CHAPTER SEVENThe Earl went to the tea table and poured out a cup of tea. He then took it to the grog tray and added a little brandy before he handed the cup over to Jaela. She felt almost too weak to take it from him. “Drink it,” he insisted quietly. She took a sip and, realising that there was brandy in it, made a little grimace. “All of it,” the Earl ordered her. Because it was easier to obey him than to argue, Jaela did as she was told. Then the Earl put the cup and saucer down on the table and said to Kathy, “Come here, Kathy, I want to talk to you.” “I have given Rufus a large piece of cake,” Kathy said, “but Bracken and Rover looked jealous, so I have given them some too.” “I want you to listen to me,” the Earl said. She rose from her chair obediently and went to his side.
