us by.
"So. You said your family went through a rough time. Do you mind if I ask what about?" Tyler began.
I stared blankly out the window as I thought about what I would tell him. I couldn't exactly mention the vampires and the Volturi.
"Uhm. Basically there were people trying to take me from my parents so my family had to send me away until the problem could be solved." That should be enough right? It wasn't a lie but it wasn't the whole truth.
"Why were they trying to take you?"
I shrugged my shoulders. Oh crap, now what do I tell him? How do I explain without giving anything away.
"I don't exactly know. I just know that when they came with their warning they told my parents that if they didn't give me up they would kill them and take me."
Tyler's eyes widened. "Were your family part of a mob?"
I shook my head. "Of course not. My parents are really good people. They would never do that."
He let out a breath of relief.
"I guess I was 'special' in their eyes."
"You are special Renesmee." Tyler said in a soft voice.
I turned my head to look at him. His hazel eyes caught mine and we stared. After a few seconds I saw the corner of his eyes lift. He was smiling.
"You are very pretty." He said to me before his face flushed red.
Before I could reply the waiter was back and setting two plates in front of us. My attention was immeadiately stolen as I was reminded of my hunger.
The two of us ate in silence.
When we were halfway into the harbor I realized I had forgotten my wallet so we had to turn around and go back. Just as we finally docked there wasn't much time for chattering as we were running late. We still had the morning traffic to get through and school was about to start in just fifteen minutes.
As we made our way through town I noticed Tyler looked nervous. I could hear his pulse quickening and could even make out a little bit of persperation on his forehead.
Reaching over I placed my hand on his forearm. He jumped slightly and I could've sworn his heart palpitated.
"What's going on?" I asked him.
He looked at me and then looked away.
I wish I knew what was wrong with him? Only if I could get into his mind.
I was standing in an empty classroom. Row after row of table was absent of the usual presence of students. Near the front on the white board was the date and beside it was a name written in an elegant cursive font.
Drew Hawthorne.
I was in that monsters classroom.
The angle shifted and I was looking at the back of the classroom. Tyler was standing before his father, his body was trembling.
"How many times have I told you not to be late for class?" His father growled.
"Dad. I'm sorry it wasn't my-"
Drew brought his hand across his sons face. Tyler quickly brought his hand up to his cheek as it began to welt red.
"Don't you dare talk back to me boy!" he snapped.
Tyler just stood there while his father went on and on. Yelling at him and cursing and hitting him.
I gasped as I looked at him. Tyler was being like this because he was scared of his father. He was afraid of being late because whenever he was late his father hit him.
"You shouldn't be afraid of him." I whispered as I took his hand into mine and squeezed it.
I heard his heart beat speed up as he looked at me.
"You saw what he did to me Renesmee. They get worse."
"But you are bigger then your father. You should stand up for yourself."
It was true. Tyler was as big as my uncle Emmett, except he wasn't as muscular he was more slender. His father was just taller then my mother in height by a few inches. If Tyler wanted to he could possbily overpower him.
"I can't stand up to him."
I grabbed his chin and made him look at me. His hazel eyes looked deeply into mine. I could hear his heart speeding.
"You have to. You need to."
We pulled up infront of the school. Shockingly we were on time as the grounds still had students walking to and fro.
"I can't." Tyler said before he pulled away from my grip and slid from the limo.
I stared after him as I got out and looked at him as he walked onto the campus with his shoulders slouched. I can't believe his father had made him this way.
Inhaling deeply I moved my back to my shoulder and headed to my first class. Orchestra.
The previous day during lunch I went to check the board outside the classroom and discovered that I had made it into the class. I was the pianist.
Playing the piano was one of the many things I love to do. I was taught by my father and learned quickly. I was happy to be playing the piano as a class.
During class I kept on getting distracted as I thought about Tyler. Right now he was in the class with his father who was probably making plans to get revenge after what had happened yesterday at the hospital.
I didn't want Tyler to get hurt and I knew I had to do something to protect him. Minutes before the bell rang I asked to be excused to go and use the restroom. I ran as quickly as I could -without drawing attention- to the photography class and made it just as the bell rang.
I stood off to the side of the door and watched as students began filing out one by one. Then the last student exited. Only it wasn't Tyler.
I opened the door quickly. Tyler was standing before his father near the front of the class. Drew's face was inches from his sons and was screwed up in anger.
"Tyler." I called out grabbing their attention.
Drew quickly stepped back and resumed a casual expression.
He looked up at me and then to his father.
"The principle wants to see you." I lied.
Tyler looked at his father who nodded his head. Very slowly he gathered his backpack and headed out the door.
"You have detention with me at lunch time. Don't be late." Drew snapped.
I stopped in my tracks and turned towards Drew. "Excuse me sir but you can't give me a detention."
Drew crossed the room and closed the door to block our exit. Very slowly he leaned in towards me until I could smell his breath. "The dentention wasn't for you. But I think I should give you one just to prove you wrong."
"Sir?"
"After school, my classroom." He turned towards his son. "No visitors."
I opened my mouth to say something but I knew I shouldn't. Very quietly we headed to our next class which we were now late for.
On the way there we walked in silence. How was I supposed to explain detention to my father. It's only my second day of school and I was already getting into trouble.
