Xavier stood by the window of the darkened room, staring out at the silver-lit forest that bordered their land. The moon hung heavily in the sky, silently witnessing his turmoil. In the silence, the weight of his decisions pressed down on him, squeezing the air from his lungs with the force of regret.
Behind him, Anna paced restlessly, her agitation a palpable entity in the confined space. "Xavier, why won't you understand? This is for us, for our future," she pleaded, her voice a mix of desperation and frustration.
He turned to face her, the moonlight casting shadows across his features, deepening the lines of conflict etched into his face. "Anna, being Luna isn't just a title; it's a responsibility—one that's earned by trust and respect from the pack, not by manipulation or deceit."
Her eyes flashed angrily, a spark that threatened to ignite into a raging inferno. "I've given you everything, Xavier. I'm carrying your child, our future alpha. Doesn't that deserve recognition? Don't I deserve to stand by your side as your Luna? You're old. Luna could not even give you a child, yet here I am doing just that for you. It's the least you can do for me, don't you think?” Anna spouted, glaring at Xavier.
Xavier felt the sting of her words, a reminder of the tangled web they had woven together. His Luna Della, once again, her beautiful face popped up into his head. Ever since she left, he hasn't felt the same. Rejecting him was her way of getting back at him for cheating and getting another pregnant. He knew deep down in his heart that he couldn't blame Della for her hurtful words. He had to face up to the fact he had gotten Anna pregnant. He needed an heir for the pack and had to stand by Anna now she was expecting his child, but he knew the pack wouldn't accept her as their faithful Luna.
"Anna, the pack will never accept you as their Luna, not like this," he said, his voice steady despite the chaos within him. "Respect can't be forced or fabricated.”
She stopped pacing, her posture rigid with defiance. "So, what? You're just going to reject me? Reject your child?" Her voice rose in pitch, a blend of fear and accusation that struck Xavier with the force of a physical blow.
"No," he said quickly, the word escaping him before he could clamp down on the emotion behind it. "I will always be there for our child, but as for us..." He trailed off, unable to finish the thought. The truth was a bitter pill laced with the poison of their shared mistakes.
Anna's face crumbled, the mask of anger giving way to vulnerability. "Xavier, please," she whispered, stepping towards him with outstretched hands. "I...I don't know how to fix this, but I want to try. For our child. Our baby deserves the world.”
Xavier watched her, the conflict raging within him. Part of him yearned to believe her, to think there might be a way to salvage something from the wreckage of their choices.
"Anna," he began, his voice heavy with regret. "I can't...we can't pretend everything will be alright. What's done is done. Our child will always bind us, but I can't do this." He gestured helplessly between them, the finality of his words hanging in the air like a shroud.
“You don't have much choice now, do you?” Anna clenched her jaw as she eyed Xavier angrily. She knew he worried what the pack would think about him binning off their precious Luna Della for an omega, but she was more than that. She remembered how Xavier had not been able to keep his hands off her, but now it was like he was disgusted to be breathing the same oxygen as her.
Xavier took a deep breath, steadying himself against the weight of Anna's anger and veiled threats. He knew this situation was spiralling out of control, fueled by mistrust and hurt.
"Anna, you're right - we're bound together now because of this child," he said evenly. "But continuing this path of manipulation and deceit will only breed more toxicity. For the sake of our baby, we need to find a way to break this cycle. You must accept that you're not strong enough to be Luna material. You knew this.”
He stepped towards her, his expression softening. "I don't want to reject you completely. Despite everything, you'll always be important to me. But we can't keep doing this - the pack and our child deserve better. Anna, I have to go and deal with some pack matters in my office. I will talk to you later.”
She nodded slowly. "Okay...okay, you're right. For our child, we have to try." But as Xavier moved away and left the room, she scowled and twiddled her thumbs thoughtfully. She knew that she couldn't just be his side thing any more. Luna was what she wanted, and she would not give up so easily. An idea sprouted in her mind, and a cunning smile formed on her tired face.
“You will be mine. You will agree to make me Luna,” she whispered as she pulled on a black jacket and quietly climbed out of the open balcony.
After a half-hour run, Anna stood at the cliff's edge, looking down at the waves crashing against the rocks below as seagulls called out overhead. She pulled her jacket tighter against the salty sea breeze, trying to sort through the tumult of emotions within her. Her old friend, Sage, lived a few feet from where she stood. Anna considered whether what she was about to do was the right thing to do.
Sage's cosy cottage was tucked away in a secluded glen, surrounded by flowering plants and trees offering protection. Anna forced herself to walk up the path and knock on the door. And it had been a long time since she had seen, let alone spoken to, her old friend. Sage was a witch, and nobody dared to have much dealings with her, but that was how Sage liked it.
“Hello, my old friend; I need your help.” Anna hurriedly said as the door was opened.
"Oh, Anna, I can see the turmoil weighing on your heart," Sage said as she ushered her inside. "Come, let's have some calming tea, and you can share your troubles."
As they sipped the soothing blend, Anna poured out the whole story - the lies, the schemes for power, and finally, her realisation that she had lost her way. Sage listened without judgment, nodding in understanding.
"The path to healing will not be easy," Sage said finally. "But I am willing to help an old friend.”
Sage moved to her herb racks and compounded a unique mixture into a sachet.
"This is filled with herbs. Sprinkle a little amount on his pillow," she explained. "When he wakes the next morning, he will show his love and dedication only for you. But be warned, it won't last forever."
Anna hesitated for a moment, contemplating the consequences of using such magic. After a deep breath, she took the sachet from Sage, feeling a mix of hope and uncertainty.
"Thank you, dear friend," she whispered, embracing Sage. "I know there is still so much work ahead, but you've given me strength for the journey."
As Anna left the cottage, she felt a calm she hadn't experienced in years. Finally, Xavier would have eyes only for her and not for Della.
“Anna, what are you doing out here? Aren't you supposed to be with Alpha Xavier?”
